Introduction

My name is Muhammad Usman Arshad born on 29 th April 2000 in Pakistan. Mentioning about my
family composition, my father Muhammad Arshad is government teacher. My mother Naseem Arshad
has been running the business of garments. My marital status is single. My brother Hanan Arshad is a
Firm Manager and my sister Arooj Fatima is a teacher. My other two sisters are studying in Pakistani
institute at different levels. None of my family member lives in Australia nor do I have any visa history.

Educational History

Explaining my educational background, I have done my matriculation from Pakistan Higher Secondary
school in July 2014 with A+. I completed my Higher Secondary School Education from Punjab College in
September 2016 with A grade. After that, I completed my Bachelor of Science in chemistry from
University of education Lahore in September 2020 with 3.41 CGPA.

Work History

After completing my bachelors I worked at Kips School as Science Teacher from September 2020 to till
30th June 2021. Then on 15th July 2021, I started working as a site coordinator with Venture Engineering
(PVT) LTD and still working there.

Why I Choose Master of Environment

During my job as a site supervisor, I efficiently led the team in order to achieve several targets from the
given site. I have shown commendable skills and commitment to achieve the goals.

Since I completed my chemistry in bachelor’s degree, I have been engaged in environmental research.
Since then, I have dedicated my life to the preservation of natural resources, the study of organic
substances, particularly microorganisms, and soil contaminants. I am particularly interested in more
sustainable kinds of bacteria and minimizing our dependence on fossil fuels and oil as an
organometallics major with a minor in bio nanotechnology studies. These resources are not only limited,
but their exploitation also increases global warming and geopolitical unrest. My undergraduate studies
were primarily concerned with pollution control and agro-based industries. But as it turns out,
sustainability also has a significant social component because it is really about changing people. Now I
want to extend my interest by getting enroll in Master of Environment.

I have keenly gone through the programme structure from the university’s website and the duration of
the programme is of 2 years. The course will start on February 2023. Since I want to contribute to
making society more sustainable, this degree is the perfect fit for me. Furthermore, it will give me
opportunity to advance into more senior management positions. I will get the skills necessary to operate
environmental management systems, participate in policy-making processes, and work in
multidisciplinary teams. I am aware that I have to complete 160 credit points to successfully accomplish
this course. I will be studying Leading Policy and Organisational Change, Sustainability and Systems
Thinking, Economics for a Sustainable Future and Leadership for Sustainable Business as core modules.
Throughout this course, I will discover how modern businesses are addressing environmental concerns
and what I can learn from their efforts to foresee, adapt to, and capitalize on change. With insights from
academic research and business, I will get both theoretical and practical knowledge. I will examine
change from an organizational standpoint and look for the solutions to a few issues that are crucial to
those of us who work in organizations every day. I will study about sustainability in this course, as well as
about the essential elements of a sustainability mentality, such systems thinking. I will discover the
paradigms that frame our worldviews and how language shapes our worldviews. I will be able to
recommend and defend some of the fundamental tools and approaches that can be used to support
organizational sustainability governance, creative thinking, adaptability, resilience, and ethics once I
have finished this course. I will be able to employ my problem-solving and critical thinking abilities to
discover fresh approaches to the sustainable use of natural resources. This course will change the way I
think about marketing and business, as well as how my company can prioritize sustainable business
practices, which is essential for the success of our planet in the future.

Why Not Study in Pakistan

For doing my Master’s, I couldn’t satisfy with any local institute. Although there are multiple universities
offering identical course like NUST offering Master of Environmental Engineering https://rb.gy/bo2hry ,
COMSATS offering MS in Environmental Sciences https://rb.gy/7w43ed and Preston University offering
Master of Science in Environment Management (MSc Environment) https://rb.gy/9gcrzt , Institute of
Space Technology https://www.ist.edu.pk/ss-graduate-ms-environment-and-climate-sciences , SMIU
offers Msc Environmental Science https://www.smiu.edu.pk/env/ms-environmental-sciences But the
courses of Master of Environment that is offered here are not up to the mark. I also looked for offered
programme’ course structures and I could not be satisfied. The same old curriculum is being offered in
the institutes for decades and I believe that the syllabus should be revised. The curriculum of the
courses must be designed by keeping the industry requirements in consideration.

