PERSONAL STATEMENT

GEORGINA YAWA AGBEMATSI

Over the years, I have developed strong interest and passion in microbial studies since it tackles the
crucial aspects of life including disease control and prevention, food production, biodegradation,
manufacturing of commercial goods and industrial products. Recognizing the need to develop my
career goal of becoming a renowned microbiologist, I have been looking forward for opportunity to
receive advanced training in a top-tier university that has the potential of enhancing my knowledge
and skills in microbiology. I was, therefore, very glad when I came across the MSc. In Molecular
Microbiology and Immunology at the John Hopkins University, United Kingdom.

I am very hard-working young lady with much zeal & passion for research, self-motivated, team
worker, highly innovative, results oriented, respectful, work with less supervision and above all, have
high sense of responsibility as well as possessing excellent leadership and communication skills. To
further enhance my knowledge in the field of microbiology, in August, 2016 I pursued a Higher
National Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology (microbiology major) at Accra Technical
University and completed in November, 2019. Currently, I am almost completing my bachelor degree
in Medical Laboratory Science (10th September, 2023) and have taken courses in immunology,
microbiology, histopathology and haematology among others, I conducted a research project on,
"Antimicrobial activity of pure coconut oil, aloe vera and their admixtures on different types of
Candida albicans" and wrote excellent dissertation on the project. These courses have significantly
increased my knowledge and further heightened my interest in microbiology.

Over the years, my research and professional focus have been on isolating, identifying, diagnosing
and utilizing biological systems to improve lives as well as the environment. During my National
Service, I worked at the Kombucha Research Laboratory where beneficial microbes such as acetic
acid bacteria, osmophilic yeast etc. were used for fermented beverages. In addition, I have gained
extensive experiences in the use of biotechnological tools and techniques in the study of food, plant,
soil and animal microbes.

My earnest dream is to become a world-renowned microbiologist and significantly contribute to

resolving the recent and emerging human and animal diseases in Ghana and the world at large. The
selected postgraduate programme would, therefore, help advance my knowledge and professional
skills in microbiology and presents me highly competitive for both academic and industrial positions.
Offering me the opportunity to pursue MSc by Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the John
Hopkins University, UK would, therefore, be my ultimate desire and career life goal.
