INTRODUCTION

“MY SON, ATTEND TO MY WORDS; INCLINE THINE EAR UNTO MY SAYINGS.

LET THEM NOT DEPART FROM THINE EYES; KEEP THEM IN THE MIDST OF
THINE HEART. FOR THEY ARE LIFE UNTO THOSE THAT FIND THEM, AND
HEALTH TO ALL THEIR FLESH.” PROVERBS 4:20-22

Welcome to How to Memorize Scripture Quickly and Easily. I

hope that you thoroughly enjoy reading this book, but most
of all I hope that you will find it truly useful as you begin the
exciting and rewarding journey of committing the Scriptures
to memory. This book has been written to equip you, dear
reader, with the techniques and skills necessary for
memorizing the Bible. I sincerely hope that you will
accompany me on this journey which will only help in
deepening your understanding, wisdom, and connection
with the perfect and everlasting Word of our Creator.

Who is this Book for?

This book was written for you! Whether you are an individual
seeking to deepen your understanding of the Word, a Bible
study group searching for new ways to pray and reflect
together, or a young person just starting out on their journey
as a believer – I hope that what you are about to learn has a
positive and lasting impact on your life.

How Can You Use this Book?

This book is intended to be a guide for the study and

memorization of the Bible. You will be presented with
various proven techniques as well as guidance on how to
better understand your own personal learning style. I highly
recommend that you read the entire book at least once, and
then begin to use specific chapters for your focused studies.
As you progress, you will be able to identify specific
resources that will be especially useful for you, as well as for
others you may know who are embarking on this journey as
well.

What the Word Says About Scripture Memorization?

Memorizing the Bible is one way to deepen your

understanding of the Word, to know Him better, and to
continue on the journey of faith throughout your life. As we
are told in the Book of Joshua:

“THIS BOOK OF THE LAW SHALL NOT DEPART OUT OF THY MOUTH;
BUT THOU SHALT MEDITATE THEREIN DAY AND NIGHT, THAT THOU
MAYEST OBSERVE TO DO ACCORDING TO ALL THAT IS WRITTEN
THEREIN: FOR THEN THOU SHALT MAKE THY WAY PROSPEROUS, AND
THEN THOU SHALT HAVE GOOD SUCCESS.” JOSHUA 1:8

By memorizing and reflecting on Scripture, one can gain

further insight into our Father’s call to humanity to love one
another and to live a life devoted entirely to Him. We see
throughout the Scriptures the call to deepen our
understanding of His commandments.
Here are just three examples of this instruction to engage
deeply with His Word:

“THEREFORE SHALL YE LAY UP THESE MY WORDS IN YOUR HEART AND

IN YOUR SOUL, AND BIND THEM FOR A SIGN UPON YOUR HAND, THAT
THEY MAY BE AS FRONTLETS BETWEEN YOUR EYES.” DEUTERONOMY
11:18

“MY SON, GIVE ATTENTION TO MY WORDS; INCLINE YOUR EARS TO

MY SAYINGS. DO NOT LET THEM DEPART FROM YOUR EYES; KEEP THEM
IN THE MIDST OF YOUR HEART!” PROVERBS 4:20-21

“IF YOU ABIDE IN ME, AND MY WORDS ABIDE IN YOU, YOU WILL
ASK WHAT YOU DESIRE, AND IT SHALL BE DONE FOR YOU. BY THIS MY
FATHER IS GLORIFIED, THAT YOU BEAR MUCH FRUIT; SO YOU WILL BE
MY DISCIPLES.” JOHN 15: 7-8

These three passages summarize an important part of our

faith – the great importance of Scripture as a way of
understanding our Creator and His message to mankind. By
memorizing Scripture and regularly praying and reflecting
on it, you will be able to gain a much deeper understanding
of the Word and find increased satisfaction in your life as a
follower of the Messiah. This is something special that no
one can ever take away from you, and you will be able to
encourage and uplift your family, friends, and others in your
community by sharing this joy with them.

Why Memorize the Bible? And How Can it Truly Help You?

Memorizing Scripture can help you come to know how our

Creator has revealed Himself to His creation but it can also
help you in your every day life. By memorizing the Bible, you
will be able to easily recall the Scriptures and that will help
you when it comes to making better decisions and behaving
in a way that is pleasing to our Father. By memorizing the
Bible, you will be able to act in a kinder, more compassionate
way because you will have the Word closer to your heart and
in the forefront of your mind.
When we memorize scripture, we are following in the
footsteps of our Messiah Yeshua (or Jesus, the name most
have come to know Him by). Time and again we see in the
Gospels that Yeshua rebu s those who were attacking him
by recalling passages from Scripture as evidence of the
righteousness of his message. As believers, we follow in the
example of our Messiah and seek to emulate him in the hope
of inheriting the Kingdom of Heaven.
It is important to note that memorizing the Bible is not an
end in itself. Just learning something by heart will not
necessarily bring you closer to an understanding of how our
Father wishes us to live. Memorization will only truly serve
you on your spiritual journey if it is done with the intention
of intimately understanding the Word. Make sure that during
your memorization practice, you take the time to reflect on
the true meaning of Scripture, what it tells us as the body of
Messiah, and what it is telling you as an individual at the
stage where you happen to be at in your life. Over the course
of your lifetime, various Bible passages will speak and guide
you in di erent ways, and it is therefore important to
continually reflect on these Scriptures and refresh your
memory. It would not serve you best to say, “OK, I have
memorized the Bible, now I don’t have to keep working and
learning”. This is not at all the intention of this book, and
none of us have arrived!
Similarly, memorizing the Bible should not be done with
the prideful intention of showing other people how well you
know the Scriptures. Humility is a critically important trait
so we invite you to humbly share whatever knowledge of the
Bible that you’ve been blessed with for the nourishment of
others, not to make them feel bad or inadequate because
they have memorized or studied less than you.