The universities here have lack of facilities, resources, advanced software, research opportunities etc
due to which the quality of education remains low here. The classrooms are also not equipped with
modern technologies.

Although the offered program’s tuition fee is moderate in Pakistani universities but the most advanced
technology, skill set, and research opportunities for the students in this field are still not being provided.
The reviews I collected for this program from local university graduates were not up to my expectations.
To study such diverse and technical courses, universities must ensure to provide students with teachers
who are experts and have the most advance and recent knowledge in the field. But the teachers at these
institutions are teaching very basic knowledge using old tools, and technologies. The courses and
programs are theory based and do not equip students with the practical skills. There are no research
facilities available in local institutes. Skills I will acquire from these institutes would not fulfill the criteria
of market- demanded skills. Due to all these reasons, employers and especially the multinational
universities in Pakistan prefer to hire international degree holders as compared to local degree holder. I
am interested in research and it is not available in Pakistan. So, due to all these reasons, I have decided
not to study in Pakistan.

Why Study in Australia

My passion to learn the most advanced and technical skills in the Environment program, and my
financial capacity to afford studies at any foreign university helped me to choose to study abroad. My
decision to Australia concluded after considering different factors of studying in Australia and other
countries including the USA, UK, and Europe, Canada. Australia has a good number of international
students for the reason of its high-quality education system and prosperous outcomes. The universities
of the USA and UK are offering expensive Master courses. USA has higher crime rate as compared to
Australia. There is also a problem of racism and decimation in the USA. The UK and USA also have high
cost of living. There is also a currency difference like 1 USA= 225.56 PKR and 1 GBP= 272.81PKR whereas
1 AUD= 152.41PKR. So, Australia seems to be more economical option for me.

Weather conditions in Canada are not bearable for every international student. I cannot adjust in
Canada’s climate so I didn’t consider any university in Canada. I also didn’t consider any university in the
European countries because of the language issue. I only want to study in an English country. When I
compared these countries with Australia, I found Australia has most suitable option for me for pursuing
my higher studies.

Australia has become the number one preference of international students for pursuing their studies.
Australian universities are high rated and well recognized around the world. They provide students with
strong basics, technical courses, experienced teachers, the most recent knowledge, research facilities,
and industry-integrated programs. Also, the tuition fees and living expenses in Australia are affordable.
My tuition fee would be $......... and the annual cost of living in Australia is $ 21041.

Australian cities are safe, clean, and close to natural habitats. They offer the best living and quality of
life. The top cities of Australia include Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth etc. The weather
conditions in Australia are very moderate and bearable. Australia is a multicultural country as it has a
large number of immigrants and international students.

Australia degrees have worldwide recognition and accepted across the world. Good job opportunities
are given to those who have Australian degrees. Preference is given to Australian qualified students in
my country. So, when I will graduate from an Australian university, I will have more chances to be hired
by any of the top employers in my country.

Australia is the most reliable option for me as the government protects the rights of international
students. They are also allowed to work part time for 40 hours fortnightly. These working rights enable
students to gain international exposure, improve communication skills, and gain some work experience
too that will benefit them in their professional career in their home countries. If I will get a chance to
study in Australia, I would get the benefits that I cannot get if I will study in my home country.
These are some of the reasons I believe choosing Australia for my master’s studies is the best option for
me.

Reasons to Choose Griffith University

After carefully evaluating prestigious Australian universities of nearly ranking according to Times Higher
education https://rb.gy/0korvc like The university of Sydney offers Master of Environmental Science its
total estimated cost is $AU 81,999 https://www.sydney.edu.au/courses/courses/pc/master-of-
environmental-science.html . The University of Newcastle (UoN) offers Master of Environmental Law
https://www.newcastle.edu.au/degrees/master-environmental-law#:~:text=The%20Master%20of
%20Environmental%20Law,professionally%2Dfocused%20and%20interdisciplinary%20program but this
course does not appeal me because I am not interested in studying environmental law. The University of
Melbourne (UniMelb) offers Master of Environment and the fee is $AU 103,404
https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/graduate/master-of-environment/#:~:text=Course
%20overview,-2%20years%20full&text=The%20Master%20of%20Environment%20has,that%20you
%20can%20design%20yourself.

