Product lifecycle
management

Product lifecycle management (PLM) is an essential element in

effectively creating and using global innovation networks to
enable organizations and their partners to collaborate at every
stage of the product lifecycle. PLM provides businesses with
unified information at every stage of the product life cycle
include planning, development, execution, and support.

A PLM
Strategy

PLM can be viewed as both an information strategy and as an enterprise

strategy.

PLM Software Features

• Bill of materials (BOM) management — A lot goes into building your product. You will need various materials and
different quantities of each. PLM software helps keep track of this information and enables the management,
visualization, and sharing of data across any team in your company.

• Change management — Bringing a product to life is a difficult task, and there will likely be many changes along the
way. Change management ensures that there is an orderly process to request, plan, implement, and evaluate the
changes to a design or process related to the product.
• Reporting and analytics — Product data storage is one of the key components of a PLM system. To best utilize the
product information stored within the platform, a PLM solution should have robust reporting capabilities.
• Quality management — These solutions offer workflows that coordinate, manage, and track cross‐departmental
product quality processes. All of this information will be stored in the PLM system, making it the single source of
truth for quality management. This means you can easily improve product quality while you reduce time‐to‐closure.
• Supplier collaboration — Getting your product to your target demographic is the end goal for anyone involved in its
creation. A PLM system may have the functionality to help you find the best supplier for your particular product. You
can approve vendors, manage their audits, and more with the help of a PLM tool.
• Product data management (PDM) — One of the key benefits of a PLM tool is that it keeps track of all your product
data, enabling the organization, management, and analysis of your information. Teams across your organization can
add their own notes about revisions and releases as well. This encourages cross‐departmental collaboration for
product design and manufacturing.

Items and item revisions

Items and item revisions are the fundamental data objects used to manage information in Teamcenter

An item can be thought of as a package that contains all data related to that item.

Items are structures that are generally used to represent a product, part, or
component. Items can contain other data objects including other items and
folders.

Item revisions are data objects used to manage revisions to items.

11

Dataset objects

Datasets are objects that manage files generated from non‐Teamcenter applications, such as, NX, Microsoft Word
and Excel, WordPad, and so forth.

Projects

Projects, also called programs in some industries, are used to represent and control access to data objects
that may be accessible to multiple organizations, such as project groups, development groups, suppliers, and
customers.

Protection and Ownership

Managing object protection and ownership is crucial in a distributed‐computing environment. Because

workspace objects represent actual product information in the database, they must be protected from
unauthorized or accidental access, modification, and deletion

Workflow
A workflow is the automation of business procedures in which documents, information, or tasks
are passed from one participant to another in a way that is governed by rules or procedures.

16
11/4/2023

Workflow consists of
• The automation of the flow of business processes to accomplish a defined objective.
• Documents, information, and tasks passing between participants during the completion of a particular
process.
• Processes that can have any number of tasks arranged in a serial or parallel progression.
• Processes that use defined tasks to automatically notify selected individuals requesting work signoff.

Workflow process
Workflow processes are created based on a process template, which functions as a blueprint of
the workflow process. A specific process is defined by placing workflow and/or change
management tasks in the order they should be performed. Process templates are created using
Workflow Designer.

1. Check in data you want to submit to the workflow. Note Not all workflow definitions require data to be checked in.
2. Initiate the workflow process.
3. Select a signoff team.
4. Perform the reviews and signoffs to complete the workflow.

Product structure

In Structure Manager, you can create, view, and modify a product structure, sometimes called
a bill of materials (BOM).

Precise Vs Imprecise
Precise assembly structures are fixed structures of items
configured with specific item revisions.

Imprecise assembly structures are dynamic structures of items

configured by a revision rule to determine the item revision
included in the structure.
