Aircraft Deicing Fluids & Anti-icing Fluids Sampling Checklist

Before You Sample

See separate Sampling Guidelines document prior to sampling.
Do you have clean, dry, sample bottles? (see Sampling Guidelines document for recommended bottle and label types).
Did you review the SDS?
Have you gathered the proper safety equipment?
Did you use the recommended bottle for your sample and properly label each bottle?
Use GHS compliant labels. Labels are provided for PG fluids and EG fluids.
Fill out sample identification sheet provided and return with samples.

While You Sample

Did you adequately flush the line? Flush 5 to 10 gallons before collecting samples.
Do not collect fluid from the very top layer in the tank. Use a zone sampler. (See Sampling Guidelines document for
recommended zone samplers).
When collecting from the storage tank outlet leg, did you collect the fluid at a slow rate to avoid damaging the sample?

Collecting Type IV Nozzle Samples

Excessive shear causes permanent loss of viscosity. Avoid over-shearing your Type IV fluid.
Fluid should be sprayed using close to the same settings and using similar techniques as when applying to an aircraft.
Do not spray fluid directly into a bottle. Nozzle should be at least 5 - 10 feet away from the sample collection pan.

After You Sample

Check the refractive index / Brix for all samples. If Type I samples are within the refractive index / Brix specifications,
samples do not need to be sent to Dow for complete testing.

If samples are outside of the acceptable range shown above, re-sample and re-check refractive index / Brix before
sending to Dow for complete analysis.
Is the sample bottle lid sealed with electrical tape to prevent leaks? 125 mL leakproof bottles do not require tape.
Verify you properly labeled the bottles. (Date, city, airline / company, truck / equipment number, and product name) or
use sample labels provided.
