1.1 Introduction
Information in this section consists of product description, design features and specifications for the AA39
Series of Dynarnic Headset Adapters.
The descriptions given are for the AA39-187, and are identical to those for other rnodels unless otherwise
noted. All derivative product information shall be contained in the applicable manual supplement, which
may be obtained frorn AEM as required.
The AA39-187 is a single military headset adapter, consisting of a 5 R dynamic rnic to civil aviation 150 R rnic
adapter, with an 8 R to 600 R transformer for phones matching.
The AA39-287 operation is identical to the 141438-187, but is designed for two headsets.
The AA39-087 is used to adapt 5 R dynamic M-87 rnilitary rnics to general aviation 150 R audio systerns.
The AA39-075 is used to adapt 75 R dynamic military rnics (i.e. ELNO) to general aviation 150 R audio
systerns.
The AA39-075, AA39-087, AA39-187 and AA39-287 are srnall, rernote mounted rnetal units with D-sub
connectors. The units are designed to operate frorn standard rnic bias, supplied by the aircraft radio and
intercom systern.

Unit Nomenclature
2.1 Introduction
Information in this section consists of unpacking and inspection procedures, installation procedures, post-
installation checks and installation drawings for the AA39 Series Headset Adapter.
Unpack the equipment carefully. lnspect the unit visually for damage due to shipping and report al1 such
claims irnrnediately to the carrier involved. Note that each unit should have the following:
2.2.1 Warranty
All Anodyne Electronics Manufacturing Corp. (AEM) products are warranted for 2 years. See the website
www.aern-corp.corn/warranty for cornplete details.
Maintenance of the AA39 Series Headset Adapter is 'on condition' only. Periodic maintenance of this
product is not required.
2.4.1 Warnings
WARNING:
High volume settings can cause hearing damage.
Set the headset volume control to the minimum volume setting prior to
conducting tests, and slowly increase the headset volume to a
comfortable listening level.
2.4.2 Cautions
CAUTION:
In al1 installations, use shielded cable exactly as shown, and ground as indicated.
Signifiant problems may result from not following these guidelines.
Do not bundle any lines from this unit with transmitter coax lines. Do not
bundle any audio or DC power lines from this unit with 400 Hz synchro wiring
or AC power lines. Do not position this unit or wiring from this unit next to any
device with a strong alternating magnetic field such as an inverter, or
All wire shall be selected in accordance with the original aircraft manufacturer's Maintenance Instructions
or AC43.13-1B Change 1, Paragraphs 11-76 through 11-78. Unshielded wire types shall qualify to
MIL-W-22759 as specified in AC43.13-1 B Change 1, Paragraphs 11-85, 11-86, and listed in Table 11-11.
For shielded wire applications, use Tefzel MIL-C-27500 shielded wire with solder sleeves (for shield
terminations) to make the most compact and easily terminated interconnect. Follow the connector map in
Section 2.7 as required.
Allow 3" from the end of the shielded wiring to the shield termination to allow the connector hood to be
easily installed. Reference the interconnect drawing in Section 2.7 for shield termination details. Note that
the hood is a "clamshell" hood, and is installed after the wiring is complete. Aircraft harnessing shall
permit the unit to be lowered from the panel for easy access to al1 side adjustments. Do NOT mount the
unit until al1 adjustments have been performed.
Maintain wire segregation and route wiring in accordance with the original aircraft manufacturers
Maintenance Instructions.
Unless otherwise noted, al1 wiring shall be a minimum of 24 AWG, except power and ground lines, which
shall be a minimum of 22 AWG. Reference the lnterconnect drawing for additional specifications. Check
that the ground connection is clean and well secured, and that it shares no path with any electrically noisy
aircraft accessories such as blowers, turn and bank instruments or similar loads. Power to this unit must
be supplied from a separate circuit breaker or fuse (fast blow), and not attached to any other circuit
breaker without additional protection. Verify that the selected circuit breaker size and wire gauge are
adequate for the installation using the techniques specified in AC43.13-1 B Change 1, Paragraphs 11-47
through 11-51 and 11-66 through 11-69.
In al1 installations that use Dynamic microphones, extreme care must be taken with the shielding and
routing of the microphone wiring. This is especially true of the 5-ohm Dynamic rnic input, where typical
signals are in the range of 100-250 pVrms. Special wire with Mumetal shielding should be considered if
there are any concerns about installation-related noise. Do not bundle the microphone wiring with high-
level lines (headphone, radio audio, coaxial cables, etc.).
Headset andlor helmet wiring may also need to be reviewed if using Dynamic microphones. Many of the
headsets and helmets on the market have minimal shielding for the wiring associated with the rnic and
phone circuits. Those with shielded wiring often use the Phone Lo connection for the shield ground. In
the AA39, the Phone Lo connection is not ground referenced, so the shielding has no effect. This will
result in substantial coupling of the Phone signal ont0 the Microphone wires, leading to high levels of
crosstalk in the intercom system. These shielding considerations also apply to in-line PTT cordsets. If a
review of the headset wiring indicates there will be a problem with the shield termination, it is acceptable
to ground the Phone Lo connection to a local ground at the headset jacklconnector.
Do not attach the AA39 until the following conditions are met.
Power up the aircraft's systems and confirm normal operation of al1 functions of the AA39.
Upon satisfactory completion of al1 performance checks, make al1 required log book entries, electrical
load, weight and balance amendments and other documentation as required by your local regulatory
agency before releasing the aircraft for service.
The AA39-075 and AA39-087 have a MIC LEVEL adjustment trimpot, accessible through a hole in the
rear of the unit. Rotating the trimpot cw will increase the rnic level, and ccw will decrease it.
There are no adjustments for the AA39-187 or AA39-287.

Information in this section consists of the functional and operational procedures for the AA39 Series
Headset Adapter.
The AA39-187 is a single military headset adapter, consisting of a 5 R dynarnic rnilitary rnic to general
aviation 150 R amplified dynarnic rnic adaptor, with an 8 R to 600 R transformer for phones rnatching.
The AA39-287 operation is identical to the AA38-187, but is designed for two headsets.