The Long History of Scripture Memorization

There is a longstanding history of memorizing the

Scriptures, and by embarking on this journey, you will be
joining an extensive line of people that stretches back for
thousands of years. 2,000 years ago, followers of Messiah
were a minority. Their faith was considered dangerous and
subversive. Indeed, Yeshua himself was killed because he
was seen as a dangerous figure whose message of love and
compassion threatened the political elite of the time. Being
in the possession of written Scripture as a form of worship
and devotion was therefore very dangerous. Early believers
met in secret to pray and share their knowledge of Scripture
with one another, and memorization was therefore a
critically important part of early life in the body of Messiah
and it was one of the key ways that our brethren were able to
share their faith and grow together as a community.
Prayer and the Holy Spirit

There is one final thing that I wanted to make mention of

before we move on. One of the most important things to do
before beginning to study and memorize Scripture is prayer.
Ask the Father right now to teach you His Word and enable
you through the power of the Holy Spirit to be able to
e ciently memorize it and e ortlessly recall it. Memorizing
Scripture is very important, but it is also vital to understand
what you are committing to memory. The Holy Spirit is not
only our teacher, but the key to remembering what we have
learned.

“BUT THE HELPER, THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHOM THE FATHER WILL
SEND IN MY NAME, HE WILL TEACH YOU ALL THINGS, AND BRING TO
YOUR REMEMBRANCE ALL THINGS THAT I SAID TO YOU.” JOHN 14:26

So with all that said, once again, welcome to this book. I

truly do hope that you enjoy what you are about to learn that
you find it helpful as you begin this exciting spiritual journey
of memorizing the Bible.
PART II
UNDERSTANDING YOUR
LEARNING STYLE

“RECEIVE, I PRAY THEE, THE LAW FROM HIS MOUTH, AND LAY UP HIS WORDS
IN THINE HEART.” JOB 22:22

What is a Learning Style?

The term ‘‘learning style’’ refers to the concept that

individuals di er in regard to what mode of instruction or
study is most e ective for them. In order to maximize your
study of the Bible and ensure that you are using your time in
the most e ective way, it is important to know your learning
style. Armed with this knowledge, you can then tailor your
learning methodology to match your specific learning style.
Any assessment of a learning style will ask you to evaluate
what sort of information presentation you prefer (e.g., words
versus pictures versus speech) and/or what kind of mental
activity you find most engaging or helpful (e.g., analysis
versus listening). That is exactly what we are going to do
now, so let’s continue...
What Type of Learning Style Do You Have?

Everyone learns in a di erent way. No one person learns in

exactly the same way, and there is no “right” or “wrong”
way to succeed in memorizing the Bible. Furthermore, no
one person exclusively uses one learning style – rather we
are a mixture of a variety of styles. It is true to say, however,
that we all have preferences and tendencies to specific styles.
By understanding how you learn, you will ensure that you
learn more e ectively and are better able to retain your
newfound knowledge for longer periods of time.
Researchers in this field have identified that there are
three main learning styles:
1. Visual
2. Auditory
3. Kinesthetic

Discovering Your Learning Style

In the following questionnaire, there is a series of 16

questions that are related to these three main learning
styles. Read each of the questions and carefully select the
answer that best describes you. Please don't think about the
questions too much – just go with your first choice, the one
that speaks to you on an instinctive level. After you answer
each of the following questions, add up the total number of

An Explanation of the Three Learning Styles and How You Can Use
These to Help You Memorize the Bible

If your results show that you chose “a” as your most

common answer, then you are a visual learner. You learn
primarily by seeing and looking. Visual Learners take
numerous detailed notes. You tend to sit in the front of a
lecture or classroom and are usually neat and clean. You may
have a tendency to close your eyes to visualize or remember
something. You will always find something to watch if you
are bored, and you like to see what you are learning. You
benefit greatly from illustrations and presentations that use
color, and are attracted to written or spoken language that is
rich in imagery. As a visual learner, you prefer that stimuli is
isolated from auditory and kinesthetic distraction and find
passive surroundings ideal. Information on pictures, charts,
or diagrams is much easier to remember than the same
information presented to you in verbal form.
You visualize things as you learn them, often looking into
the distance as if you are "seeing" the information. You
create vivid images of information in your mind. When
learning the Articles of the Constitution, you may envision
yourself in the room with the Founding Fathers as they
discussed them. Your spatial skills are very strong: sizes,
shapes, textures, angles, perspectives – these are all easy for
you to grasp. You're able to "read" people by their body
language, knowing what they're really thinking, even as they
say something else. You're very aware of your environment,
and have a strong appreciation for aesthetics, art, and other
visual media.

