Foundation Project Proposal Damien Fenwick
What materials, tools, techniques and processes have you used and how can you employ a broader
range of materials and techniques to explore your theme in Module 3?
I’d like to experiment with more digital techniques and work on different styles of
rendering and methods. I will also combine this with traditional pencil sketches to plan out
my work.
I am focusing on the Pre-colonial Philippines and it’s identity as its own group of cultures
outside of Spanish colonialism. The area I’m most interested in is the equality and support
of women within these societies and queer culture, as well as the different styles of
clothing they wore. By using a digital medium I can explore different versions of these
forms of dress. I’d also like to have some work printed out in the printing bureau.
Question 2
Reflect upon the audience and method of dissemination for your work.
What does it communicate and who is it communicating to? What does it offer to the
viewer/customer/client and their lifestyle? Where will the work be situated? How can you market
your work?
The status of women in pre-colonial Filipino society was a lot different to today, in that
they were equally respected amongst their male peers and were given fair opportunity to
approach any profession and task they wanted, as well as queer individuals. To be
transgender was openly accepted within this society and those who were, were revered as
they were believed to be more spiritually competent. Women were also thought to be better
connected to spirit, and a special social class emerged called the Babaylan (shamans) that
were exclusively women and queer individuals. I want to express these ideas through my
work and present them to the audience, to show that todays struggles with equality in
gender and sexuality aren’t right, as well as the fact that we as a community deserve
respect, and that the past is not as archaic as one might have thought.
I’d like to do an illustration of one of these babaylan in a position of power, and have it be
printed in a very large size (A3-A1) to emphasise this.
Question 3
We make, design, and produce work to be shared, and to elicit a reaction or provoke a response.
What response would you like to provoke in your Audience/Client/Viewer/User? Are you the kind of
designer/artist/producer who aims to disrupt - to entertain or to question? Is your work ironic,
playful, educational or political? Use this space to think about the response of your target audience
on viewing your work - how do you want them to react? What is an ideal response?
I’d like it to provoke feelings of awe and inspiration in the audience, as I’d like to have
quite a lot of detail in the drawing. I want them to question the state of our society today in
its treatment of women and queer individuals. An ideal response would be an appreciation
for the piece I have made, as well as having themselves reflect on these ideas and try to
make a better change towards their environment and the people they know. I’d want it to
be good enough where someone would take pictures of it
Task 1 – Part 1
I’d like to do a digital illustration (traditional sketches will be done at first) that will be
printed to a large size (A3-A1).
What skills will you need to develop in order to complete the work?
What will you need to learn? What existing strengths do you have that can help you to succeed?
I will need to ensure to manage my time well and do the first initial sketches not too
detailed to save time for detail on the final piece, as after the mid-module review we only
have 3 weeks to create the piece and get it printed. I will also have to use composition
skills, rendering and also use my drawing programme. A strength is that I have been using
it for a while, so I wont have to hassle with getting to learn a new programme when
creating a piece.
What will you do to sustain your practice and to develop your motivation,
understanding and confidence?
This focus of this question is your research practice - what has already inspired, informed and
influenced you? How can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone here?
A lot of what has inspired me is the articles written by Filipino authors who reminisce on
their own culture, and are discussing the same aims as I have with this project in them; a
reflection on their contemporary society. I’d like to take their sentiments along with me
and use it to push me further towards creating this project, as I know a lot of people hold
the same sentiment as me when thinking of their own cultures all over the world.
Task 1 – Part 2
This is a short module - and scheduling your activity and planning out your production arc will
help to ensure that you keep the project on track, with time to make a quality artefact for the
exhibition. The best project concept in the world will not lead to a successful outcome without
good, pragmatic planning. Remember, gathering or "procuring" materials will take time - and
supplier availability and high costs will slow you down and impact on your ability to make work.
You must factor this into your schedule. A prohibitively high cost on a particular material or item
may prompt you to investigate a more easily sourced and cheaper alternative, which can
improve your carbon footprint - and improve the "sustainability" of the project.
Resources, Services and Tools - What will I need and what steps
must be taken to ensure access and availability?
What do you think you will need to complete the project? How can you begin to negotiate access
and co-ordinate your making with availability?
Sustainability
Use this page to identify aspects of your project relating to sustainability, unnecessary waste,
and environmental concerns. What might you do to manage this and reduce your impact? If you
can’t manage it directly, could you take action to offset your carbon footprint? How will you plan
for the end of life of your object/s, how will you remove it from the studio at the end of the
exhibition and how will you recycle and dispose of it? What is the recycling / disposal protocol for
the materials you are using? How is this affected once you combine materials together?
For sustainability I’m well covered since this is a mainly digital project. For my traditional
sketches, I’ll draw them in my own personal sketchbook so that I’m not using extra paper I
don’t need. After the exhibition I can take my illustration down and put it up in my own
home, or if it needs to be recycled it can be easily for other projects (e.g. cutting out scraps)
or recycled in the paper bins.
Task 1 – Part 2
Project Budget
Please list below any cost or expenditure associated with your project. The aim here is to identify
the actual cost of the work you have made, rather than the projected cost of a proposed
outcome. You do not need to list those materials that are freely available in the studios
(paper/pencils/acrylic paint etc) but do include more specific materials such as fabric, wood,
superglue, neoprene etc. You can add to this list as you progress through the project.
