CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Distraction and Time Management, Students who spend too much time on Facebook may struggle with
time management and become less productive in the classroom. Students are easily distracted from their
studies by constant alerts, endless scrolling feeds, and the appeal of viral material.
Reduced Focus and Concentration, Students' ability to concentrate and retain attention on difficult
academic assignments may be hampered by the rapid pleasure afforded by Facebook platform. Students'
inability to focus and remember information is exacerbated when they often go back and forth between
Facebook use and schoolwork.
addiction is defined as an extreme craving for and commitment to something, either physically or
psychologically . In the current era, internet addiction is the main emerging technology addiction . Serving
as ways of connection among people, addiction to the internet and social media has become a pandemic
globally.
Among available social media, Facebook has become the chief means of interaction, especially among
university students. Despite its usage as the bridge of connection, it is considered an emerging challenge
in different aspects, especially among the young generation and university students, partly because of its
heavy and aimless usage. As its users are currently increasing, controlling the detrimental effects of
Facebook is becoming more challenging, specifically in developing countries with unconfirmed regulatory
policies.
As the studies revealed, extended use of Facebook has led to poor academic performance, bullying
activities, decreased face-to-face contact, sleep disruptions, and mental health disturbances. Log-in-
related distractions such as uploading, commenting, and chatting with friends are leading to
procrastination of learning activities and sinking academic success among university students currently

STATEMEN OF THE PROBLEM

Facebook addiction among students is a significant issue with negative impacts on academic performance
and personal control .

Studies have shown that Facebook addiction tends to be high among students, with high levels of
obsession and lack of personal control . The addiction is also associated with excessive use of social
media .
Factors such as daily time spent on Facebook sharing photos with filters/makeup, and specific social
media platforms used contribute to the addiction . Facebook addiction has been found to have negative
effects on students' productivity, mental and physical health, and interpersonal relationships.

It aims to answer the following questions:wv


1.How much time do you spend on Facebook each day?
2.What time do you typically go on Facebook?
3. How do student manage their time spending in Facebook and learning

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Facebook provides a platform for students and teachers to collaborate and work together on academic
projects. It allows students to connect with their classmates and teachers outside of the classroom,
creating a virtual classroom where they can share ideas and discuss assignments.
Students can also use Facebook for educational purposes, including collaboration, discussion and to
obtain extra help. Students can form groups on Facebook and post questions to obtain feedback from
peers. They can share links, such as videos on the wall of the group page and in personal messages.

Facebook as an academic platform. Another important finding from the study is that Facebook is not
only perceived as a social network by the students. They also considered it as a learning platform
where they can retrieve academic sources easily and share them with their classmates for intellectual
discussion.
Thanks to Facebook, as a student i can communicate in easy way to other people and collaborate
them for some activities regarding to our school matters.

Facebook is useful in this generation, However, it also affect the academic performance of grade 11
humss students. They may experience several factors, including distraction caused by social media,
and also the decrease in the amount of time spent in their studying. On the other hand, Facebook also
have a positive effects on academic performance.

Facebook can provide students with a platforms to collaborate and share information with their peers,
it also be used as a tool for researching and learning. The relationship between Facebook and
academic performance is complex.

It's important to understand the potential effects of Facebook on academic performance in order to
develop strategies to mitigate any negative impacts and leverage the positive ones.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The consequences to how Facebook platform impacts the academic and social lives of Grade 11
HUMSS students. this study will not move to the technical aspects of Facebook platforms but will
study on the subjective experiences and viewpoints of the students of their Facebook platform use.

the 11 humss students, an understanding of proper usage is important for planning usage time and for
evaluating how this would affect student study and benefits associated with Facebook platform, as
well as a variety of other social media platforms.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Social media makes students interact and receive feedback from one another motivating them

platforms run on them to boost easy communication. This it differs from traditional social
to learn from their peers online. With the proliferation of mobile devices, many social media

media as it incorporates new factors such as the current location of the user, time delay between
sending and receiving.

With the emergence of social media, teachers and adults are no longer the only sources of
knowledge. It makes students more networked than ever. It is easier for the youth today to make
friends with people all over the world, most of whom they don’t know in person.

Facebook as a means of communication, Grade 11 HUMSS students may perceive Facebook as a


convenient and efficient way to stay connected with their peers, friends, and family. Platforms like
TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat allow them to share updates, exchange messages, and engage in
conversations easily.
Influence on self-image, Social media can have a significant impact on how grade 11 HUMSS
students perceive themselves.
