Q1) Who was Ghazni? What was Ghazni’s motive to attack India?
ANS. Sultan Ghazni was the ruler of Afghanistan. He ruled from 997 to 1030 AD, and extended
control over parts of Central Asia, Iran, and the north-western part of the subcontinent.

Motive-

i. He raided the subcontinent almost every year – his targets were wealthy temples,
including that of Somnath, Gujarat.

ii. Much of the wealth Mahmud carried away was used to create a splendid capital city at
Ghazni.
iii. He was also interested in finding out more about the people he conquered and entrusted a
scholar named Al Biruni to write an account of the subcontinent.
Q2) What were the conditions to be fulfilled to become a member of Sabha?
Ans) The following conditions had to be fulfilled to become a member of the Sabha:
1. They should be owners of land from which land revenue is collected.
2. They should have their own homes.
3. They should be between 35 and 70 years of age.
4. They should have knowledge of the Vedas.
5. They should be well-versed in administrative matters and honest.
Q3) Discuss the organization of the Sabha in the Chola Empire.

i. Land grants given to Brahmanas called brahamadeya. These land grants were looked
after by an assembly (Sabha) of prominent Brahmana land holders which worked very
efficiently.
ii. Their decisions were recorded in detail in inscriptions, often on the stone walls of
temples.
iii. The Sabha had separate committees to look after irrigation works, gardens, temples, etc.
iv. The members of the village assembly were elected by lottery system called Kudavolai
System. The names of the eligible persons were written on palm leaves and put into a pot.
A boy was asked to pick up names from the pot. The chosen persons were declared
elected.

in agriculture. Mention any three of them.

i. Area was opened up for large-scale cultivation.
ii. Forests had to be cleared in some regions; land had to be levelled in other areas.
iii. In the delta region, embankments had to be built to prevent flooding and canals had to be
constructed to carry water to the fields.
iv. In many areas, two crops were grown in a year.
