Technology and Concerns
• What are the ethical concerns that arise from the use of
current technologies?
17

@Angela Susan Mathew 17-01-2024 13:31:10

Technology and Concerns
• Biases
▫ AI and algorithm-based technologies can perpetuate and even amplify
biases if they are trained on biased data sets.
▫ There have been cases where:
 facial recognition software has been shown to have higher error rates for
people of color, potentially leading to false accusations
 Amazon noticed that its internally developed recruiting systems was biased
against women. Why do you think this happened?
Example – Bias in Technology in Healthcare
• Biases
▫ Brian Powers, a faculty member in Applied
Artificial Intelligence for Health Care, wrote a
landmark 2019 paper in Science that showed
that algorithms commonly used by some
prominent health systems today are racially
biased
 Health care professionals use this information to
recommend certain people for medical care,
thus this has direct and potentially harmful
implications for patients

Technology and Concerns

• Privacy Invasion
▫ Who has access to personal data?
▫ How is this data used?

24

Technology and Concerns

• Data Breaches
▫ Organizations may not have wrong intentions
▫ Bad actors can obtain illegal access to data that organizations have
collected

26

Technology and Concerns

• Surveillance
▫ Governments and corporations can use technology to monitor individuals,
which can be a tool for control and a threat to freedom
▫ In some countries, there is concern over the use of surveillance
technologies by the state to monitor and suppress dissent.

31

Technology and Concerns

• Manipulation and Fake Content
▫ The rise of deepfakes and AI-generated content can lead to misinformation
and the manipulation of public opinion.
▫ AI-generated deepfakes have been used to create fake videos of public
figures saying or doing things they never actually did, which could
potentially sway public opinion or cause confusion.
