After reading some articles and researching on this topic I found , “The Pradhan
Mantri Ujjwala Yojana” is a revolutionary social welfare scheme launched by
the Indian Government in May 2016. Its primary aim is to provide Liquefied
Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL)
households, to ensure clean cooking fuel, reduce health hazards, and prevent
deforestation.

Objectives
To empower women and protect their health.
To reduce the serious health hazards associated with cooking based on fossil
fuels.
To reduce the number of deaths in India due to unclean cooking fuels.
To prevent young children from significant number of acute respiratory
illnesses caused due to indoor air pollution by burning the fossil fuels.

Achievements as of April 2024

Total connections released under PMUY: 103,251,7371.
Connections released under Ujjwala 2.0: 23,395,1081.
Impact Assessment
The scheme has significantly increased LPG coverage across the country.
There has been a notable improvement in the health of women and children
due to reduced smoke inhalation.

Challenges and Recommendations

Sustained Usage: The average annual refill consumption for PMUY beneficiaries
has remained low, indicating a lack of sustained usage of LPG.
Loan Recovery: Low consumption of refills has hindered loan recovery worth Rs
1,235 crore for the distributors.
Recommendations: Focus on sustained usage of LPG, improve the distribution
network, and ensure connections are released to eligible beneficiaries.

Conclusion
The PMUY has made significant strides in improving the quality of life for
millions of women and their families. While the initial goal of providing
connections has been largely achieved, the focus must now shift to ensuring
that beneficiaries can sustainably use LPG for their cooking needs.

After reading some articles and researching on this topic I found, “Vocal for
Local” is an initiative aimed at promoting local businesses and products,
encouraging consumers to support local entrepreneurs. This movement gained
momentum in India as a response to the economic impact of the COVID-19
pandemic, with the goal of creating a self-reliant nation through grassroots
economic development.

Objectives
To bolster local economies by supporting indigenous products and services.
To foster grassroots entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
To reduce dependency on imports and encourage local production.

Recent Developments
NITI Aayog Launch: On March 13, 2024, NITI Aayog launched the ‘Vocal for
Local’ initiative under its Aspirational Blocks Programme1.
Aakanksha Brand: Indigenous local products from 500 Aspirational Blocks have
been consolidated under the umbrella brand 'Aakanksha’.
Partnerships: Collaborations with Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and Open
Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to support micro enterprises.
Challenges and Opportunities
Challenges: Overcoming the historical inertia of a centralized economy,
addressing corruption, and managing the transition to a decentralized model of
governance.
Opportunities: The current shift offers a chance to redefine the nation’s identity
from a local perspective, opening doors for international trade, especially with
Southeast Asian nations.

Case Studies
Patanjali Ayurved’s Initiative: A study on consumer behavior and changes in
marketing strategies to support the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement.
FMCG Companies: Changes in advertising campaigns by FMCG companies to
boost the Indian economy and support the movement.

Conclusion
The ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative represents a paradigm shift towards empowering
local communities and economies. By nurturing a conducive ecosystem for
local businesses, it aims to usher in a new era of economic empowerment and
self-sufficiency.
