Question 1
Reflect on your work you've created so far and consider on how your use of materials,
tools, techniques and processes reflect the broader ideas and message that you are interested to
convey.
What materials, tools, techniques and processes have you used and how can you employ a broader
range of materials and techniques to explore your theme in Module 3?
Throughout the modules thus far, I have used variety of materials, tools and techniques,
having explored the potential of: book making (my previous self-initiated project),
sculpture/model making (my box project) and instances of using paint and ink throughout
all projects completed. I feel that, through each of these uses, I subsequently chose the
material that was best fit for the outcome that I had planned. For example, when I had used
the mod roc while constructing my box ( a cave), I allowed texture and form to be
accurately and effectively produced through its application. While exploring my theme in
module 3, I plan on honing in on the use of paint; as this is my usual practice, and I have
yet to explore it to its fullest potential in this project, I feel that it would be good to use
paint in my last project in order to show the progress I have made throughout each module
with a style and material that I most enjoy using, in my own creative practice. However,
there are also other techniques and processes in which I would like to explore throughout
this project: while creating a book in module 2, I had begun to expand my skills in the
process of crochet and embroidery, a material I would feel inclined to work with again,
perhaps combining this with painting itself? I feel that, by also making a book in my last
project, I can show what I have learnt and the skills I have gained through a more
sophisticated outcome. I may also like to explore the potential of printmaking as I have yet
to explore this in pieces after its introduction in the first module.
Question 2
Reflect upon the audience and method of dissemination for your work.
What does it communicate and who is it communicating to? What does it offer to the
viewer/customer/client and their lifestyle? Where will the work be situated? How can you market
your work?
The work in which I intend to create throughout this project is held with the aims of
communicating the difference between toys which are popular due to their appealing visual
potential as opposed to toys which have become popular through their marketing- often
toys branded as ‘ugly-but-cute’. I intend to explore how toys, and the act of buying/having
them shows a sense or need (of children in particular) to fit in with others, having a sense
of belonging. This holds the potential to communicate its message to a wide span of
people- those who would be able to identify the toys used in the imagery throughout each
piece, which would span over several decades. Although not the main message behind my
ideas, it offers the viewer to feel a sense of nostalgia as they would most likely be familiar
with the product and could be inclined to make judgement on it depending on their
respective experiences with each toy. At this stage, I feel like I would want my work to be
situated on a wall as a reflection of how the products themselves may be advertised and
marketed- for example a poster in the window of a toy shop.
Question 3
We make, design, and produce work to be shared, and to elicit a reaction or provoke a response.
What response would you like to provoke in your Audience/Client/Viewer/User? Are you the kind of
designer/artist/producer who aims to disrupt - to entertain or to question? Is your work ironic,
playful, educational or political? Use this space to think about the response of your target audience
on viewing your work - how do you want them to react? What is an ideal response?
Task 1 – Part 1
What is your Project Concept?
The themes of my project are: toys (objects associated with one’s childhood),
aesthetics/beauty, the feeling or want to fit into a group of people (to belong) and
marketing/advertising. I wish to explore in this project, the difference in how these
products have become popular and a safe place for people who can make connections to
the ‘unconventional visuals’ of the products- ‘belonging’. For example, how can the way
toys which are considered visually undesirable, be advertised in a way to become attractive
for children- they become popular.
The main body of my work will be a painting- this will be approx. 1m x 1m and will centre
a Cabbage Patch Kid doll. At this stage it is still undecided what the background will look
like, however, I have been experimenting with the use of printmaking, in this case lino
printing, which can give off the effect of signage and promotional posters used in the
marketing of toys commonly. I intent to create small signs, most likely painted cardboard,
to attach to the canvas, with small slogans making it seem like a promotional poster
attracting a viewer to buy it. For example- ‘adopt yours now!’ ‘cute but ugly’ ‘you belong’
I also intend to create a book/catalogue to be placed in front of my painting, preferably on a
plinth type piece of equipment. The contents of this book will be similar to a catalogue of
toys-like the ones typically used to be found in shops like argos, and will contain more
toys/dolls which have this similar message as the cabbage patch kid doll eg. Troll doll.
Therefore, I will be making use of acrylic paints, canvas, equipment to make books,
canvas hanging equipment and a plinth of some kind (also potentially lino printing).
What skills will you need to develop in order to complete the work?
What will you need to learn? What existing strengths do you have that can help you to succeed?
In order to complete this work, I will need to develop my skills in bookmaking- in previous
projects where I have created a book, I feel that, although my outcomes have been
successful, the books haven’t always been cleanly finished and I therefore want to hone in
on these skills as the work will be exhibited and I would prefer a more professional finish. I
will also need to develop my painting technique if I want to achieve the most realistic
version of the Cabbage Patch Doll possible. I want to achieve this effect as I intend for my
painting to resemble a poster. I tend to use gouache when painting and will therefore have
to develop my potential with acrylic- this is what I can use to best achieve a bright, poster-
like result.
What will you do to sustain your practice and to develop your motivation,
understanding and confidence?
This focus of this question is your research practice - what has already inspired, informed and
influenced you? How can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone here?
Task 1 – Part 2
This is a short module - and scheduling your activity and planning out your production arc will
help to ensure that you keep the project on track, with time to make a quality artefact for the
exhibition. The best project concept in the world will not lead to a successful outcome without
good, pragmatic planning. Remember, gathering or "procuring" materials will take time - and
supplier availability and high costs will slow you down and impact on your ability to make work.
You must factor this into your schedule. A prohibitively high cost on a particular material or item
may prompt you to investigate a more easily sourced and cheaper alternative, which can
improve your carbon footprint - and improve the "sustainability" of the project.
Resources, Services and Tools - What will I need and what steps
must be taken to ensure access and availability?
What do you think you will need to complete the project? How can you begin to negotiate access
and co-ordinate your making with availability?
Sustainability
Use this page to identify aspects of your project relating to sustainability, unnecessary waste,
and environmental concerns. What might you do to manage this and reduce your impact? If you
can’t manage it directly, could you take action to offset your carbon footprint? How will you plan
for the end of life of your object/s, how will you remove it from the studio at the end of the
exhibition and how will you recycle and dispose of it? What is the recycling / disposal protocol for
the materials you are using? How is this affected once you combine materials together?
As the main body of my work is a painting, on canvas, I will most likely keep this at home
and therefore would not have to dispose of it. The cardboard signs can be recycled after the
exhibition. When painting, I will take measures to make sure I am not wasting paint,
perhaps using left overs for later work, so storing it in a container to use again. If I decide
to lino print, I will make sure to use the least amount of material possible as to not produce
waste product, for example using one sheet of lino to create multiple prints.
Task 1 – Part 2
Project Budget
Please list below any cost or expenditure associated with your project. The aim here is to identify
the actual cost of the work you have made, rather than the projected cost of a proposed
outcome. You do not need to list those materials that are freely available in the studios
(paper/pencils/acrylic paint etc) but do include more specific materials such as fabric, wood,
superglue, neoprene etc. You can add to this list as you progress through the project.
Canvas £15-20?
Lino Sheets x5 £6
The Exhibition and planning for it is a key part of this module and must be considered alongside your
own emerging project. What are you going to exhibit? How should it be presented? How have other
creatives presented similar work? Research is key to help you to identify formats, conventions, and
approaches to sharing your outcome.
What will need to be in place in order for you to complete your final
piece and to achieve your ambition and aims?
