CONCEPTS The word media was derived from the Latin word medius which means “middle”. It is the
plural form of medium, which refers to the tool people used to mediate or facilitate the
transfer of communication between a sender a receiver.
A sender, in the communication process, is the source of the message who may use a
channel (medium) to send the message to a receiver or to an audience. These receivers
actively perform the role of interpreting messages they received.

What many people perceives as “media” (i.e television, radio,and newspaper) are actually
reffered to as “mass media”, a type of media used to reach a large audience.
Media have become a powerful source of information, being able to present all kinds of
messages on every topic. People tend to become attracted to whatever they read, watch or
hear from media sources that they keep wanting for more. Since you can’t avoid the flood of
information from mass media, processing thes information then boils down to two choices.
1. Passively accept all the information or
2. Actively accept these information and filter what is useful and disregard what are
not.

ACTIVITY 2
Class will be divided into 4 groups.
1st group will present the elements of communication and show how it is being develop.
2nd group will detect which element/s of communication is/are encoder and decoder; give an
explanation as well.
3rd group will be tasked to make a short skit of everyday exposure to media, how it
influenced an individual in many aspects.
4th group will present an explanation how we should manage and deal nowadays with a tons
of media and information.
ASSESSMENT/ With a pair of student, each of you will conduct an interview with your partner. Recall the
