REVISION QUESTIONS

1. A ball is thrown vertically upwards from a point A with a speed of 40ms-1. At the same
instant a second ball is dropped from point B, which is 100m vertically above A. Find
the;
(i) time which elapses before the two balls meet
(ii) height above A at which the two balls meet
2. A stone is thrown vertically upwards with a velocity of 25ms-1, if another stone is
thrown vertically upwards 4 seconds later with the same speed from the same point of
projection. Determine when and where the two stones meet.

3. A stone is dropped from the top of the building and at the same instant another stone is
thrown vertically upwards from the bottom of the building with a speed of 20ms-1. They
pass each other three seconds later. Find the height of the building.

4. A particle is projected vertically upwards with a certain velocity and it is found that
when it is 400m from the ground it takes 8 seconds to return to the same point again.
Find the velocity of projection and the time of flight.

5. A body is projected vertically upwards with a velocity of 25ms-1. Find

(a) how high it will go.
(b) what time elapses before it is at a height of 20m
(c) the time to reach maximum height hence time of flight

6. A ball is thrown vertically upwards with a speed of 42ms-1. If it falls past the point of
projection into a sea of depth 80m, find when it strikes the bottom of the sea.

7. A stone is thrown vertically upward with a speed of u metres per second. A second stone
is thrown vertically upward from the same point with the same initial speed but T

seconds later than the first one. Prove that they will meet after elapse of (𝟐 + 𝒈)seconds

from the time the first particle was projected and hence show that the distance travelled is

metres above the point of projection.

8. The ball is thrown vertically down wards from the top of the tower and has an initial
speed of 4ms-1. If the ball hits the ground 2 seconds later. Find
a. the height of the tower
b. the speed at which the ball strikes the ground.
9. A stone is thrown vertically upwards from the ground level at a speed of 24.5ms-1. Find
how long the stone is at least 19.6m above the ground level

10.Two points R and S are y meters apart. A body starts from rest at R and moves directly
towards S with acceleration a ms−2 until it acquires a speed u ms−1. It maintains this speed
for t seconds and then brought to rest at S under a retardation of a ms−2.

Scores (%) 0–9 10 – 19 20 – 29 30 – 39 40 – 49 50 - 59
Candidates 10 x 25 30 y 10

(a) Given the median is 30.5, determine the values of x and y

(b) Hence calculate the average score and the mode
(c) Construct a cumulative frequency curve and use it to estimate the;
(i) inter-quartile range
(ii) 90th percentile
12. Use graph to show that the equation 𝒙𝟑 − 𝟑𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓 = 𝟎 has only one real root and that
root lies between -2 and -1.
