INTRODUCTION

In this modern world, every graduate competes in a global scale. Hence, it is relevant to
equip learners with the proper skills to be competitive--one of which is the great
communication skills in English. To skillfully acquire such language, one must learn its grammar,
the skeleton of any language that enables one to convey meaning. Indeed, the study of English
offers great opportunities for communication and work which are highly relevant in one’s life.
With practice and unwavering effort, mastery is highly possible.

Contextualized Learning Material for English 7 is a learning resource designed to sculpt

one’s English grammar, focusing on Subject-Verb agreement. The material contains several
texts and activities that revolve around S-V agreement that further enhance one’s accuracy in
grammar specifically in oral and written communication.

The material is contextualized in a Cebu City area to make sense for the resident learners of
the place. History, transportation and other life experiences of the residents are blended in the
lesson to appeal to the learners of the area.

Learning Competencies : EN7G-Ia-11:Observe correct subject-verb agreement

EN7RC-Ic-7.1: Read intensively to find answers to specific
questions
EN7SS-Ia-1.5.2: Scan for specific information

I. Definition of Terms:

1. Subject
a. is the one being talked about in the sentence
b. usually starts the sentence
c. is often the doer of the action
2. Verb
from http://cliparts.co/clipart/3802167
a. is the one that talks about the subject
b. is often the action or condition of the subject

II. General Rules:

1. If the subject is singular(one), add the suffix -s to the verb.

Example: He(Subject-only one) loves(verb has the suffix -s) his mother.
2. If the subject is plural (more than one), don’t add the suffix -s to the verb.
Example: They(Subject-more than one) love (verb has no -s) their mothers.

Here is a table showing the concept of the two general rules.

Subject (singular)=no -s (most of the Verb (singular)= has -s

time)
Subject (plural)= has -s (most of the time) Verb (plural)= has no -s

It is noticed above that adding an -s to a single subject will make it plural, but
adding-s to a verb will make it singular. On the other hand, single subject with no -s is
singular in number, but if a verb has no -s, it is already plural in form.

Note: The adding of -S to the verb will ONLY HAPPEN if the verbs are in SIMPLE
PRESENT TENSE.
However, there are some verbs that to make them plural is to actually have another
word which is their plural equivalent. Example: She is(verb is singular) good. They
are(plural of is) good.

III. Other Rules:

1. Singular subjects connected by “and” which refer to different things take plural
verb(no -s).
Examples: Mario and Ana (singular subjects connected by and) go to Jansen.
The man and the guard talk near the school gate.

2. Intervening words that appear between the subject and the verb do NOT AFFECT
the agreement.
2

Examples: The children(Children is the subject and not the parent), together with
their parent, visit SM Seaside.
One (One is the subject and not the students)of BCNHS students wins
in Editorial writing contest.

3. If the subjects are connected by either…or, and neither… nor, the verb will follow the
number of the closest subject to it.
Examples: Either the people or that child (Child is the closest subject to the verb-
one only) knows the truth.
Neither the boy nor the girls (Girls are the closest subject to the
verb-many) know the truth.

4. Indefinite pronouns like everyone, everybody, someone, anyone, somebody, nobody,

no one, and anybody used as subjects will have a singular verb(has -s).
Examples: Someone likes to join the Ms. United Nations.
Everybody stands at the singing of the national anthem.

5. Indefinite pronouns like many, several, some, few, and all used solely as subjects will
have plural verbs(no -s).
Examples: Many wear their complete uniform.
Some come late in school due to bad weather.