Advice on Study Techniques for Memorizing the Bible:

Take Notes: As a visual learner, you likely will not remember

everything that someone says to you out loud. That’s why it
is critical to take notes while you are studying to memorize
the Bible. Write down key phrases that you are having
particular di culty in remembering. Once you have finished
reviewing a particular passage of the Bible, re-read and re-
write out the passage that you are trying to commit to
memory. Because you’re a visual learner, that process of
reading and seeing the words will help commit the particular
Bible passage to memory.
Write Outlines: One way that will help you commit Bible
passages to your long term memory is to create outlines for a
particular passages or books of the Bible that you want to
memorize. The sole purpose of an outline is to organize the
information so that it is clear to you and specifies how each
passage fits together. The process of outlining is especially
useful for those who learn best through sight because
thinking through the text – and writing it in outline form –
will help you create a visual pattern that’s easy for you to
understand and recall clearly at a later date.
Mark Up Your Materials: Multi-colored highlighters are a
visual learner’s best friend because you are likely to
remember what you read based on the colors which appear
on the paper. Assign each color a value that you’ll need to
recall, and then use the appropriate colors as you read the
Bible. This may mean that you need to have two copies of the
Bible, one which you use for every day prayer and reflection
(which remains without marks) and the other for your
memorization studies.
If you chose mainly b's, you are most likely an auditory
learner. You learn by hearing and listening. As an auditory
learner, you generally sit in a learning space where you can
hear but needn't pay attention to what is happening in front
of you. You might find that you do not coordinate colors or
clothes, but can clearly explain why you are wearing the
outfit you have on. You may find that you often hum or talk
to yourself or others when bored. You acquire knowledge by
reading aloud and remember things by verbalizing lessons to
yourself. When you do not read things aloud you sometimes
have di culty understanding maps, diagrams or handling
conceptual assignments like mathematics.
Your first priority as an auditory learner is to pay
attention when someone is reading passages from the Bible
aloud since listening is how you will retain information. You
should also record yourself or someone else reading the Bible
aloud. Most smart phones and tablets have the ability to
record audio and this is a simple way you can really improve
your memorization technique. Take advantage of this
technology and record as much as possible. Remember, if
you are recording another person make sure they are aware
of this and that they are happy for you to do so. If the person
seems uneasy, just let them know that this is for your own
use to help you study in the future and that you will not
publish them online without their permission.
Participate in Prayer or Study Groups: As an auditory learner,
you will be able to memorize larger passages from the Bible
best by hearing information and explaining the meaning to
friends and family. Study groups can be an excellent way to
practice in this type of auditory learning since you are
spending the majority of time talking with others. However,
you need to be careful in a study group to make sure that the
information you learn is correct and you’re staying on task.
Prayer groups are also useful because they give you the
opportunity not just to memorize the Bible but also to pray
about the meaning of the text you are memorizing.
Remember as we discussed in Chapter 1, memorizing just for
the sake of it has little real value for your life as a follower of
Messiah. Memorizing in order to deepen your spiritual
understanding and grow closer to the Creator is what will
truly bring you peace and wisdom.
Talk Out Loud: Auditory learners need to – literally – hear
themselves think. Find a quiet place to study where you can
recite Scripture passages out loud.
Use Word Association: Word association is a great way for
auditory learners to study and memorize longer passages
and even entire books. Mnemonic devices, such as songs or
rhymes, are very e ective and highly recommended. Your
brain will automatically recall the song and the information
it represents.
If you had mostly c's, you are more than likely a
kinesthetic learner. You learn by touching and doing. As a
kinesthetic learner you need to be active and take frequent
breaks when learning. You learn with your hands and with
gestures. You will often find that you remember what was
done, but have di culty recalling what was said or seen. You
find reasons to tinker or move when bored and rely on what
you can directly experience in order to learn something
e ectively. You learn through performing activities such as
cooking, construction, engineering, and art because they
help them perceive the problem or learning content. You
enjoy field trips and tasks that involve manipulating
materials. If you are learning in a classroom, you will find
that you naturally choose to sit near the door or someplace
else where you can easily get up and move around. You will
find that you tend to be uncomfortable in a traditional
classroom space. This is because you lack opportunities for
hands-on experiences, which in turn limits your learning.
You communicate by touching and appreciate physically
expressed encouragement, such as a pat on the back.
Oftentimes, kinesthetic learners feel their way of learning
isn’t as good because they can’t “sit and do the work,” but
there are lots of ways to maximize your learning style. When
you are memorizing the Bible consider trying out some of
the five techniques that are outlined here, you should find
that the information you are trying to memorize sticks in
your mind more easily.
Take Breaks When Studying: As a kinesthetic learner you
often have a hard time sitting still for long periods. Make
sure that you take frequent (but not overly lengthy) breaks
while studying. These quick study breaks will give your mind
a chance to renew itself and refocus when you sit down to
study again.
Combine an Activity with Studying: You will retain
information best when you are doing practical activities. Try
going for a walk or run while listening to audio recordings of
the Bible. If you’re doing a work out at a gym, review your
stack of flashcards and outlines while you use the elliptical
machine.
Keep Your Fingers Busy While Reading the Bible: One way
that you can stay focused as a kinesthetic learner is to
engage your fingers in the studying process. For example,
trace words and re-write sentences to learn key Bible
passages. Typing out particular passages and using the
computer is another great way to reinforce your learning
because you are engaging your mind through the sense of
touch.
PART III
FACTORS THAT WILL HELP YOU
SUCCEED IN YOUR JOURNEY

