COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE FORMS


• COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES
We use comparative adjectives to compare two people, animals or things. We follow the
comparative adjective with t h a n .
Example à You are better than me.
We form the comparative of short adjectives and long adjectives in different ways:

COMPARATIVE
S h o r t a d j e c t i v e : CHEAP This car is c h e a p e r t h a n that one.
L o n g a d j e c t i v e : EXPENSIVE That car is m o r e e x p e n s i v e t h a n this one.

SPELLING RULES:

COMPARATIVE
One syllable adjectives + -er They are smalle r t h a n me.
Adjectives ending in -e + -r Snakes are larger t h a n ants.
Short adjectives ending
in vowel + consonant Double the consonant + -er You are bigg e r t h a n your sister
(except “-w”)
Adjectives ending in
Change “-y” to “-i” + -er You get up earli e r t h a n Susan.

• SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES
We use superlative adjectives to compare three or more people, animals or things. We use
the preposition i n .
Example à This is the most comfortable sofa in the world.
We form the superlatives of short adjectives and long adjectives in different ways:

We use ( n o t ) a s + a d j e c t i v e + a s to compare two people, things or places that have the
same qualities. We can use this expression in affirmative, negative sentences and questions.
