K TO 12 CURRICULUM

1. What is K to 12 curriculum in the Philippines?

-The k to-12 program in the Philippines refers to the implementation of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of
2013. The K-12 program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education: six years of primary education,
four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School (Official Gazette, 2012). The
curriculum allows the students to choose between three tracks which are the Academic, Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood, and the Sports and Arts strand. Additionally, it will also allow students to undergo immersion and
have exposure to relevant industries, especially in their chosen track.

2. When was the implementation of K to 12 curriculum in the Philippines?

- The current K to 12 program in the Philippines was implemented in the year 2012 (Doctolero, 2023).

3. Why K to 12 curriculum was implemented in the Philippines?

-The K to 12 program promotes global competency among Filipino graduates and professionals in other
countries, it bridges the gap between the local and international educational standards. The program aligns the
Philippine educational system with international standards, recognizing that a ten-year curriculum might be
insufficient to meet international demand (K to 12, n.d.). As mentioned in number one, the k to 12 program
provides students with a more relevant and enriched educational experience. Additionally, according to
Official Gazette (2012), a 13-year program is found to be the best period for learning under basic education.
Before the implementation of the said program in the country, The Philippines was the last country in Asia
and one of only three countries worldwide with a 10-year pre-university cycle (Angola and Djibouti are the
other two).