“WHATEVER YOU DO, WORK AT IT WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AS

WORKING FOR THE LORD, NOT FOR MEN.” COLOSSIANS 3:23

In this chapter you will find guidance to help you succeed in

your quest to memorize the Bible. When you start out
learning the Bible it might seem like a huge, insurmountable
challenge, but do not worry, I am here to help. The following
chapter will explain di erent things you should think about
and practical tips you can use to ensure that you are
successful and continue to feel motivated – even when it
feels like you will not achieve your goal. Always remember,
stay positive… you can do this!

Understanding Your Motivation for Memorizing the Bible

Understanding why you want to memorize the Bible is an

important first step in ensuring success. If we know why we
want to do something then we often feel more motivated,
focused, and excited about the task ahead of us.
Take a moment to reflect and pray about your motivation.
Perhaps it is to deepen your knowledge and connection with
the Creator, or perhaps it is to create a deeper bond within
your congregation by sharing His Word together. Whatever
your motivation, make sure you write down your reasons.
Having a physical record will remind you and keep you
focused when you feel like you are struggling on your quest.
Put your list up on the wall where you usually study, or keep
it in your wallet so you can regularly take it out and remind
yourself.

Diet, Health and Well-Being

We all know that a healthy, well balanced diet is essential for

a long life. However did you know that there are certain
foods that can actually help improve your memory?
Scientists have discovered that people who eat foods that are
high in saturated fats or have a diet that is high in red meat
have worse memories than those that have a diet that is rich
in fruits, vegetables and oily fish. People that have a diet that
is high in things like soda drinks or processed foods are less
likely to be able to record information as easily. A recent
publication from the Harvard Medical School tells us that if
“saturated and trans fats are the food villains, then mono-
and polyunsaturated fats may be the heroes in the dietary
battle to preserve memory. In particular, the Mediterranean
diet.”
The Mediterranean diet includes several components that
might promote a good memory, and it would therefore be a
good idea to consider eating lots of the following foods:
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and olive oil help
improve the health of blood vessels, while reducing the risk
for a memory-damaging stroke.
Fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been
linked to lower levels of beta-amyloid proteins in the blood
and better vascular health.
Moderate alcohol consumption raises levels of healthy
high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Alcohol also
lowers our cells’ resistance to insulin, allowing it to lower
blood sugar more e ectively. Insulin resistance has been
linked to dementia.
Exercise is also an important factor in helping to keep
your memory fresh and strong. Have you ever had that
feeling when you are sitting at your desk or studying where
you feel lethargic or just a bit sleepy? You feel that you
cannot concentrate properly and that you realize that you
have read an entire page of text but have not actually
retained any of the information? This could be because
oxygen is not circulating around your body e ectively. This
will mean that your mind is not as sharp or as focused as it
needs to be in order to e ectively memorize the text you are
working on. If you feel this starting to happen, just take a
few minutes to rest. Get up and walk around the room, bend
your legs and swing your arms around, stretch your entire
body upwards as if you were trying to touch the ceiling; any
way to get your body moving. You could even go for a short
walk or just step outside for a few moments to get some
fresh air. Having oxygen flowing around your body is the
key.

Routine, Consistency, and Some Pointers for Keeping Up With Your

Studies

Memorizing large portions of Scripture may feel like a

daunting task, and if you think about it in this way then it
might seem like an impossible feat. It is important,
therefore, to break things down into smaller, realistic
sections. Do not attempt to memorize everything in one go.
If you do, you may be setting yourself up for failure and
frustration. Indeed, many people have failed in their attempt
to memorize Scripture by trying to do too much in a short
space of time, and in the end they feel frustrated and
eventually give up entirely.
Make sure you set aside time every day for study,
preferably at the same time each day and in the same place.
Consistency is really important in this task, even if you just
do 30 minutes – it is important for you to do this each and
every day. If you study for 30 minutes one day, 3 hours the
next, and then do nothing for a week, you will not be
maximizing your learning e ort.
An important key to memorization success is to set goals.
In that way you have something to work towards and you
will also be able to measure your overall progress and
success. This will help to give you structure and track how
much you are learning and in what time frame. You will
notice that over time, as you become more skilled in your
study techniques and as your memorization skills improve,
that the rate at which you are able to learn speeds up. This
will give you a great sense of satisfaction and motivation to
keep learning.
Lastly, remember to enjoy your studies! If this is a task
that you are excited to undertake and if you feel happy as you
work through the memorization process, you are far more
likely to succeed. If you feel like this is an onerous, boring
and pointless task, then it stands to reason that you will not
enjoy what you are doing and will subsequently see poor
results.
You are now ready to start memorizing the Bible. You
understand the type of learner you are, your motivation for
memorizing the Bible, proper dietary requirements, and
recommended study tips. In the next chapter, we will go over
some excellent exercises that will help you test how well you
have memorized each section.
PART IV
PRACTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR
MEMORIZING THE BIBLE

