ASSIGNMENT

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY RESOURCES IN THE PHILIPPINES

INSTRUCTION: Research and include the following details.

1. Give the differences of renewable and non-renewable energy resources (tabular form).

Renewable Energy Sources Non-renewable Energy Sources

> Derived through naturally replenishing > Derived from finite resources which
sources. formed over millions of years.
> The rate of renewal is greater than the rate > The rate of renewal is lesser than the rate of
of getting exhausted. getting exhausted.
> Abundant and can be continuously > Limited and exhaust as consumed (Not
replenished (Sustainable). Sustainable).
> Low environmental impact and minimal > One of the leading causes of pollution and
greenhouse gas emissions. responsible for high greenhouse emissions
> Sources can be used again and again. > Sources are one time usage.
> Examples: Solar, wind, hydro, geothermal > Examples: Fossil fuels (Coal, petroleum,
natural gas)

2. Name one type and a brief description of the alternative or renewable energy resource.

Hydropower
-Harnesses the energy of water moving from higher to lower elevations. It can be generated from
reservoirs and rivers. Reservoir hydropower plants rely on stored water in a reservoir and released
through turbines, converting the kinetic energy of the flowing water to mechanical energy, and then
later transformed into electricity through generators. While run-of-river hydropower plants harness
energy from the available flow of the river without significant water storage. Hydropower is
currently the largest source of renewable energy in the electricity sector.

3. Give the advantages and disadvantages of the chosen alternative or renewable energy
resource (tabular form).

Advantages Disadvantages
> It is renewable and sustainable. > It is susceptible to climate-induced factors
> Low greenhouse gas emission. such as droughts and reduces power
> Helps in water management. Like generation.
irrigations and flood control. >Not all regions or places have suitable
> Flexible power generation, since the release geography for hydropower plants.

meet changing electricity demand. habitat alteration for fresh water animals.
> Obstructs fish migration routes.
4. Include pictures of at least 3 locations in the Philippines with caption and brief description.

Ambuklao Hydroelectric Powerplant - was

originally constructed in the 1950s and underwent a
major rehabilitation in the early 2000s to enhance its
efficiency and capacity. Located in Ambuklao, Bokod,
Benguet. The power plant harnesses the energy from

The Magat Hydroelectric plant (Magat

HEPP) - is a 360MW power plant built at
the foot of the Magat dam in the north of
Luzon, the Philippines, which has been
operational since 1983.
