Traditional Composers

Given that Spain and then America had


colonized the Philippines from the early
1500s until the late 1800s, it was
unavoidable that Western composing
approaches would make their way into the
works of Filipino composers. Even yet,
Filipino composers of the 20th century
were able to use Western techniques while
retaining certain indigenous
characteristics.
(1883-1952)

01 Francisco Beltran
Buencamino Sr.
Founded the Centro Escolar de Señoritas,
Conservatory of Music,
as well as the Buencamino Music Academy in 1930.

Famous Work: “Mayon Concerto" is considered his


magnum opus. Begun in 1943 and finished in 1948
(1889-1947)

02 Francisco Santiago
Santiago
Known as the Father of Kundiman Art Song.
He belongs to the Triumvirate of Filipino
composer.

Famous Works: Kundiman, (Anak-Dalita)”, the


first Kundiman art song (1917).
(1893-1934)

03 Nicanor Santa Ana


Abelardo
Known for Kundiman songs he wrote before the
Second World War. Also known for his innovative
blend of European romanticism and chromaticism.

Famous Works: Mutya ng Pasig (1926.) and U.P.


Naming Mahal (1917).
(1894-1980)

04 Antonio J. Molina

The first National Artist for Music in the


Philippines, blended Romantic and
impressionist styles.

Famous Works: "Malikmata (Transfiguration)"


(1921) and zarzuela compositions.
(1904-1996)

05 Col. Antonio R.
Buenaventura
Known as a dedicated educator and also a
competent conductor. Founder of several schools
and Director of the UST Conservatory of Music.

Famous Works: The Symphony of C that won him


the Cultural Heritage Award in 1966.

06 Hilarion Francisco
Rubio

Known to be a great composer, music


teacher, conductor, clarinetist, etc.

Famous Works: Ala Juventud Filipina (1934)

07 Dr. Rodolfo S. Cornejo

He served as pianist-director of a USO concert


unit that entertained the Allied Forces at the
E.T.O., the Marianas, and the Hawaiian Islands in
World War II.

Famous Works: Philippine Symphony No. 1 (1939)

08 Felipe Padilla De
Leon, Sr.
Posthumously bestowed the National Artist
for Music Award in 1997 and known for his
popular Christmas carols

Famous Works: Pasko Na Naman and


Payapang Daigdig

09 Lucio Diestro San
Pedro, Sr.
was a Filipino composer and teacher who was
proclaimed a National Artist of the Philippines
for Music in 1991

Famous Works: Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, an iconic


lullaby in the Philippines (1943)

10 Rosendo Ejercito
Santos, Jr.

A composer, music teacher, conductor, and


clarinettist, he created substantial works for
the orchestra.

Famous Works: Bangkawit Piano (1984)

11 Alfredo Santos
Buenaventura
He is among the few composers in the Philippines
who composed five full-length operas. His works have
penetrated territorial, racial and language barriers.

Famous Works: Maria Makiling (1961),

12 Raymundo Cipriano
Pujante Cayabyab
Filipino musician, composer and conductor regarded as
one of the pillars and icons of Original Pilipino Music
(OPM).

Famous Works: Da Coconut Nut, Kumukutikutitap, Leron


Leron Sinta, Miss Kita Kung Christmas
