General troubleshooting - CAN

Step-by-step troubleshooting

The ignition should always be in the OFF position when connecting

or disconnecting electrical components to reduce the likelihood of
damage to the components.

This troubleshooting procedure is based on the assumption that

supply power and ground to the PCI are functioning properly.
Disconnecting the PCI connectors during the troubleshooting process
will result in multiple errors.
Specific electrical component information and pin out locations are
provided in this procedure as a reference only. Always refer to the
technical data sections in RMI for the most up-to-date changes.
It is necessary to use DAVIE to clear all current DTCs from the PCI
and EAS-3 ECUs, and then run the quick check to identify a change
in fault status.
This DTC can be set as a result of multiple failure modes. For proper
fault isolation, complete all troubleshooting steps in the sequence
provided.

It is NOT recommended to troubleshoot INACTIVE CAN-related DTCs.

INACTIVE CAN-related DTCs are often the result of message
overload on the CAN network, or occasional voltage dips; for
example during engine start-up.
A single problem on the CAN network may generate multiple DTCs
for each CAN ECU device.

Step 1 - Investigate related DTCs

Before troubleshooting CAN-related DTCs (typically U-codes), take notice of any related ACTIVE P-code DTCs. One or multiple other P-code DTCs could have been the
cause for this DTC.
Step 1A - Investigate related DTCs

Action
1. Use DAVIE diagnostics to perform a quick check for current P-code DTCs.

If DAVIE does not communicate with the PCI and EAS-3 ECUs, go to step 2B.

Are any related P-code DTCs ACTIVE?

YES NO

Refer to the troubleshooting information for these DTCs before continuing with this
procedure.
Go to step 1B.

Step 1B - Visual inspection, installation of aftermarket communication or smart devices

Action
1. Check for installation of aftermarket communication or smart devices.
If no communication devices are found, ask the driver to be sure any installed aftermarket devices have been located and identified.

Is an aftermarket communication device installed?

YES NO

Check that the device is installed using an approved PACCAR harness or meets Check for reversed CAN High and CAN Low connections on the CAN component
J1939 CAN specifications. The use of wire splicing connectors, or tying into the 9-pin associated with the ACTIVE DTC. Correct any issues found.
diagnosis connector, does not meet J1939 standards. Refer to step 4A to clear the DTC.
Correct any issues found or contact your engine support representative for further
assistance in diagnosing this issue.
Refer to step 4A to clear the DTC.
If this DTC is still present, go to step 2A If this DTC is still present, go to step 2A

Step 2 - CAN-related component and power checks

Step 2A - Visual inspection, connections and wiring, CAN components and power

Action
1. Visually inspect the associated component connections and wiring for any of the following:
Damaged or loose connectors
Bent, broken, corroded or loose connector pins
Pushed back or expanded pins
Moisture or dirt in the connections
Damaged connector shell or seals
Damage to the wire harness or insulation
Correct parts not installed
ECU connections damaged or disconnected
CAN-related components damaged or not installed correctly
Reversed CAN High/CAN Low wiring connections
2. Inspect the battery clamp, fuse, relay connections and wiring for any of the following:
Blown engine-side or dash-side fuses
Damaged or missing relays
Damaged or loose connectors
Dirty or corroded connections
Batteries not fully charged or contacts not tight

Was there evidence of any of the above?

YES NO

Correct any issues found. Replace any related components found to be damaged or
broken.
Refer to step 4A to clear the DTC.
If this DTC is still present, go to step 2B Go to step 2B

Step 2B - Electrical checks, power supply voltage, CAN components

Refer to the corresponding checking data for associated supply and signal voltages, resistance values, and related connector pin test points.

Refer to the OEM service manual for more information regarding pin locations and designations specific to the vehicle.

Action
1. Measure the truck battery voltage level.

NOTE: Voltages below 11.8 V will cause ‘Rate too low’ CAN error messages.

2. Key off the ignition and wait at least 1 minute.

3. Confirm the power supply voltage level of each unresponsive CAN component as outlined in the corresponding component checking data.

Are measured values within the expected range?

YES NO

Troubleshoot batteries, fuses, relays and wiring in the circuit path. Check for reversed
CAN High and CAN Low wiring to the unresponsive CAN component. Correct any issues
found or contact your engine support representative for further assistance in diagnosing
this issue.
Refer to step 4A to clear the DTC.
Go to step 3A. If this DTC is still present, go to step 3A

Step 3 - Isolate faulty CAN network or component

Step 3A - Electrical checks, resistance, V-CAN network

V-CAN test points:

60 Ω at 9-pin diagnosis connector
120 Ω termination resistors in CECU and PCI ECU (D420)
Refer to the corresponding checking data for associated supply and signal voltages, resistance values, and related connector pin test points.

Action
1. Key off the ignition and wait at least 1 min.
2. Locate the 9-pin diagnosis connector and measure resistance of the V-CAN network between terminal ‘C’ and terminal ‘D’.
The expected value is 60 Ω.

Is the measured value within the expected range?

YES NO

Check E-CAN termination resistance on PCI ECU (D420).

Go to step 3B Go to step 3C

Step 3B - Electrical checks, resistance, V-CAN termination resistors

Refer to the OEM service manual for more information regarding pin locations and designations specific to the vehicle.

Action
1. Key off the ignition and wait at least 1 min.
2. Disconnect the engine harness connector from the instrument panel harness connector at the truck bulkhead.