Macquarie University offering Master of Environment https://rb.gy/n1qiok and the fee is $AU 80,626 ,
University of South Australia offering Master of Environmental Science https://rb.gy/r9vzhr and the
fee is $AU 73,200, I decided on the Griffith University.

The offered programme by Macquarie University costs AUD $40,800 estimated annual fee while the
cost of University of South Australia’ available programme is AUD$ 36,600 per annum. While Griffith
University’ offered programme costs AUD $35,000.

I have also checked some universities in other countries too like the USA and UK

1. Portland State University in the USA offers 1 years program in Msc Environmental and Resource
Economics and Msc Environmental Science and Management. I don’t want 1 year masters
degree program. I want 2 year program.
2. Kent State University in the USA offers online Post Graduate Certificate in Environmental
Geographic Information Science and I don’t want any online program. I also do not want to
study post graduate certificate course.
3. Loughborough University in the UK offers Msc program in Environmental Monitoring, Research
and Management and I do not prefer 1 year master’s degree program.
4. University of Greenwich offers Msc Global Environmental Change and it is also a 1 year program.
I am interested in 2 year master’s degree program.
5. Thompson Rivers University in Canada offers Masters of Environmental Economics and
Management but I do not want to study in Canada because of its harsh climate.
These facts and figures led me to the conclusion that Griffith is more cost effective in contrast to the
other compared universities. Griffith University is more suitable to me. I like the course it is offering as I
have checked its curriculum. I covers all desired modules which I was looking for. The university is also
affordable as compared to the universities I have researched. Here students are challenged to consider
themselves in this context critically and creatively. Having a stellar reputation, and deserving praise for
its ground-breaking excellence-related accomplishments, it will be an honor for me to study Griffith
University’s internationally renowned curriculum. It has a reputation for producing high-caliber
graduates that are demanded all over the world. The staff at this institute is friendly and supportive, and
they want to make my time at Griffith as enjoyable as they can. The teachers are highly qualified and
they are linked with the industry too. Thus I will get a chance to study with industry experts and become
job ready. The cost of attending Griffith University is reasonably affordable.

The university is renowned for its highly influential research, exceptional student experience, dedication
to social justice, and a friendly atmosphere. By offering top-notch instruction, direction, and assistance,
this university pledges to assist overseas students in succeeding. With more than 200 degrees and a
track record of superior research and instruction, Griffith is still a top institution of choice.

World-class instruction and analysis on the environment, business sustainability, Asian studies, and the
burgeoning biosciences are conducted at Griffith University& Nathan Campus. More than 13,000
students are currently enrolled on the campus studying for business and environmental degrees. The Sir
Samuel Griffith Centre, Australia’s first teaching and research facility, is located here and has a six-star,
green rating. I will have the opportunity to tour the cutting-edge classrooms and research facilities that
make Griffith at Nathan one of its busiest campuses. Brisbane’s top- notch education, gorgeous weather,
and excellent lifestyle make it the perfect spot for me to study and further my educational experience.
The fact that Brisbane is one of Australia‘s most foot-friendly cities thanks to its solid network of
transportation alternatives, lovely bike lanes, and footpaths, is what I find most alluring.

I prefer Brisbane over other cities of Australia as it is suitable for me. Its weather is very nice and sunny
almost throughout the year. The city is also affordable and the cost of living from accommodation to
transport to food, everything is much in Brisbane. There are beaches and many place to see and enjoy. It
is a good tourist spot too. It is a safe city too and I will live peacefully there. Brisbane has 2,000 green
parks and over 2,500 species of plants, which makes it a biodiverse paradise. If you need to be in the city
but know you need your nature time just as much, then look no further. Brisbane is ranked on the
Sustainability Cities Mobility Index. An off campus may be between $720 and $2240 per month. So, I
prefer Brisbane over other cities.

Ties To Pakistan

I live in Pakistan and have a strong relationship with both this country and my family. My ties to my
community and friends have always inspired me to live here and do something for the betterment of
this nation. I always wanted to play my part be it big or small in making the sustainable business,
awareness and processes better in this country. The unavailability of standard business framework to
underprivileged communities and marginalized groups in Pakistan has always concerned me and I have
wanted to change this over. Besides that, my parents have invested me for all these years just to see me
give back to this community and be a source of pride for them. So, my sole purpose for going to
Australia is to study and return home to my family and community that await me.

