BODY
3.1 Design and Construction of the Steering System
The steering system of the Toyota Hybrid Prius consists of a rack and pinion mechanism that
converts rotational motion into linear motion. The EPS system uses an electric motor to provide
the necessary assistance to the steering system. The electric motor is controlled by an electronic
control unit (ECU) that receives inputs from various sensors, such as the steering angle sensor and
the vehicle speed sensor. The Toyota Hybrid Prius steering system is designed to provide precise
and responsive steering while improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. The system uses
an electric power steering (EPS) system instead of the traditional hydraulic power steering system.

Figure 2: Steering System with rack and pinion steering[8]

In fig-2 EPS system uses an electric motor to provide power assistance to the steering system,
which allows for more precise and responsive steering. The system also eliminates the need for a
hydraulic pump and power steering fluid, which reduces the overall weight of the vehicle and
improves fuel economy. The Toyota Hybrid Prius steering system also incorporates several safety
features, including the electronic stability control (ESC) system and the anti-lock braking system
(ABS). The ESC system helps to prevent the vehicle from skidding or sliding during turns by

3.2 Working Principles of the Hybrid Steering System
The EPS system used in the Toyota Hybrid Prius provides several benefits over traditional
hydraulic steering systems. One of the primary advantages is improved fuel efficiency. Because
the EPS system uses an electric motor to provide power assistance, it reduces the load on the
engine and improves fuel economy. Additionally, the EPS system provides more precise and
responsive steering compared to traditional systems.

Figure 3: Configuration of steering system[9]

In fig-3 EPS system of the Prius also reduces noise and vibration compared to traditional hydraulic
steering systems. The electric motor operates more quietly than a hydraulic pump, and there is no
need for a power steering fluid reservoir or hoses, which can also contribute to noise and vibration.

Figure 4: Hydraulic and Electric Power Steering[9]

10 | P a g e
[ME 4703] Introduction to Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
In fig-4 there are some disadvantages to the EPS system. The system requires more maintenance
than traditional steering systems, and repairs can be more expensive. Additionally, the EPS system
can be less reliable in extremely cold temperatures, as the electric motor may not operate as
efficiently in low temperatures.

3.2.1 Brief Overview of How the System Works

The Toyota Hybrid Electric Power Steering (EPS) system used in the Prius operates in a similar
way to conventional power steering systems, but with a few key differences.

 Electric motor: Instead of a hydraulic pump, the Toyota Hybrid EPS system uses an electric
motor to assist with steering. This motor is mounted on the steering rack or column and
receives input from a torque sensor.
 Torque sensor: The torque sensor measures the amount of force applied to the steering
wheel and sends this information to the EPS control module.

Figure 5:Torque Sensor[8]

 EPS control module: This module uses the torque sensor input to determine the amount of
assistance required from the electric motor. It then sends a signal to the motor to provide the
appropriate amount of assistance.

Figure 6: Electric Control Unit[8]

11 | P a g e
[ME 4703] Introduction to Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
In figure 6, the EPS control module, also known as the Electric Power Steering control module, is
a component of a vehicle's power steering system. It is responsible for controlling the electric
motor that provides power assistance to the steering system. The module receives input signals
from various sensors, such as the steering angle sensor, vehicle speed sensor, and torque sensor,
and uses this information to determine the appropriate level of assistance to provide to the driver.
The EPS control module is typically located near the power steering motor, which is usually
mounted on the steering column or the steering rack. If the EPS control module malfunctions, it
can cause problems with the power steering system, such as loss of power assist, stiff steering, or
even complete failure of the system.
 Battery: The electric motor is powered by a high-voltage battery that is charged by the car's
regenerative braking system.
 Steering feel: The Toyota Hybrid EPS system is designed to provide a natural and consistent
steering feel, regardless of the vehicle's speed. It also has a "road feel" feature that allows the
driver to feel the road surface through the steering wheel.
 EPS (Electric Power Steering) system by rack and pinion: The Prius EPS system uses an
electric motor to provide power assistance to the steering mechanism, which is based on a
rack and pinion assembly. The electric motor is controlled by a computer module that adjusts
the level of assistance provided based on various factors such as vehicle speed, steering
angle, and driver input.

Figure 7: ESP for Rack and pinion[10]

 Fuel efficiency: The Toyota Hybrid EPS system is more fuel-efficient than traditional
hydraulic power steering systems because it does not require a constant supply of power from
the engine. This means that the engine can run at a lower RPM, resulting in improved fuel
economy.

Overall, the Toyota Hybrid EPS system used in the Prius is a sophisticated and efficient technology
that helps to improve the car's handling, fuel efficiency, and overall driving experience.

