NOTE: In reality, all of these are merely suggestions. It is the current set of officers’ decision whether
they will adopt this proposal completely, or at least parts of it. If however the officers decide to adopt
certain parts, you’ll see objects inside brackets “[ ]” which indicates optionality and may be modified,
changed, or removed.

I. PROJECT DETAILS:

Title: [Ateneo Against Single-Use Plastics]

Theme: [All yours].
Duration: A/Y 2016-2017
Proponent: Ateneo de Naga Biology Majors (ANBioM)

II. RATIONALE

The biosphere is experiencing several perturbations, the most pressing of which are due to
human impacts. Examples of these disturbances are our massive emission of greenhouse gases, our
unprecedented destruction of natural habitats, our reckless eradication of species, and our
uncontrollable discharge of pollution. In truth, these are just a few of the environmental issues our
planet suffers from. But much of the environmental issues we have share one thing in common – they
have arisen from the misguided ideologies of anthropocentrism.
The ANBioM is both a co-curricular and environmental organization. Some of the organization’s
working principles include education on environmental issues and, the conservation of the natural
world. These principles are in lined with the Ignatian values instilled in all Jesuit schools. For example,
the ANBioM believes and is committed to “finding God in all things”, and be “men and women for
others”. Therefore, as Ateneans, the ANBioM has this strong urge to take the initiative of raising the
awareness of not only the Ateneo community, but the citizens of Naga City.

III. INTRODUCTION

In this proposal, the ANBioM will focus on one environmental issue, and make it the
organization’s advocacy for the entire schoolyear. [That environmental advocacy is to pave the way
for banning the utilization of single-use plastic inside the campus.] (You do a research on all the ways
single-use plastic is negatively impacting the biosphere. OR another environmental issue the officers
decide on pursuing. Add another paragraph here, or two.)

IV. OOBJECTIVES

The main objective of this proposal is to raise the awareness and education of the Ateneo
community with regard to the negative impacts single-use plastics have on our environment. To
achieve this general goal, the proposal has the following specific objectives:

1. Educate and mobilize all the members of the ANBioM.

2. Educate other members of the Ateneo community regarding single-use plastics.
3. Form a coalition of organizations that will work together in realizing the ideals of this proposal.
4. Propose policies on with regard to single-use plastics on a university-wide level.

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES AND RESPECTIVE DETAILS

To effectively gain momentum for ANBioM’s advocacy, several activities will be held for the
succeeding months. Moreover, the general idea is that with each successive activity, more and more
individuals in the Ateneo community will be informed, and hopefully get involved. Below is a
summary of all the activities that will be conducted within the A/Y 2016-2017:

ACTIVITY MONTH
1. Sign Teasers August
2. ANBioM Educational Campaign August
3. Ateneo Community Educational Campaign September
4. Arts Contest October
5. Signature Campaign inside Ateneo November
6. Parade/Rally Around Naga City December

A. Sign Teasers

a.1 Program

Earl Nightingale once said, “Everything begins with an idea.” And to stir the minds of the Ateneo
community, [ten] signposts will be strategically scattered around campus. Each sign post will
contain thought provoking questions and/or ideas related to this proposal’s theme. [Each
signpost will be shuffled every week, for a month. OR A different question and/or idea will be
displayed in each signpost every week, for a month.] Listed below are the questions which will
be displayed on the signposts:

1. [What is BIODIVERSITY?]
2. [How is BIODDIVERSITY relevant in my everyday life?]
3. [What are single-use plastics?]
4. [What are some of my actions which affects the environment?]
5. [Am I part of the EVIRONMENT?]
6. [How are MY ACTIONS AFFECTING the ENVIRONMENT?]
7. [Am I APATHETIC to my ENVIRONMENT too?]
8. [Why protect/conserve MY ENVIRONMENT?]

B. ANBioM Educational Campaign and Strategic Planning

b.1 Program

An educational campaign will be held internally for ALL the members of the ANBioM and BANHI.
For one full day, the ANBioM will listen to a series of lecturers, and be assigned to the different
activities in this proposal. The day will be divided into a morning, and an afternoon session. The
morning session will hold four lectures from different professors/authorities (from inside and/or
outside the campus) who will talk about single-use plastics and its negative impacts on the
environment. The morning session will bring students up to speed on the current status of
single-use plastics. The afternoon session on the other hand will be devoted for a strategic
planning of ANBioM’s future steps, in order to achieve the objectives of this proposal.

Invitations will be sent to competent and esteemed individuals who can impart their knowledge
and experiences regarding the issue of single-use plastics to the members of the ANBioM. The
officers will also coordinate with the Department Chair and all the faculty members, and discuss
potential measures in ensuring the attendance of all the members of the ANBioM (e.g. requiring
attendance from respective classes, subject incentives, prioritization for preregistration, etc).

C. Ateneo Community Educational Campaign

c.1 Program

Five small booths will be setup around campus. The locations of each booth are as follows;
Xavier Hall, Eight Pillars, Dolan Building (ground floor), O’Brien Library (near the steps), and
Richie Fernando Hall (lobby). In each booth, quick facts on; 1) what single-use plastics are, 2)
how single-use plastics are impacting the environment, and 3) single-use plastics commonly
used by students will be visually and creatively displayed. [Also, each booth will dispense fliers
containing said quick facts. The booths will stay for a period of [two weeks] in the month of
September. [The highlight of the educational campaign will be a talk from three to four
renowned scientists and/or environmental managers from the national level. The officers will
identify and invite these individuals to give a 15-45 minute talk about single-use plastics from
their respective backgrounds. The officers will also coordinate with the Department Chair and
instructors of Environmental Science classes to require their students to attend the said talk. The
ANBIoM is also required to attend the talk. (May idea pa kamo to boost/enhance the
educational campaign?)

E. Signature Campaign Inside Ateneo

e.1 Program

The ANBioM officers will coordinate with the Supreme Student Government (SSG) as well as
other environmental organizations (e.g. BANHI, Nature Crusaders, and Eagles) to help raise the
awareness and education on single-use plastics, on a university-wide level. The main goal of this
collaboration is to start a signature campaign to make Ateneo de Naga University a “Single-Use
Plastic Responsible University”. (We will have to define the terms we want Ateneo to
“observe/follow” since we know the science. We’ll be able to better define the parameters once
we have educated ourselves sufficiently on the remaining months of the first semester.) The
secondary goal is to form a coalition of organizations that will help achieve the goals of this
proposal. To be precise, the coalition will help ANBioM plan, organize, and realize the remaining
activities of this proposal.

F. Parade/Rally Around Naga City

f.1 Program

With the ANBioM taking the initiative, the formed coalition will coordinate with the city
government to organize a parade/rally around Naga City. The general idea is to have the
member organizations of the coalition to produce unique and creative floats which reflect the
ideals of this proposal. The main objective of this activity is to instill in the consciousness of
Nagueños that single-use plastics have negative impacts on the environment. The ANBioM
officers will also communicate with the local ABS-CBN to ensure that the parade/rally land on
media coverage. [We could invite Tanikala and other willing environmentally-oriented bands to
play a few numbers in Plaza Quince Martires or the grandstand beside Plaza Rizal. OR invite
Tanikala sa STD.]
