Art Teaching Philosophy

I believe that art education has multiple purposes. Art helps develop a student’s fine

motor skills and their problem solving skills. Students will experience problems in art that they

have to figure out how to solve in a much different way than they would in a standard classroom.

When they learn how to tackle these problems creatively, they can apply this knowledge to real

world situations. Students also learn how to express their emotions in their art. Students can

express their opinions and emotions through what they create, and then this skill can be used in

the future as a healthy outlet.

Having an inclusive and accessible classroom is important to me. I believe that all

students have a right to an accessible and equitable learning environment and education. Ways

that I can make education more accessible are offering multiple ways to present and participate,

being consistent, making sure all facilities are physically accessible, and providing support to all

my students so that their needs are met. Another way I can make my classroom inclusive is by

including artists of different backgrounds when I teach. Renaissance artists don’t represent

everyone. Including artists who are women, people of color, disabled, and so on makes it so that

all my students are seen.