[ME 4703] Introduction to Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
3.2.2 Components of EPS
The Toyota Prius Hybrid Electric Power Steering (EPS) system comprises several components
that work together to provide power assistance to the steering system. Some of the key components
of the EPS system used in the Toyota Prius include:

 Electric Power Steering Motor: This motor is mounted on the steering column or steering
rack and provides the power assistance needed to turn the wheels. It receives input from
the EPS control module to determine the amount of assistance needed.
 EPS Control Module: The EPS control module is the brain of the EPS system. It receives
input from various sensors, such as the torque sensor, steering angle sensor, and vehicle
speed sensor, and uses this data to determine the appropriate level of assistance needed
from the EPS motor.
 Torque Sensor: The torque sensor measures the amount of force being applied to the
steering wheel and sends this information to the EPS control module. This helps the system
determine how much assistance is needed from the EPS motor.
 Steering Angle Sensor: The steering angle sensor measures the angle of the steering wheel
and provides data to the EPS control module to help it determine the appropriate level of
assistance.
 Vehicle Speed Sensor: The vehicle speed sensor measures the speed of the vehicle and
provides data to the EPS control module to adjust the level of assistance based on the
driving conditions.
 Battery: The EPS system in the Toyota Prius is powered by a high-voltage battery, which
is charged by the car's regenerative braking system.
 Wiring Harness: The wiring harness connects all the EPS system components and allows
them to communicate with each other.[10]

Together, these components work to provide precise and efficient power assistance to the steering
system in the Toyota Prius, helping to improve handling and fuel efficiency.

3.2.3 Advantages and Disadvantages of the System

provides precise and responsive steering, which can help drivers avoid accidents. Additionally,
the Prius includes several safety features that work in conjunction with the steering system, such
as the electronic stability control system and the anti-lock braking system.

The electronic stability control system (ESC) uses sensors to detect when the vehicle is skidding
or sliding and adjusts the steering and braking systems to help prevent accidents. The anti-lock
braking system (ABS) helps prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking, which can
also help prevent accidents.

Figure 8: Safety Features of EPS[10]

IN fig-8 the Prius includes several safety features that work in conjunction with the steering
system, such as the electronic stability control system and the anti-lock braking system.

4.3 Environmental Impact of the Toyota Hybrid Prius Steering System

The steering system of the Toyota Hybrid Prius has a positive environmental impact, as it improves
fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. The EPS system provides power assistance to the steering
system without the need for a hydraulic pump or power steering fluid, which reduces the vehicle’s
overall weight and improves fuel economy.

Additionally, the Prius as a hybrid electric vehicle has a lower environmental impact than
traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, as it uses a combination of electric power and gasoline to
reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. [1]

16 | P a g e
[ME 4703] Introduction to Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
[1]

Additional explaination is in WTW analysis.

4.4 WELL-TO-WHEEL ANALYSIS

Well-to-wheel (WTW) analysis is a methodology used to evaluate the environmental impact of a
vehicle over its entire life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to the final use of the vehicle.
The Toyota EPS (Electric Power Steering) system is a component of a vehicle, so we can analyze
its WTW impact.

The Toyota EPS system is an electric power steering system that replaces the traditional hydraulic
power steering system in vehicles. The EPS system uses an electric motor to assist the driver in
steering the vehicle, which improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions.

When analyzing the WTW impact of the Toyota EPS system, we need to consider the energy
required to manufacture the system components, transport them to the assembly plant, assemble
them into the vehicle, and operate the vehicle.

Figure 9: Processes involved in WTW efficiency calculation[1]

In Figure 9, the production of the Toyota EPS system components requires energy and raw
materials. The production of the electric motor, for example, requires the mining and processing

17 | P a g e
[ME 4703] Introduction to Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
of rare earth metals, which can have environmental impacts. However, the use of an electric power
steering system reduces the overall weight of the vehicle and reduces the need for fluids, such as
hydraulic fluid, which reduces the environmental impact associated with the extraction and
transportation of these fluids.

In terms of operation, the Toyota EPS system reduces the fuel consumption of the vehicle because
it does not require a hydraulic pump to assist with steering. This reduces the amount of greenhouse
gas emissions associated with the use of the vehicle.

Overall, a WTW analysis of the Toyota EPS system shows that it has a lower environmental impact
than traditional hydraulic power steering systems. The use of an electric motor for power steering
reduces the amount of energy required and emissions generated during the operation of the vehicle

Conclusion
In conclusion, the steering system of the Toyota Hybrid Prius is a complex and innovative system
that provides several benefits over traditional steering systems. The EPS system used in the Prius
provides better fuel efficiency, precise and responsive steering, and reduced noise and vibration.
The system is also designed with safety in mind, with features such as the electronic stability
control system and the anti-lock braking system. However, the EPS system requires more
maintenance than traditional systems, and repairs can be more expensive. Overall, the Toyota
Hybrid Prius steering system is a key factor in the success of the Prius as a hybrid electric vehicle.

Recommendation
Based on the study of the Toyota Hybrid Prius steering system, it is recommended that further
research and development be conducted to improve the efficiency and durability of the EPS
system. Additionally, efforts should be made to reduce the maintenance and repair requirements
of the system. Finally, more research is needed to determine the long-term reliability and safety of
the system. While the Toyota Hybrid Prius steering system is an impressive system, there is always
room for improvement. One area where the system could be improved is its responsiveness at
higher speeds. The system could also benefit from additional sensors and data processing
capabilities to provide even more precise and responsive steering.