“MY HANDS ALSO WILL I LIFT UP UNTO THY COMMANDMENTS, WHICH I HAVE
LOVED; AND I WILL MEDITATE IN THY STATUTES.” PSALM 119:48

“HE BECOMETH POOR THAT DEALETH [WITH] A SLACK HAND: BUT THE
HAND OF THE DILIGENT MAKETH RICH.” PROVERBS 10:4

Memorizing the Bible Verbatim: Recalling not Repeating

The first Scripture memorization method that we would like

to introduce you to is one that has been extremely e ective
in the memorization of Scripture. This method puts forward
that memorization by rote is one important way to
memorize the Bible. Memorizing through the repetition of
passages will, through hard work and perseverance, greatly
assist you in your memorization of the Word. Remember:
memorization is a process; it is not something that happens
over night. It is important to recognize that memorizing
something through repetition requires time and dedication.
It is an active process – you cannot simply read the words 30
times and automatically have the particular passage
committed to memory. Indeed, you must go in to this
process with an enthusiastic and open heart. I would like to
encourage you to think of this process of repetition as a
form of recollection.
An e ective way of remembering something by rote is to
recall, not repeat. These two concepts might seem quite
similar, but in fact they are very di erent ways of
memorizing text. Simply reading a particular piece of text
over and over again is going to be the long and frustrating
road to memorization. You need to let your brain practice
recalling the information.
Below is the first chapter of John’s Gospel. The technique
that we will now outline will allow you to memorize this
passage in three simple steps.
Here are the steps…
Step one: read the text below. Read it silently, to yourself.
Think about the meaning and ask yourself, what are we
learning about our Creator here? How does this bring me to a
better understanding of Yeshua Messiah? What section do I
particularly like? Is there a section that confuses me or that
remains unclear in meaning?
Step two. You will now read the text for a second time, but
this time read it aloud. Listen to your voice and the natural
rhythm it makes. Consider reading it aloud to a friend or
family member, and if you are studying in a group, invite
others to read some or all of the extract to the rest of the
group. Discuss together what this passage means, and reflect
together on the di erent ideas that are presented. Here is the
passage that we will use as an example:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. The same was in the
beginning with God. All things were made by him; and
without him was not any thing made that was made. In
him was life; and the life was the light of men.5 And the
light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended
it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was
John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the
Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not
that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That
was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh
into the world. He was in the world, and the world was
made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto
his own, and his own received him not. But as many as
received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were
born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will
of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and
dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of
the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of
whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before
me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we
received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by
Moses, but grace and truth came by Yeshua Messiah. No
man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son,
which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests
and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And
he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the
Messiah. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias?
And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he
answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that
we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest
thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the
wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the
prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the
Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why
baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Messiah, nor Elias,
neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I
baptize with water: but there standeth one among you,
whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is
preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy
to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond
Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John seeth
Yeshua coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of
God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

Step 3: Now that you have read this section twice and
reflected on the meaning, you are ready to start seeing how
much you can recall without looking at the text. Try doing
this now. How did you do? I’m guessing that you are not yet
able to remember the entire passage! Now we need to come
up with a method to give our brain just enough information
to recall the original text without simply reading the
original. Let’s look at the section of text below:

I t b w t W, a t W w w G, a t W w G. T s w i t b w G. A t w

What we’ve done is taken the first letter of each word of this
section of John’s Gospel. Now try to recite the verses while
looking at the text above. I am sure you can now recall a lot
more than when you were doing it completely from memory.
You’ll probably get part way into it and get confused.
Backup a few letters and look beyond the letter you are
struggling with to see if you can figure it out. Remember,
you are trying to help your brain find the right connections,
to recall the text, not to blindly remember it. If you have to
consult the original, make note of what confused you and
simply start over. With each time that you repeat the text, try
to look at the prompts less and less. Imagine the prompts in
your minds eye and see how far you can get. Eventually, you
will be able to recite the entire chapter without even looking
at the prompts!

Memorization Techniques for Visual Learners

Remember in Chapter 2 where you diagnosed your learning

style? If you came out as a visual learner, we are now going
to present you with three solid techniques that you can begin
using today to memorize the Bible. Remember that it is
highly unlikely that you will fit in to one learning style 100%
of the time. Make sure you look at the learning techniques
for other learning styles, as you may find that they are also
helpful in your journey to memorizing the Bible.
Before you start to work make sure your environment is
the most conducive to your learning style. Remember, you
are easily distracted by visual queues. Sit in a peaceful
environment. Go where there are no distractions, nothing
that will visually catch your eye. Avoiding "shiny objects"
will allow you to focus on what it is that you need to
memorize. This means no TV, open windows, or those crazy
cat clocks with the squirrelly eyes that move back and forth.
Another important tip for visual learners is to move around
while studying. Pace around the room while studying and
repeating the particular Bible passage to yourself. By walking
around, you will be using both your right and left brain and
will subsequently be able to memorize passages much easier.

