Service Migration and Traffic Shifting in AR(ATN) and IP-MW(RTN-310) 2

1. Background
As per the new network plan based on ATN/IP-RAN devices under WSD and BTD,
the ATN/IP-RAN will upgrade the Layer 2 Network to Layer 3 Network. In this model,
Gateways for all the services are created at each ATN/IP-RAN devices and the services
are integrated to the core via IP-MPLS network. VLAN Carries traffic from Access
Node (BTS, AG, etc.) to the ATN/ IP-RAN device. All the services including 2G, 3G,
4G, ADSL, IMS, SDCBS, Lease, WiMAX, IPCDMA etc. will be integrated to the
ATN/IP-RAN Nodes. IP/VLAN of all the aggregating services shall be changed and
implemented accordingly.

7. Verification

Service Migration and Traffic Shifting in AR(ATN) and IP-MW(RTN-310) 4

All services status verification was done by both NT (respective services) and
Huawei Team. Further the traffic was assessed at corresponding routers for
verification.

8. Conclusion
All identified IP based services were shifted to the corresponding ATNs. All the
services have been shifted to ATN using /30 ip plan. All services after shifting to
ATN are running smoothly. The details for services shifted are attached below.

NT 4G/LTE project is spanning at an alarming rate and reaching its milestone today. In
the same vein, new eNodeBs are being installed physically/logically all over the nation.
During the installation, the respective eNodeBs are being uplinked from Fiber and
Radio links from existing GSM sites of 10M (4.8M and 5.2M) project. In the same vein,
the NE devices (L2 Switches: OSN550, RTN905/910, ONU and L3 Switches/Router)
are essentially used to provide and uplink transmission for such eNodeBs. But, more
than 500 standalone (existing) sites still have no extra fiber/ethernet uplink to eNodeBs
all over Nepal. Meanwhile, the UL shortcomings in such eNodeBs are recorded and
reported for any other unavailability of services by OFC Maintenance Crew: WSD-

Service Migration and Traffic Shifting in AR(ATN) and IP-MW(RTN-310) 14

ONM for KTM and by respective IMU/Filed Maintenance Team at regional level as
requested by eNodeB integration plan.

Figure 1: Co-Transmission Feature Use

As a matter of solution, each site where 2G (GSM) and 3G (WCDMA/UMTS)
both exists (with own fiber/ethernet link), they have been up-linked via single
transmission link of 3G in cascade. This necessitate a special feature in transmission
through logical integration and hence is being done via Co-BTS Transmission Scheme.
During the process: 2G (GTMU Card) and 3G (WMPT/UMPT Card) is being
patched/short via fiber (FE1-FE1)/ethernet link (FE0-FE0) without hampering ongoing
3G services at all. After successful co-transmission the early released fiber/ethernet link
have been provided as an uplink for new 4G/LTE eNodeBs. This enthusiasm is being
carried out under the mutual workmanship of NT 4G/LTE Project team with BTD and
WSD-ONM: Transmission/RAN by the technical support from Huawei alongside and
field support from CCSI at the same time. This ongoing work has led to:
a) provide an uplink to new 4G/LTE eNodeB in scarce transmission network,
b) provide a robust transmission link to multiple services (2G and 3G).
c) reduce the number of UL fiber/ethernet and eSFPs requirement,
d) reduce the number of devices in L2 aggregation.
e) provide new P2P IP plan region wise, thereby assisting IP restructuring task
also.
2. Co-BTS Transmission Scope
Co-BTS Transmission plan was based on following requirements.

a) The sites where 4G/LTE integration is planned.

b) Sites with no extra OFC and/or with broken OFC.
c) Sites with fully occupied MW radio uplink.
d) Sites with OSN removal plan with ATN 910 B/C.

3. Co-BTS Transmission Process

The existing sites of 10M (4.8M + 5.2M) are being observed based on eNodeB
(4G/LTE) integration plan and confirmed for Co-BTS transmission if there exist no
availability of an uplink for new eNodeBs. The physical configuration is made promptly
on site while logical configuration has been done in respective BSC and RNC.
Apparatus required such as ETH cable and/or LC-LC Patch Chord with eSFPs pair are
being managed to CCSI filed team from NT-Project and WSD-ONM. WSD-
Transmission and BTD has provided additional support for transmission plan and route
addition accordingly wherein the testing and verification of each services is being
carried out by WSD-BSC. The list of Co-BTS sites along with all necessary details are
attached herewith for further analysis.

4. Summary of Co-BTS Transmission
The summary of Co-BTS transmission is presented in table below. All sites
were configured in respective BSCs/RNCs and included under the cluster named Co-
BTS Group. The existing IP of 2G BTSs has been changed to new IP plan (in .../30
subnet IP), making existing 3G as a next hop (2G-Gateway). During the process,
running 3G services were not even hampered at all level of execution, while in case of
Co-BTS failure, alternative plans were applied. The details of the Co-BTS transmission
have been attached in the annexes along with this report.

ANNEX - I: Region wise IP plan for Co-BTS transmission
Primarily, it was observed that more than 500 sites may require Co-BTS transmission.
To cater this demand ../24 network has been divided into ../30, creating an IP pool for
each region culminating 512 distinct IPs, wherein 2 host IPs were assigned for 2G and
3G respectively on existing sites. The region wise IP plan have been implemented in
following way.

Table 4: Co-BTS Transmission (Lot - II) Update

# Note:

1. While going through Co-BTS attempt, some of the sites failed in Co-BTS execution
sometimes due to the high pack loss in that transmission network or sometimes by
unidentified/mismatched transmission route. On those particular cases, extra OSN
or even an ATN along with supplementary fiber/ethernet uplinks were managed for
new eNodeBs.

2. The assigned IPs prior to Co-BTS for failed cases are retained in the pool and
reserved for further reuse.
