PART – A

ALL QUESTIONS ARE COMPULSORY (30 MARKS EACH)

Q.1. a) At 2100 hrs, a vessel in DR position 51°20.0’N, 004°20.0’W observes the following:
 Star ‘A’ – Azimuth 221°(T) x 1.8’ Towards;
 Star ‘B’ – Azimuth 145°(T) x 1.3’ Towards.
Find the vessel’s position at 2100 hrs.
b) From 2100 hrs position, vessel intends to reach 4.5’ North of Hartland Point. Current was
setting South at 2.2 kts and Easterly wind was causing leeway of 4°. Find the compass course to
steer.

Q.2. At 1000 hrs, following compass bearings were taken by a vessel at anchor:

Foreland Pt. Lt. (51°14.5’N, 003°47.0’W) = 130°(C)

Highveer Pt. (51°14.0’N, 003°55.5’W) = 166°(C)
Ilfracombe Lt. (51°12.5’N, 004°06.5’W) = 225°(C)

Find deviation for the ship’s head and vessel’s position at 1000 hrs.

Q.3. At 1700 hrs, Nash Point Lt. (51°24.1’N, 003°33.0’W) was 6 miles off by radar. At 1745 hrs,
Scarweather light vessel (51°26.8’N, 003°56.0’W) bore 320°(T). During this period, the vessel
steered a course of 290°(C) and experienced a current setting 170°(T) at 4 knots and Northerly
wind caused leeway of 5°. Determine the vessel’s position at 1700 hrs and 1745 hrs.

Q.4. A vessel steering 025°(T) sighted Lundy Island South light (51°10.0’N, 004°39.0’W) for the first
time at 2230 hrs, when the meteorological visibility was 4 miles. The vessel continued on her
course and at 2310 hrs, the same light became obscured. If the current was estimated to set 245°(T)
at 3 knots, find the vessel’s position at 2230 hrs and 2310 hrs.