Writing Down the Passage You Want to Memorize

It is an excellent practice to frequently write and rewrite the

passages you are trying to memorize. Make sure that you
have a note board in your area of study or somewhere in your
house that you will pass by regularly. When you pass it, read
it aloud, and then take the note down, re-write it on a fresh
Post-It note or card, and then replace the existing one. If you
are having particular di culty with one particular passage,
take the old note and put it somewhere else where you will
see it more often, perhaps on your fridge. Before you know
it, you will be able to recite this section of Scripture quickly
and easily. Lastly, it’s a good idea to keep a record of each of
the passages that you have memorized. Make sure to look at
these notes regularly and review them so you do not forget
something that you have already learned.

The Journey Method

The journey method is a mnemonic technique based around
the idea of remembering landmarks on a well-known
journey. As the journeys used are distinct in location and
form, one passage of text remembered using this technique
is easy to distinguish from other passages. Some investment
in clearly preparing journeys in your mind is needed in order
to use this technique. This investment will, however, pay o
many times over by the application of the technique. This
journey could, for example, be your journey to work in the
morning, the route you use to get to the front door when you
get up in the morning, the route to visit your parents, or
your journey to a local Bible study.
To use this technique most e ectively, it is usually best to
prepare the journey beforehand so that the landmarks are
clear in your mind before you try to commit information to
them. One way of doing this is to write down all the
landmarks that you can recall in order on a piece of paper.
This allows you to fix these landmarks as the significant
ones to be used in your mnemonic, separating them from
others that you may notice as you get to know the route even
better. I may choose to associate this with my journey from
my home to the regular location of our weekly Bible study.
My mnemonic images therefore appear as: 1. Front door:
After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day. 2. Walking
down the garden path to the gate saying: And Job spake, and said,
Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it
was said, There is a man child conceived 3. I see the rose bush in
front garden: Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from
above, neither let the light shine upon it. Let darkness and the
shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the
blackness of the day terrify it. 4. Take out my car keys: As for that
night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days
of the year, let it not come into the number of the months. 5. Car:
Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein. Let
them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their
mourning. 6. Speed bump on my road. Let the stars of the twilight
thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it
see the dawning of the day: 7. End of the road: Because it shut not
up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine
eyes. Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not give up the
ghost when I came out of the belly? Why did the knees prevent
me? or why the breasts that I should suck? 8. Past the gas station:
For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have
slept: then had I been at rest, With kings and counsellors of the
earth, which built desolate places for themselves; Or with princes
that had gold, who filled their houses with silver. 9. Under railway
bridge: Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants
which never saw light. There the wicked cease from troubling;
and there the weary be at rest. There the prisoners rest together;
they hear not the voice of the oppressor. 10. Tra c lights: The
small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.
Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the
bitter in soul; Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for
it more than for hid treasures; 11. Past the cinema: Which rejoice
exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? Why is
light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath
hedged in? For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings
are poured out like the waters. 12. Driveway of our meeting place:
For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that
which I was afraid of is come unto me. I was not in safety, neither
had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came. Congratulations!
You have arrived at Bible study and successfully memorized
Chapter 3 of the book of Job!

Concept Maps

For visual learners, writing an outline of a section of

scripture they wish to memorize will be extremely helpful.
Write down the main ideas of the passage, the key message,
and some of the most important phrases that stick in your
mind. As a visual learner you should use mind maps to help
graphically organize the content. The most common way to
do this is to put the main idea in the center of the page (for
example the passage that you are trying to commit to
memory), then draw branches out to other ideas. This is a
great visual learning tool because it lets you see how
di erent parts of the text relate to each other. Color-coding
is also very important for visual learners, as it will help you
to recall the information at a later date.

Memorization Techniques for Auditory Learners

Auditory learners find that conventional study practices,

such as making notes, are not terribly e ective. You may
prefer to ingest information through audio or video clips, or
by discussing a topic with others. As such, there are a
number of techniques that you might consider employing to
help you memorize the Bible; singing, watching videos, and
recording your own voice.

Singing or Creating Rhythm

Singing is a useful way that kinesthetic learners can commit

something to memory. You can create your own rhythms or music
when memorizing a text. Additionally, hymns are a good way to
keep bible passages clear in your mind. There are many songs that
have been written using passages from the Bible, particularly the
Psalms. You could also try searching online for the particular
passage that you wish to memorize; there are many sites such as
YouTube which could be extremely helpful in the memorization
process.

Watching Videos

There are a number of excellent videos, plays, and stories

available that reflect the Scriptures, word for word. A simple
online search will give you a variety of option when it comes to
videos you can watch. Make sure you are “actively” watching
these videos and are focused on the task of taking in the words so
that you can commit them to memory. If you are passively
watching, then it will be almost impossible to remember the
words once you turn the video o . Watch the video many times
and each time remember to recite along with the sections that you
remember. You will find that each time you can say a little more
until you can remember the entire section. When you are able to
do that, turn the video o and recite the section of the Bible aloud
by yourself. Be sure to check to make sure that you have all the
words correctly remembered.

