Psychology.
• We have over 50 staff members, with a team of 40 psychology academic staff.
• We were the first private university to offer Psychology in Malaysia.
• We were the first non-Australian University to attain the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council
(APAC) accreditation.
• We have partnerships with over 50 top universities in the US, Australia, UK and New Zealand.
• We have 11 research centres and 1 research lab.

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY?
“Psychology is the science of behaviours, thoughts and feelings.”
In essence, psychology aims to understand how people behave, think and feel.
This definition is well captured in the HELP Faculty of Behavioural Sciences motto:

Dr Oliver Chan is currently an Assistant Professor of Criminology at
City University of Hong Kong. In 2014, Oliver was awarded the
honorary title "Early Career Award" by the Hong Kong Research
Grants Council (RGC) of University Grant Committee (UGC) for his

Chiao Thong is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Psychology in
Clinical Psychology at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She
graduated Summa cum Laude in BS Psychology from Bemidji
State University, US. She was a recipient of the Who’s Who among
College Students Award (USA) in 2009.

Medicine
Jun Min is pursuing a Doctorate of Psychology in Clinical
Psychology in Yeshiva University, Albert Einstein College of
Medicine, US with a merit based scholarship. After graduating
from HELP University, he was a lecturer teaching pre-university
psychology courses in Disted College (Penang) and a research
assistant at Penang Medical College (Psychiatry Department).

Dr Cameron Teoh
PhD, University of Otago
Cameron completed her PhD in Psychology and
Human-Computer Interaction at the University of
Otago, New Zealand. Her research was on
computer-mediated communication. She started
her undergraduate Psychology programme at
HELP University and completed it at Otago with a
BA First Class Honours. Her research interests
are in human factors and ergonomics, human-
computer interaction, and usability and user
experience issues.

In collaboration with UNICEF, the Department of Psychology is involved in a
research project that aims to promote positive discipline techniques in schools and

The Psychological Effects of the Tsunami on Children (UNICEF)


The HELP Department of Psychology, with funding from UNICEF, visited the tsunami
affected sites in Kedah, Malaysia, to perform a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD) psychological assessment on the children there. It made recommendations
to improve the psychological well-being of the affected community. The team
worked together with Dr Hj Ahmad Rashidi, Head of the Psychiatric Unit in Hospital
3 Alor Setar, to carry out the necessary interventions.
