LESSON: Factors Affecting the Rates of Chemical Reaction

 The reactants in a chemical reaction must collide to form

a new product.
 The speed in which particles form is called rate of
chemical reaction.
 Collision Theory states that atoms or molecules must
collide with enough energy in order to react.
 When molecules collide, a certain minimum energy called
activation energy is required for a reaction to occur.
This was suggested in 1888 by Svante Arrhenius
 Activation energy is needed to break the bonds of the
reactants to form new products or new substances.
 Reactants required an amount of energy in a period to
produce products. The activated complex is located at the peak of the energy
diagram for a reaction.

FACTORS AFFECTING RATE OF CHEMICAL REACTION

1. SURFACE AREA/PARTICLE SIZE

o The smaller pieces have a greater surface area, thus, providing much greater
contact among the reactants and effecting more collisions.
o Smaller particles size has bigger surface area.
o Bigger surface area means bigger exposed portions of a solid which are
available points of contact between reactants.

2. TEMPERATURE

o The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of reaction.

o As the temperature rises, the molecules move faster and therefore collide more
and have greater chances to react with each other.

3. CATALYST/INHIBITOR
o A catalyst is a substance that alter/speed up the rate of a chemical reaction
without being used up in the reaction. The catalyst may be recovered
unchanged at the end of the process.
o Catalyst provides an energy pathway needed to start a reaction.
o Examples are kalburo, yeast
o INHIBITORS ARE catalysts that slows down a reaction

4. Concentration is the measure of the number of particles of solute in a given volume

of solution. The greater the number of particles, the greater the collision.