Record Yourself

Record yourself talking and then play it back and listen to

yourself. Set the recording on a loop, and then listen to the
passage that you are trying to memorize over and over again. You
can listen to it while you are at the gym or even walking the dog.
Consistently hearing the text will impress it upon your mind. You
can also listen to your recordings while you are sleeping to help
reinforce particular passages that you have already gone over.
After you heave heard the play back a number of times, have a go
at repeating the passage. Where there are sections that you are
less confident, go back and listen to the tape again, focusing on
these specific areas. In no time at all, you will have it completely
memorized.
It is also really important that you listen to others. If you have
to remember Bible readings, try taping them and then listen to
them when you are by yourself. This will help your mind to retain
the information.

Memorization Techniques for Kinesthetic Learners

The Roman Room Technique

The Roman Room technique is an e ective way of
remembering information in a way that requires you to take
a physical journey. Remember, as a Kinesthetic learner you
respond well to the physical world, through touch, smell,
and movement.
This technique functions by imagining a room (e.g. your
sitting room or bedroom) or being physically in a room.
Within that room, you will see a number of objects. The
technique works by associating passages of text from the
Bible with those objects. To recall information, simply take a
tour around the room touching the known objects and saying
aloud the related passages of Scripture.
Stand in a room that you know well – if this is not
possible for some reason then it is fine to imagine it. Perhaps
this is your sitting room, a bedroom, an o ce, or a
classroom. Within this room there are features and objects in
known positions. The basis of the Roman Room system is
that things that need to be remembered are associated with
these objects, so that by recalling the objects within the
room all the text can also be recalled.
For example, I can imagine my sitting room as a basis for
the technique. In my sitting room I can visualise the
following objects:
Table, lamp, sofa, large bookcase, small bookcase, CD rack,
tape racks, stereo system, telephone, television, video, chair,
mirror, black & white photographs, etc.
Let’s suppose that I want to remember the Sermon on the
Mount from the gospel of Matthew.
I could visualise looking at the door of the living room,
which has a picture on it from the Sermon on the Mount.
There is an image of Yeshua standing in front of the
gathered crowd. Below is an example of an image you may
wish to use. I take the picture o the door and hold it in my
right hand. In the picture I can clearly see 10 people listening
to Yeshua (there are 12 people in total but two of them are
partially obscured and therefore are not helpful for our
purposes). When I look at the image I am reminded of
Matthew chapter 5…

1
And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain:
and when He was set, his disciples came unto Him:
2
And He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying,
3
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven.
4
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after
righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the
children of God.
10
Blessed are they, which are persecuted for
righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute
you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for
my sake.
Using the image I relate each verse to a person in the
picture, for example when I look at the image of Yeshua I
remember the phrases; “And seeing the multitudes, He went up
into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto
him: And He opened his mouth, and taught them, saying.” When
I look at the image of the man, dressed in dark gray and
sitting on the far left hand side of the picture, I remember
the phrase, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.” When I look at the image of the man in
the reddish/orange cloak (next to the man in dark gray), I
remember the phrase, “Blessed are they that mourn: for they
shall be comforted.” Carry on this sequence until each person
in the image is associated with a particular phrase from
verses 1-11 of Matthew Chapter 5.
Taking this image, that is still in your right hand, walk
into the sitting room, and look at the table. On the top is
your Bible open to Matthew Chapter 5. You put your finger
on verse 12 and say aloud: “Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for
great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the
prophets which were before you. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if
the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden
under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set
on a hill cannot be hid.”
You notice that someone has been moving things around
because the lamp that is normally in the corner is now next
to the table where you Bible is. The light is very bright, but
on the lampshade you can see that there is some text. You
squint your eyes to read it and say aloud: “Neither do men
light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and
it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine
before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your
Father, which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to destroy
the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For
verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one
tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
Keep moving around the room identifying objects and
relating them to specific pieces of text that you wish to
memorize. You will be amazed at how quickly you will be
able to memorize large portions of the text.
This technique can be expanded in one way: by going into
more detail and keying images to smaller objects.
Alternatively you can open the doors from the room you are
using into other rooms, and use their objects to expand the
volume of information stored. When you have more
experience with this, you may find that you can build
extensions to your rooms in your imagination, and populate
them with objects that would logically be there. Moreover,
there is no need to restrict this information to rooms: you
can also use a view or a town you know well, and populate it
with memory images.

Role Play

As we have discovered in Chapter 2, Kinesthetic learners

achieve the best results by engaging their bodies as they
learn. Making a section of the Bible into a story or a play and
writing a script may be one of the best ways to memorize the
Bible. For example, in the Gospel of Mark Chapter 2, we have
the telling us of Yeshua’s power of forgiveness. Turn this
chapter into a script with di erent “parts”. You can then act
out the di erent roles and invite friends, family members,
and study partners to help you bring this section of the Bible
to life.

