CPP-1: PROBABILITY

1. A coin is tossed twice if the second throw results in tail, a die is thrown. Describe the sample space.

2. A jar contains 24 marbles some are green are others are blue. If a marble is drawn at random from the jar, the
probability that it is green is 2/3. Find the number of blue marbles in the jar.

3. If odds in favour of an event be 2:3. Find the probability of non-occurrence of this event

4. If odds against an event be 3:4. Find the probability of occurrence of this event.

5. A number is selected at random from integers 1 to 100. Find the probability that it is a perfect cube.

6. Two disc are rolled. Find the probability that the total score is a prime number

7. The King, Queen and jack of clubs are removed from a deck of 52 playing cards and then well shuffled. One card
is selected from the remaining cards. Find the probability of getting a king

8. There are 25 tickets bearing numbers from 1 to 25. One ticket is drawn at random. Find the probability that the
number on it is a multiple of 5 or 6.

9. One ticket is selected at random from 100 tickets numbered 00, 01, 02, …..,99. Suppose x is sum of the digits
and y is product of the digits. Then find the probability of x  9 and y  0.

10. One card is drawn from a pack of 52 cards, each of the 52 cards being equally likely to be drawn. Find the
probability that the card drawn is
(i) 10 of a black suit (ii) a face card

11. Savita and Seema are friends. What is the probability that both will have
(i) the same birthday (ii) different birth days ( Ignoring a leap year)

12. A fair dice is rolled. Find the probability of getting a number x such that 1  x  6. x  N .

13. From 21 tickets numbered 1, 2, 3,….21. One ticket is drawn at random. Find the probability that the ticket drawn
has a number divisible by 3.

14. Two dice are thrown simultaneously. What is the probability of obtaining a total score of 7.

15. What are the odds in favour of throwing at least 8 in a single throw with two dice?

16. A bag contains four black and five red balls. It three balls from the bag are chosen at random, what is the chance
that they are all black?

17. If a number of two digits is formed with the digits 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 without repetition of digits, what is the probability that
the number formed is 35?

18. If from a pack of 52 cards, one card is drawn at random what is the probability that it is either a king of a queen.

19. Four coins are tossed together. What is the probability that head will appear on at least one of the four?

20. A bag contains 4 white and 3 red balls. Two draws of one ball each are made without replacement. What is the
probability that both the balls are red.

21. A, B and C can hit a target 3 times in 5 shots, 2 times in 5 shots and 3 time in 4 shots respectively. Find the
probability of the target being hit at all when all of them try.

22. There are envelopes corresponding to 4 letters. If the letters are placed in the envelopes at random. What is the
probability that all the letters are not placed in the right envelopes?

23. The probability that a contractor will get a plumbing contract in 2/3 and the probability that he will not get an
electric contract is 5/9. If the probability of getting at least one contract is 4/5, find the probability that he will get
both

24. A bag x contains 3 white and 2 black balls, another bag y contains 2 white and 4 black ball. A bag and a ball out
of it is picked at random. What is the probability that the ball is white?

25. 6 boys and 6 girls sit in a row randomly, find the probability that all the 6 girls sit together

26. A speaks the truth in 75 % cases and B in 80 % of the cases, in what percentage of cases are they likely to
contradict each other in stating the same fact?

27. Odds are 11:5 against a man, who is 38 years old, living till he is 73 and 5 : 3 against another man, who is now 43
years old, living till he is 78. What is the probability that
(i) both will be alive 35 years hence?
(ii) at least one of them will be alive 35 years hence?

29. Two dice are tossed once. Find the probability of getting an even number on first die or a total of 8

30. Four different objects 1, 2, 3, 4 are distributed at random in four places marked 1, 2, 3, 4. What is the probability
that none of the object occupy the place corresponding to its number?
