Chinese Peking Opera


 Peking Opera – was considered as the highest form of arts in China wherein,
speech, singing, mime, and acrobats are performed to an instrumental
accompaniment.
The instruments are divided into two:
1. Wenchang (civil division) – which is mainly there to accompany singing
featuring the stringed instrument.
2. Wuchang (military division) whose music is to accompany acting, dancing,
and fighting featuring the percussion instrument.
Basically, music accompaniment is used to describe specific story or idea of the play. But
the music played by the Peking opera is not created by a composer.
It is based on sets of traditional calcified tunes with the singing two sets of tunes;
1. Xipi – is the tunes used to express an excited mood such as anger, happiness, and
agitation.
2. Erhuang – is the tunes used to express a subdued mood and deep thoughts such as
loss, sorrow, or melancholy.

 The stories of Peking Opera come from the history of China that includes tales
from dynasties, historical events, and stories about emperors, ministers and
beautiful women.

These are the 5 popular stories of the Chinese Peking Opera

 Farewell my concubine - The story is about Changyou who battled for the
unification of China against Yubang. In the play Changyou was surround by
Yubang’s forces and was about to be defeated. He calls for his force and pleads to
run away but his force refuses so he then calls his favorite concubine to fight with
him but begs to die with him realizing their situation.
 Drunken Beauty - The extraordinarily beautiful Young Yuan was the favorite
concubine who had arranged to meet emperor Ming. However, the emperor locks
her bell and instead went to another princess. The situation made her upset and
starts to drink alone and saddened
 The Heavenly Maid Scatters Blossoms – this play is also known as Stairy Maiden
Scatters flowers who was ordered by the Buddha to scatter blossoms in Demana
Cartei near Desasuru to test his faith. The heavenly maid scatters the blossoms in
front of him and proclaims the Buddha’s words before she returns to the west.
 Lady Wang Zhaojun Goes Beyond the Frontier – the story is about Wang
Zhaojun in the dysnasty who endowed with both beauty and intelligence who did
not pay bronze to the painter of the palace that is why his portrait was painted
badly. She was never visited by the emperor because of that until one day Wang
Zhaojun was playing sorrowed melodies on pipa a Chinese stringed instrument, to
display her lonely emotion. The music attracted thee emperor and her beauty were
revealed.
 Lady Mu Guiying Tales Command – this opera is generally built as (lady) Mu
Guiying takes command of the troops and watch the mass play of male and Fang.
When the lord of West Zha starts a rebellion the fifty-year-old female general Mui
Guiying takes command of the troops and puts aside her personal hurt despite the
family having been treated unfaithfully. Still, she returns to the battlefield with her
husband and her children.

Abstraction: The teacher will deepen the understanding of the learners towards the topic through

information that have not been highlighted during the discussion, the teacher will
also entertain some questions or points that the learners have difficulty
understanding. This part of the lesson is crucial since the learners will be able to