Narrator 1: And again He entered into Capernaum

after some days; and it was noised that He was in
the house. And straightway many were gathered
together, insomuch that there was no room to
receive them, no, not so much as about the door:
and He preached the word unto them. And they
come unto Him, bringing one sick of the palsy,
which was borne of four. And when they could
not come nigh unto Him for the press, they
uncovered the roof where He was: and when they
had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein
the sick of the palsy lay. When Yeshua saw their
faith, He said unto the sick of the palsy,
Yeshua: Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
Narrator 2: But there were certain of the scribes
sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why
doth this man thus speak blasphemies? Who can
forgive sins but God only? And immediately when
Yeshua perceived in His spirit that they so
reasoned within themselves, He said unto them,
Yeshua: Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy,
Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and
take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know
that the Son of man hath power on earth to
forgive sins, (He saith to the sick of the palsy,) I
say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go
thy way into thine house.
Narrator 1: And immediately he arose, took up the
bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch
that they were all amazed, and glorified God,
saying, We never saw it on this fashion. And He
went forth again by the sea side; and all the
multitude resorted unto Him, and He taught
them.
Narrator 2: And as He passed by, he saw Levi the son
of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and
said unto him,
Yeshua: Follow Me.
Narrator 2: And he arose and followed Him. And it
came to pass, that, as Yeshua sat at meat in his
house, many publicans and sinners sat also
together with Yeshua and His disciples: for there
were many, and they followed Him. And when
the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eat with
publicans and sinners, they said unto His
disciples,
Pharisees: How is it that He eateth and drinketh with
publicans and sinners?
Narrator 1: When Yeshua heard it, He saith unto
them,
Yeshua: They that are whole have no need of the
physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call
the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Narrator 1: And the disciples of John and of the
Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say
unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the
Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? And
Yeshua said unto them,
Yeshua: Can the children of the bridechamber fast,
while the bridegroom is with them? as long as
they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot
fast. But the days will come, when the
bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and
then shall they fast in those days. No man also
seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment:
else the new piece that filled it up taketh away
from the old, and the rent is made worse. And no
man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the
new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is
spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new
wine must be put into new bottles.
Narrator 2: And it came to pass, that He went
through the cornfields on the Sabbath day; and
His disciples began, as they went, to pluck the
ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto Him,
Pharisees: Behold, why do they on the Sabbath day
that which is not lawful?
Narrator 1: And He said unto them,
Yeshua: Have ye never read what David did, when he
had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that
were with him? How he went into the house of
God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and
did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat
but for the priests, and gave also to them which
were with him?
Narrator2: And He said unto them,
Yeshua: The Sabbath was made for man, and not
man for the Sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is
Lord also of the Sabbath.

Take a Practice Test

This activity is best done in pairs or groups. In this way, you
can create a test for your study partner and they can make
one for you. Take a good break after the test and then use
your study notes to grade yourself. What passages or
sections did you forget? What could you have done to write
the section or passage in a way that was more accurate?
Grading yourself is also a way of improving your memory. If
you have time, study further and repeat the test a few days
letter. Hopefully, you will do much better on your next try.
Here is an example of a test you could give yourself, but
make sure that you keep inventing your own tests.
Simply fill in the missing gaps with the correct phrases.

himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right
hand,
35
Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
36
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly,
that God hath made that same Yeshua, whom ye have
crucified, both Lord and Messiah.
37
Now when they heard this,
(7)________________, ______________ what
shall we do?
38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Yeshua Messiah for the
remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit.
39
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and
to all that are afar o , even as many as the Lord our God
shall call.
40
And with many other words did he testify and exhort,
saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three
thousand souls.
42
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine
and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43
And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and
signs were done by the apostles.
44
And all that believed were together, and had all things
common;
45
And (8)______________________, and
parted them to all men, as every man had need.
46
And they, continuing daily with one accord in the
temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat
their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
47
Praising God, and having favour with all the people.
And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be
saved.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

“THE LAW OF HIS GOD IS IN HIS HEART; NONE OF HIS STEPS SHALL SLIDE.”
PSALM 37:31

We have come to the end of our book, however this is really

just the beginning of your journey.
Throughout this work, I hope that I have impressed upon
you the importance of Bible memorization. Over and over
again, we are instructed throughout the Scriptures to
memorize the Bible and to hold the word of God closely in
our hearts. It has been my desire to encourage you to think
about your own motivation for memorizing the Bible and I
hope to have given you some guidance on the type of study
routines and techniques you should consider as you begin to
commit our Creator’s Word to memory. The main part of this
work has focused on ensuring that you understand your own
learning style. By understanding how you learn best, you
provide yourself with the best chance of successfully
memorizing the Bible. We reviewed some useful study tips
and also covered concrete methods and exercises that you
can begin using right away to memorize the Bible.
I truly hope that you have found this book helpful, and
that you continue to find it a useful tool as you progress
along your learning journey. Remember that consistency and
perseverance are key factors when it comes to Scripture
memorization – the importance of these things should never
be underestimated. This book contains advice, methods and
techniques, but the hard work really comes from you and
your commitment to study and pray. I hope that this book
will serve you well, proving to be a helpful resource and
providing you with the support you need during this journey
– especially if you currently find that your goal is a huge
challenge or a far o dream. Always remember that all is
possible through our Messiah Yeshua – the One gives us
strength (Philippians 4:13). You can do it!
Last but not least, I have a huge favor to ask. :)
If this book was a blessing to you, there’s something
super quick and easy that you can do for me to help spread
the word about it… you can post a review!
As an independent author, reviews are a massive help in
getting the word out. Since I am not backed by a major
publishing house and don’t have a big advertising budget,
your review will be extremely helpful as it will be an
encouragement to others to pick up the book.
