Professor Sanjeev Misra

MS, MCh (Surgical Oncology), FRCS (England), FRCS (Glasgow), FACS, FICS, FAMS, FNASc,
DSc (hc)
He is presently working as Vice Chancellor of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University, UP.
Prior to his current appointment he was the founder Director and CEO of All India Institute of
Medical Sciences, Jodhpur from 2012 to 2022. He has also been Director and CEO of AIIMS
Rishikesh (2016-2017), AIIMS, Gorakhpur (2018 – 2020) and AIIMS, Rajkot (2018 -2021) as
additional charge and was responsible for starting AIIMS, Gorakhpur and AIIMS, Rajkot.
Previously he was working as Professor & Head, Department of Surgical Oncology, King
George’s Medical University, Lucknow.
He has had a brilliant academic career. He passed his MBBS from King George’s Medical
College, Lucknow in 1987 obtaining first position in MBBS and was awarded the prestigious
Hewett Medal and 18 Gold and Silver medals.. He did his MS in General Surgery from the
Department of Surgery, KGMC and MCh in Surgical Oncology from Kidwai Memorial Institute
of Oncology, Bangalore.
Prof. Misra was the youngest Director of any AIIMS ever appointed. As founder Director &
CEO of AIIMS, Jodhpur he exhibited a visionary approach and exceptional skills in the growth
and development patterns of teaching, innovative research models and optimal patient care
programmes. Due to his efforts AIIMS, Jodhpur was the second AIIMS to become functional
in 2012 after AIIMS, New Delhi
He is Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences, India, Fellow of National Academy of
Science, India, Fellow of American College of Surgeons, USA & Fellow of International College
of Surgeons, USA. He has received several International & National Awards like -
Commonwealth Fellowship and International Guest Scholarship of American College of
Surgeons. He has been Visiting Professor to Kings College, London, UK, Aintree Hospital,
Liverpool, UK, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA, Johns Hopkins Medical Centre, USA & University
of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, USA. For his contributions to surgery he was awarded FRCS
England and FRCS Glasgow ad eundem. He was awarded DSc Honoris Causa by the Hemwati
Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical University in 2020. He was awarded Honorary
Fellowship of the British Association of Surgical Oncology.
He has been Sectional Editor of the Oncology section of Indian Journal of Surgery & Honorary
Secretary (2007-08), and President (2013) of the Indian Association of Surgical
Oncology, President, Association Surgeons of India, UP & UK Chapter 2013, Honorary
Secretary Indian Society of Oncology and President Indian Society of Oncology (2019- 2022).
He has been Executive Council member and has been President of Asian Clinical Oncology
Society Meeting, Member Executive Committee Asian Society of Head and Neck Oncology,
Taiwan, Member Scientific Committee International Conference of Anti Cancer Treatment,
Paris, France. He has also been Special Invitee of the British Association of Surgical Oncology,
London, England. He is Council Member of the prestigious National Academy of Medical
Sciences, India from 2017. He was awarded fellowships at the Memorial Sloan Kettering
Cancer Centre, New York, USA, MD Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, USA and Cancer
Institute Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.
Prof. Misra has been Editor in Chief of Annals of National Academy of Medical Sciences (2016-
2021) and also serves on the Editorial Board of several national and international journals. He
has been Joint Editor of Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology and his critical reviews is sought
by several journals like Lancet, Annals of Oncology, BMC Cancer, World Journal of Surgical
Oncology, Head and Neck, Surgical Oncology etc. for reviewing advance research manuscripts
submitted for publication. He has been Member of Regional Advisory Subcommittee on India
of American Association of Cancer Research. He is also member of Scientific Advisory Group
of Indian Council of Medical Research committee on Non-Communicable diseases. He is
Member, Governing Council of Indo-Swedish Health Care Innovation Center, Member of
Senate of IIT, Jodhpur. He is also Member Governing Council of ICMR 2023.
He has published extensively and has over 230 published papers and 30 chapters in several
international and national peer reviewed journals and books. He has delivered various guest
lectures and Orations in International and National conferences. He is a postgraduate teacher
recognized by the NMC and NBE, and examiner for MCh and DNB. He is also included in top
2% Researchers in the world by Stanford University.
He has been involved with medical education and is dedicated to the teaching, training and
practice of medicine and its growth for nearly three decades.
With his concern for the underserved, he has shown untiring devotion to patient care
especially those belonging to the deprived and marginalized sections of the society. His
exceptional qualities of the head and heart are appreciated by all sections of medical
professionals in India and serve as a role model for the students and faculty alike.
He is a doctor with a healing touch, professional excellence, with qualities of administrative
and academic leadership, widely respected and appreciated by his students, medical
fraternity, and a benefactor of underserved and deprived.
