SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION (10 MARKS)

Read the text carefully and answer the questions that follow

In 1968, nineteen years after he was born, this young man left his village on the banks of
the River Niger, for the capital Bamako. He wanted to try his luck in the capital city. He had
had an unpleasant childhood and adolescence in his village. He has been neglected as a baby,
hidden from others, disowned and isolated. His life was anything but happy. Even his own
father has not spoken to him for many years. The young child spent his time learning the
songs of the griots, who came around to the village singing and playing music : but Salif’s
family did not want him to sing because he was from a noble family. In their tradition, noble
people did not become musicians.

By the end of the sixties, Keita was popular among the musicians of the capital. The first to
hire him was the saxophonist Tidiane Koné. Salif played well for the evening audiences at the
hotel de La “Gare”. In 1973 he joined “les Ambassadeurs” and toured throughout West
Africa. Salif then emigrated to Abidjan where in 1978 he recorded Mandjou. It was his first
commercial success.

Two years after the recording of Mandjou, this determined young man crossed the Atlantic
and spent three months in New York. There, he recorded the Primpin and Toukan albums.
They were also a success.

In 1984, he emigrated to France. He lived in Montreuil, a suburb of Paris. A year later, he

took part in the recording of the title, “Tam Tam for Africa”. All the royalties from the
recording of this song were donated to famine victims in Ethiopia. In 1987, Salif released
“Soro”. It was an enormous hit. In October of the same year, he was invited to England for a
concert to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday.

Since then, Salif has recorded many albums. He also founded a society called SOS
Albinos in 1990 to help and advise albino people. Since 1997 he has returned more and more
