CFM LEAP 1A Engine

Thrust Reverser

1
Thrust Reverser System Layout

 The thrust reverser system is of the aerodynamic

blockage type.
 Each engine:
 Two translating sleeves linked mechanically,
 Ten blocker doors and
 Twenty cascade vanes to redirect fan discharge airflow

 Each Thrust Reverser Actuation System (TRAS) is

pressurized by its dedicated hydraulic power source:
 - Green: Engine 1,
 - Yellow: Engine 2.

4
Thrust Reverser System Layout

 Each system is made of:

 - one Isolation Control Unit (ICU) and a Directional
Control Unit (DCU),
 - two worm drive actuators per side
 On the RH side: one Synchronization Locking Feedback
Actuator (SLFA) and one Synchronization Manual Locking
Actuator (SMLA);
 On the LH side: one SLFA and one Synchronization Non
Locking Actuator (SNLA)),
 - three synchronization flex shafts,
 - locking and monitoring device.

Indicating Components

Thrust Reverser Component
 Thrust Reverser (T/R) actuators: Four Nos.
 - Two Synchronized Locking Feedback Actuators (SLFA)
at 2 and 10 o'clock,
 - one Synchronized Manual Locking Actuator (SMLA)
at 5 o'clock,
 - one Synchronized Non-Locking Actuator (SNLA)
at 7 o'clock.
 A primary lock proximity sensor and a secondary lock
proximity sensor: Installed on each SLFA.
 The Isolation Control Unit (ICU): at 12 o'clock under the
pylon.
 The hydraulic filter assembly: Upstream of the ICU at 12
o'clock.
 The Direction Control Unit (DCU): at 11 o'clock.
8
Purpose

 The four T/R actuators: To deploy the T/R trans cowls.

 The primary and secondary lock proximity sensors
prevent T/R system inadvertent deployment.
 They are the first and second lines of defence.

 The ICU controls the hydraulic pressure input to the

Thrust Reverser Actuation System (TRAS).
 The hydraulic filter assembly filters the hydraulic fluid
coming in from the aircraft supply.
 The DCU controls the hydraulic flow to the T/R
actuators.

T/R - Independent Locking System Components

13
Component Location

 The Electrical Tertiary Lock (ETL) is located on the left

T/R latch beam at 6 o’clock and houses two tertiary lock
proximity sensors.

 The tertiary lock harness is located at the front of the left

T/R cowl half.

14
Purpose

 The ETL prevents T/R system inadvertent deployment.

 It is the third line of defence.

 The tertiary lock proximity sensors provide the ETL

status (locked or unlocked) to both EEC units.

 The tertiary lock harness exchanges electrical signals

between the EEC units and:
 - the ETL,
 - the tertiary lock proximity sensors.

T/R Actuation System

24
T/R Actuation System (AMM)
 The TRAS has eleven major components which are:
 · Synchronized locking feedback actuators
 · Synchronized non-locking actuator
 · Synchronized manual locking actuator
 · Proximity Sensors
 · Manual Drive Units (MDU)
 · Isolation Control Unit (ICU)
 · Directional Control Unit (DCU)
 · Sync shaft and sync tube assemblies
 · Over-the-top flex shaft and flex sync tube assembly
 · Electrical tertiary lock system
 · Electrical Harnesses.

25
SLFA

Each SLFA:

One single channel LVDT:

To EEC A & EEC B
LVDT: Not LRU

Two single-channel proximity

sensors:
1 Prox Sensor: EEC A
1 Prox Sensor: EEC B
Prox Sensors: LRUs

26
SLFA

The primary lock stays locked

without hydraulic power when
the TRAS is in the stowed
position.

The primary lock unlocks when

hydraulic pressure is applied,
which permits the actuators to
move in the deploy direction.

SMLA SNLA

28
SMLA & SNLA: Not Monitored by EECs
Isolation Control Unit (ICU)

 ICU: Isolation Control Valve:

 Solenoid Controlled (1 No.)

 1) Solenoid Energized:
 ICV Open: TRAS Pressurised.

 2) Solenoid De-energized:
 ICV Close: TRAS Depressurised.

29
Isolation Control Unit (ICU)

 A Deactivation Lever:
 To Activate/ Deactivate T/R.

 A Pressure Switch: Dual Channel

 T/R pressurized/ not pressurized
signal to EEC A & B.

 A Limit Switch: Dual Channel

 T/R Inhibited/ Active signal to
EEC A & B.

30
Directional Control Unit (DCU)
DCU: Directional Valve:
A Solenoid
1) Solenoid Energized:
Directional Valve: Open:
Hydraulic pressure from ICU is
directed to the Deploy side of
Actuators.
2) Solenoid De-energized:
Directional Valve: Close:
Hydraulic pressure from ICU is
directed to the Stow side of
Actuators.

T/R Actuators & Flex Shafts

32
MDU for Maintenance
 An MDU is installed on each of the two lower actuators.
 The MDUs are used only for ground maintenance.

 One MDU is sufficient to deploy and stow the cowl

without a hydraulic or an electric power source.

 The ICU must be in the deactivated position and the

synchronized locking feedback actuators and the tertiary
lock system must be unlocked before the MDU is used.
 Maintenance personnel apply torque to the MDU with a
wrench to manually move the trans-cowl.
