Experiment 12: Synthesis of Nylon-6,6

Purpose:
This experiment aims to synthesize a polyamide polymer by combining acid chloride and
diamine monomers to produce Nylon-6,6.

Procedure:
1. Add 8 mL of the hexane-1-6-diamine solution to a 50 mL beaker.
2. Add 8 drops of 25% sodium hydroxide solution to the 50 mL beaker.
3. Add 8 mL of the solution of adipopyl chloride dissolved in cyclohexane to the beaker
via pipet. To ensure the best results of making two layers with minimum mixing, hold
the tip of the pipet against the side of the beaker.
4. Use a bent paper clip with a hook on the end to carefully pull the film formed between
the layers.
5. Continue to pull the film while more nylon forms. To ensure the best results, avoid
letting the film drag against the sides of the beaker.
6. Continue to pull until no more nylon forms and observe for the possible decrease of
the organic layer.
7. To keep the nylon produced in the reaction, thoroughly wash it in a beaker of water
before handling it and allow it to dry in the hood. Otherwise, there will be a beaker to
put the nylon in.
