I. Important Roles of Literature in My Life

1. Enhances Creative Thinking

Literature is a broad topic that sometimes requires a reader’s critical

thinking to understand different texts fully. Reading different perspectives,

scenarios, and authors' ideas helps me explore and think outside of the box.

2. Enhances my Writing Skills

Exposure to different literary works allows me to understand various

writing techniques and styles, which also help me form my own writing style,

such as essay writing and creating academic texts.

3. A Key to Self-Expression

Like a social media platform that allows individuals to express themselves

freely, I also see literature that can serve that same purpose to express myself

through creative writing and reading compelling stories. It also helps me to

communicate my own thoughts and ideas creatively.

4. A Source of Entertainment and Stress Relief

Reading engaging narratives and compelling stories allows me to relax

and provide entertainment, as it helps me to be distracted and away from the

daily stressors of real life.

5. Broadens one’s vocabulary and knowledge

I admit that my vocabulary could be better. However, reading different

texts and literary works from other authors helps me broaden my wording and

writing knowledge and communicate my thoughts.

6. An Escape from the Reality

This is one of the reasons why I love reading fiction. It allows readers a

temporary escape from reality as it helps us to be imaginative in reading stories

in fiction.

7. The Reflection of Real-Life World

Literature may be divided into fiction and nonfiction; however, there are

still particular perspectives where we can see the reflection of societal issues,

human behavior, and various cultures as we dive deeper into understanding a

literary text.

 8. Understanding one’s self

As I read different literary texts, it also helps me to understand different

insights into human conditions. It allows me to better understand myself in terms

of my emotions, motivations, and relationships I encounter in life.

9. A tool for reaching my Personal Goal

Literature is also a form guide, allowing readers to learn different moral

lessons, motivations, and inspirations. In academic settings, reading various

literary works and developing one’s critical thinking are some examples that are

inevitable in studying.

10. Personal Development

This sums up everything I wrote above about the roles of literature in my

life. Reading contributes to my personal growth by enhancing my knowledge,

understanding different perspectives, promoting critical thinking, and shaping

myself for betterment as a person.

III. Recent interesting literature that I read

The last time that I read something interesting was a BL

Manhwa Series. BL stands for “Boys’ Love” and is a genre

consisting of different narrative comic stories. This is one of

the examples of literary pieces on how I came up with the ten

roles of literature in my life. It allows me to enhance my

creative thinking, My source of entertainment, A form of self-expression, An escape

from reality, Understanding one’s self, etc. Some books may even contain a reflection of

real-life situations, such as a representation of LGBTQ+ individuals, social acceptance

and discrimination, an individual’s exploration of identity, and social taboos and stigma

that surround same-sex relationships.