Career Plans

World is rapidly looking for the options to switch from oil and coal based energy to green energy which
has opened the door for potential companies and projects to initiate their work in the relative sector.

Government of Pakistan has planned to use green energy for power supply to universities, office,
commercial and home industries, power plants and other work places. SkyElectric Limited, Pantera
Energy Limited and Pakistan Solar Services are few top rated companies working for the solar power
development in Pakistan. In wind energy sector the services of Metro Power Company Limited and
Artistic Energy (Pvt) Ltd are admirable. In these companies, I will be offered to work for the position of
Clean Energy Engineer, Climate Specialist, Renewable Energy Expert, etc.

Businesses and jobs in the green sector are becoming increasingly essential. Environmentally conscious
business practices are increasingly becoming a requirement for many businesses rather than just a
choice. I will have the abilities and knowledge necessary to support organizational change toward
sustainability goals with my specialization in sustainable business, making me in demand from a variety
of private and public organizations. After completing this course I will return to Pakistan. I desire to work
in some reputable environmental services organizations of Pakistan like Aabshar, Dewmak Energy Pvt.
Ltd., Environmental Services – Private Limited Company (Pvt. Ltd.) https://www.ecoservices.com.pk ,
Hazrin Pvt Ltd. http://hazrin.com/ etc. I can apply as environmental Consultant, environmental Scientist,
environmental Science Manager and Wildlife Filmmaker.

I have visited Glassdoor for job hunting and understand the salary package with local and international
degree. I came up with the findings that I can apply as Soil Scientist (Consultant) at CABI (Regional
Bioscience Centre Pakistan) https://rb.gy/zjpr5w , environmental specialist at PetroRisk
https://rb.gy/bmponi or Health, Safety, Social and Environmental (HSSE) Specialist (Sana, Yemen) at
UNOPS https://rb.gy/47gdpn. Employees those are skilled and qualified to carry out this task will be
compensated with expected salary ranging from PKR 80,000/- to PKR 100,000/- per month. With this
income, I will be glad since working in the relevant industry that will give me a lot more experience.
With time and a lot of effort, my wages will rise to between PKR 150,000/- and PKR 200,000/- each
month.
With 10,000 fatalities from climate-related disasters and financial losses of over $4 billion from 173
extreme weather events, Pakistan has regularly rated among the top 10 most susceptible nations over
the past 20 years. By 2030, Pakistan wants to use 60% renewable energy, 30% electric vehicles, limit
imports of coal, and increase the use of natural solutions. https://rb.gy/19epiw. Pakistan is carrying
multiple grand projects for environmental sustainability such as Capacity Building on Water Quality
Monitoring and SDG 6 (6.1), Ten Billion Trees Tsunami Programme - Phase-I Up-scaling of Green Pakistan
Programme (Revised) and Climate Resilient Urban Human Settlements Unit that is clear indication of
more competitive job openings for the international degree holders in the relevant field.

upcoming projects in Pakistan will produce lot of job opportunities. I can search for jobs through

With Australian qualification, I will have strong chances to get better employment opportunity than any
other local degree holder. Excellent career opportunities of professional grooming will also be available
due to the work of international NGOs in Pakistan. Considering this situation, I would like to return
because the abundance of professional career prospects for overseas graduates in Pakistan. Both local
and multinational employers in Pakistan appear to be interested in hiring graduates from foreign
universities because they have extensive knowledge, international perspectives on business, and know
how it is done far better than local graduates. I have very bright future and a great chance to pursue my
career by getting my desired jobs in public as well as private organizations of Pakistan. With the passage
of time I will get more professional skills which will bring more economic incentives for me.

Other than job, I also must look after the family assets and carry their progression, as they show my
family’s legacy. I have also a plan to start agricultural business after getting my legal share in my father’s
agriculture property. Right now there are bright prospects of sustainable farming in Pakistan as
government supporting such initiatives. Being an environmental scientist, I can focus on soil restoration,
water conservation and sustainability by applying techniques like Mulching which will multiply crops
production with less cost.

My primary goal is to study there and return to my home country as soon as possible after completing
my courses and earning my degree considering this positive and hopeful scenario of Pakistan’s business
sector, when can easily anticipate, I have strong and significant incentives to return homeland.
