MARTIN HEIDEGGER?
Martin Heidegger, (born September 26, 1889, Messkirch, Schwarzwald,
Germany—died May 26, 1976, Messkirch, West Germany), German
philosopher, counted among the main exponents of existentialism. His
groundbreaking work in ontology (the philosophical study of being, or
existence) and metaphysics determined the course of 20th-century
philosophy on the European continent and exerted an enormous
influence on virtually every other humanistic discipline, including literary
criticism, hermeneutics, psychology, and theology.

Philosophy
ΦΙΛΟΣΟΦΊΑ
The Greek word philosophia
goes back to the word
philosophos. It is presumably
coined by Heraclitus. This Heraclitus (born c. 540 BCE, Ephesus, Anatolia
indicates that for Him [now Selçuk, Turkey]—died c. 480),
philosophia did not yet exist.
“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not

An aner philosophos is not a "philosophical" man. An aner philosophos

is hos philei to sophon, he who loves the sophon;
Philosophy
ΦΙΛΟΣΟΦΊΑ
This correspondence is in accord with the sophon. Accordance is harmonia.
That one being reciprocally unites itself with another, that both are originally
united to each other because they are at each other's disposal- this harmonia
is distinctive feature of philein, "of loving" in the Heraclitean sense.

The aner philosophos, loves the sophon (wisdom).

Etymology of

ΦΙΛΟΣΟΦΊΑ
Perhaps, on Heidegger's path we will never reach a genuine, that is legitimate answer
to the question, "What is philosophy?"

What should be our answer then?

Philosophy
ΦΙΛΟΣΟΦΊΑ
What should be our answer then?
The answer can only be a philosophizing answer.
MAMILOSOPIYA TAYO!
Our goal is not to answer but to
understand what philosophy is.

Angel Jamias Ferriols) | Roque Ferriols, S.J.
has left his mark on several generations of
philosophy students from the Ateneo de
Manila University. Fondly known as "Padre
Roque" to later generations of students,
Ferriols can be credited with almost single-
handedly promoting the teaching of
philosophy in Filipino. More important and
more lasting, however, is his determination
to impart the necessity of pagmumuni-
muni--of genuine thinking on one's
situation, to his students. .

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

TO PHILOSOPHIZE?
"We shall not begin with a definition of
philosophy," says Fr. Ferriols SJ, in his
essay "Insight." Like all activities,
philosophizing is something which is
easier to do than to define."

The
PHILOSOPHICAL ACT
Fr. Ferriols, introduces us to the act of philosophizing by
discussing insight as seeing with the mind and the many
ways of doing something with the insight.

When is an insight philosophical?

PHILOSOPHY AND THE JUST MAN
Manuel Dy, says that philosophizing is also related to justice. Justice
requires philosophy, for if justice means giving to the other what is due to
him, it requires a reflection that is critical, holistic, and committed--which
philosophy is.
