Tutorial Plan – Week 3

Time Activity
10 minutes Ice breaker activity - discuss the different types of Information Systems
and its functions
10 minutes Lecture recap – recap of the main concepts from the previous weeks’
lecture. Students are encouraged to interact and ask questions on
concepts that they have not fully grasped.

The key concepts covered in the week 2 lecture were:

2.1 What are business processes? How are they related to information
systems?

2.2 How do systems serve the different management groups in a


business, and how do systems that link the enterprise improve
organizational performance?

2.3 Why are systems for collaboration and social business so important,
and what technologies do they use?

2.4 What is the role of the information systems function in a business?

2.5 How will MIS help my career?


30 minutes Divide students into small groups (3 to 4 per group) Students to discuss
this week’s tutorial question. The week 2 tutorial questions are:

1. How can a transaction processing system help an organization’s


management information system and decision-support system?

2. Which of the four major types of information systems do you think is


the most valuable to an organization?

3. Discuss the benefits and challenges of enterprise systems and


explain why a firm would want to build one.

4. Discuss why a typical hierarchical management structure is not


conducive to a collaborative business culture.

5. Discuss the tools and technologies for collaboration and social


business that are available and how they provide value to an organization.
6. Watch these videos introducing video->Microsoft Sharepoint and
Play Video

. Share your thoughts on interesting features you notice from these two
products and how they contribute to boosting collaboration within
organisations.
30 minutes After the groups have been given 30 minutes for group discussions,
randomly select groups to present their answers to the class. The tutor will
lead discussions around the questions.
20 minutes The tutor will ask multiple choice questions 1-20 to the students and the
students will provide the right answers
15 minutes The tutor to give a sample Reflective Journal for students as a guide and
discuss its contents.

5 minutes The tutor will provide an outline of next weeks’ tutorial topic.

Students are encouraged to ask any questions that they may have in
relation to the course.
