CRITERIA OF THE ENGLISH DEBATE COMPETITION

I. The values of the debate:


1. The Power of Persuasion - Student debates teach learners that there is always a data
and contemplative approach to any impasse. Students learn to form a persuasive,
measured argument that can, for some, be useful to future their life issues.
2. The Virtue of Tolerance - On the other hand, a student debate also builds listening
skills. It teaches learners to really listen to opinions that differ from their own and
understand the source of those differences. Even losing an argument lets students
know that they can change their minds on an issue.
II. Competition rules:
1. Each school is presented by one team with 3 members. This is a team competition not
personal.
2. Topics of the debate are some issues in current Indonesian education that help
Indonesian youth to build our nation.
(1) Social media makes more friends.
(2) Is it important to have media social?
(3) Social media makes friendship bonds stronger.
(4) You can find true friends through social media
(5) Social media distances those who are close and approaches those who are far
away.
3. Each team must prepare the pros and cons of all the above topics.
4. Matches will be decided by drawing on the topic and direction of debate, namely pros
or cons.
5. There are two rounds. Firstly, all teams will follow the competition according to the
scheduler which will be set as number 4. Secondly, the final match will take place
with the four highest-point teams. The theme of the final match is :
(1) Is it important to have media social?
(2) Social media makes friendships even closer.
6. The three-highest-point teams from the second rounds will become champions I, II,
and III.
NB: Because the number of contestants is odd, which is 11 contestants, the match will be
held by 10 contestants to take 4 of the four highest-point teams, and the highest score
of the 4th place will compete with the contestant who has not competed, namely
number 11, according to the technical meeting that we have done.

(*) Note:
a. in the rebuttal section, the opposing team has the right to ask a question (interruption),
for up to a maximum of 30 seconds.
