Trust vs Mistrust: 0 - 1 Year
● Basic Conflict: Trust vs Mistrust
○ Trust: Reliable, consistent, nurturing
■ The World is safe, people are dependable, form trusting
relationships throughout their lives
○ Mistrust: Fails to provide care and affection
■ The World is inconsistent and unpredictable, struggle forming
trusting relationships
● Example: Feeding
○ Understanding hunger cues, to meet basic need

Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt: 1 - 3 Years
● Basic Conflict: Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt
○ Autonomy: Supported during more independence, children will
become confident in the ability to survive
■ Capable of leading their lives, confidence in decision making
○ Shame / Doubt: Overly controlled or criticised, doubt their abilities
■ Lack confidence, fear of trying new things, inadequacy of self
control abilities

Initiative vs Guilt: 3 - 6 Years
● Basic Conflict: Initiative vs Guilt
○ Initiative: Encourage and support students to think, plan & execute

leadership skills
○ Guilt: Discourages the pursuit of independence activities, criticizes
efforts
■ Feelings of guilt, fear of trying something new, self doubt, lack of
initiatives

Industry vs Inferiority: 7 - 11 Years

self esteem, less motivated to tackle challenges in life

● Basic Conflict: Ego Integrity vs Despair
○ Integrity: Lived a fulfilling and meaningful life

achieve life goals

Dear Journal,
Who am I??? I can't seem to figure it out. Some days I love my parents, my friends
and feel I know what I want to do in college. But, just yesterday I changed my mind
AGAIN on my college application checklist. I mean - do I even WANT to go to college?
