Objectives
To create awareness and educate the general public, starting with UiTM

To develop a system that can be replicated by food operators

UiTM Kampus Dengkil: Observation &
Comments
1. Single-use plastic-themed campaign was being conducted at this campus.
2. Water dispensers were only placed in the hostels and the number was insufficient.
3. The stalls used paper containers and paper bags but there was no use of straws. However,
plastic water bottles were sold.
4. Students were strictly instructed to bring their own water bottles and food containers.
5. There was a committee monitoring the premise to ensure there was no use of single-use
plastics. Stall operators strictly prohibit students and staff to use single-use plastics for
takeaways.

Data obtained through face-to-face interviews and phone

Target Setting
Why reduce single-use plastics by 80% at
UiTM Shah Alam campus?

• Feasible target for an initial effort.

• There are affordable and readily
available alternatives for 80% of
single-use plastics.
• The alternative for plastic cup lid
is currently too expensive and
difficult to obtain.
• To disperse green awareness to the
wider community by educating UiTM
students.
• To support UiTM’s GREENATION.

Analysing Solution 1: Hold Awareness Campaigns
JUSTIFICATION FOR SUGGESTED
SOLUTION
• Campaigns are important to create
awareness among people. The public and
cafeteria operators must be made aware
of the dangers of single-use plastic and
the availability of eco-friendly alternatives.

• Campaign is usually the first step taken

before implementing changes that
involves a big group of people.

• Government bodies hold regular

campaigns to promote an ideology,
change of habit or attitude.
Analysing Solutions 2 & 3:
Providing Alternatives to Single-use Plastic & Dishwashing facilities
Single-use Plastics
JUSTIFICATION FOR SUGGESTED SOLUTION
• Eco-friendly alternatives serve the same functions as
single-use plastic food containers without polluting the
environment; and the prices are similar.

• Eco-friendly alternatives will become more and more

cost-friendly as they become more widely used.

• Malaysia aims to be single-use plastic free by 2030 (Malaysia’s

Roadmap Towards Zero Single-use Plastics 2018-2030).

JUSTIFICATION FOR SUGGESTED SOLUTION

• Provide convenience to students and staff who put effort in
Dishwashing
facilities
bringing their own containers.
• As a form of moral support from the café providers and the
university.
Analysing Solution 4: SOP Recommendation
JUSTIFICATION FOR SUGGESTED
SOLUTION The purpose of SOP is to ensure that
essential job tasks are performed
• SOP can be easily adopted by all faculties
correctly, consistently and in
and UiTM campuses to implement conformance with internally

2006).
• SOP ensures standardisation of experience.

of a given process, with other documents

independently.
Analysing Solution 5: Design a Lunch Box Set

JUSTIFICATION FOR SUGGESTED

SOLUTION
• A lunchbox is eco-friendly

• Could be designed to suit students' needs

e.g. compartmentalised & air tight lunch box
with a cutlery set, water tight tumbler and a
designer bag to fit them.

• Lunch box is easy to clean and maintain.

• Several compartments within enable storing

of different types of food/snacks.

• Saves the environment by reducing plastic

waste that goes into our landfills.
