Anniversary) at a restaurant

STEP 4: Notes

(Use the key points for talking about the event)

 Time: 2015 July

 Location: University in Toronto → visit in Victoria (5-hour plane ride)
 Attendees: parents, brothers, myself, new girlfriend
 Event: restaurant, beach, picnic, home knocked on door
 Experience: fun, exciting, awkward, other plans to cancel

STEP 5: Have first sentence ready

Ex: Back in 2015, I surprised my parents by coming home from university

unannounced. I was studying Engineering at the University in Toronto and
I decided that I would visit my parents in July because I figured they
probably missed as much as I had missed them. Not only that, but I had
also met special someone Julia, and I was excited to introduce her to my
mom and dad. So, I bought a couple of plane tickets and flew from Toronto
back to my hometown of Victoria, about 5-hour plane ride, from east to
west coast Canada. I showed my parents’ doorstep, and boy their jaws
drop when they saw the two of us. Of course, they were completely caught
off guard and very happy to see us and meet Julia. We spent two weeks
with them, hanging out, going to restaurants, and the beach. It was a
really fun time, but in hindsight, it would have been better to inform them
as they had to cancel a trip to visit my grandparents in Vancouver because
of our surprise. After 2 weeks, we flew back to Toronto and I told my
parents to come visit me on the east coast next summer so that I could
show them my school and introduce them to all of my amazing friends.
This was one of the most memorable times when I surprised a person in
recent years.
