Assignment 1 Part B 2

PART B: VERANDAH DESIGN

This document details the design of a verandah for a residential property, following the provided
parameters and adhering to AS 1684.2.

Design Parameters

• Roof: Gable roof with a 5° pitch

• Dimensions: 4700mm (W) x 2425mm (D)
• Beam & Rafter Spacing: 600mm
• Overhang: 600mm

Specification

• Timber: MGP10 Pinus

• Roof Cladding: Lysaght COLORBOND® Steel Trimdek 0.48 installed with a minimum 2° pitch.
• Timber Protection: All timber will be treated with a H2 level CCA or equivalent waterborne treatment
for durability and protection against fungal and insect attack, as per AS 1684.

Design Calculations

Beam Sizing:

• Referring to AS 1684.2 Supplement 1 - Design Tables for Verandahs, Beams & Floors - Table 1 for
simply supported beams, we can determine the appropriate beam size for the given span (2400mm),
pitch (5°), roof cladding (Trimdek 0.48 - 4.93kg/m2), and live load (residential verandah - 2.0kPa).
• Calculations:
o Dead load (roof cladding + self-weight of beam) = (4.93kg/m2 + MGP10 self-weight) * 1.2
(safety factor) = 10.14 kg/m2
o Total load per metre = dead load + live load = 10.14kg/m2 + 2.0kPa = 12.14kg/m2
o As per Table 1, a beam size of MGP10 2-290 x 35 F17 is sufficient for the given load and span
of 4.70m.

Rafter Sizing:

• Following the same process as above using Table 3 for Simply Supported Rafters, we can determine
the rafter size.
• Calculations:
o Considering a tributary width of 600mm (beam spacing)
o Dead load per rafter = (tributary width x dead load/m2) = 600mm * 10.14kg/m2 = 6084 N
o Total load per rafter = dead load + live load per rafter = 6084 N + (600mm * 2.0kPa) = 7284
N
o As per Table 3, a rafter size of MGP10 120 x 35 is sufficient for the given load and span.

Post Sizing:

• Referring to Table 52 - Verandah Posts (Lateral Support at Top Only), we can determine the post size.
• Calculations:
o Wind Region - To be determined based on site location (refer to AS 1170.2)
o Post length above ground = verandah height (2750mm) + beam depth (45mm) = 3050mm
o As per Table 52, a post size of 150x150 f17 Merbau is used due to exposed timer and for
aesthetic.

Connection Details:

• The beam will be fixed to the existing wall using dynabolts (for masonry wall) at 600mm centres along
the wall plate.

Additional Notes:

• Lateral bracing is not required as the verandah is attached to the existing house wall.
• Flashings for the roof connection to the wall will be installed to ensure weatherproofing (details not
shown on plans).
Assignment 1 Part B 6

• All construction will comply with relevant Australian Standards and Building Codes.
• All bracing shall be as per AS4440 : 2004

Conclusion:

This verandah design provides a functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor extension to the house.
The chosen materials and construction methods comply with AS 1684.2 and ensure a durable and
weatherproof structure.
