The Major Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on
the production of major non-food and industrial crops, namely, abaca, coconut,
coffee, rubber, sugarcane, tobacco, and cacao. These crops are highlighted in the
report on the Value of Production in Philippine Agriculture and Fisheries that the
Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) releases quarterly.
This 2022 Fourth Quarter issue of the Bulletin presents the final estimates of
production from July to September 2022 and the preliminary estimates from
October to December 2022. It also contains the preliminary estimates of area
planted for permanent crops, area harvested for temporary crops, and the number
of bearing trees for the period July to December 2022.
Generally, data in this report are the results of the Crops Production Survey (CrPS)
which is conducted quarterly by the PSA. However, the data on canes milled were
sourced entirely from the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).

BACKGROUND1
The Crops Production Survey (CrPS) is the source of production data of all crops,
except palay and corn. Around 280 crops are covered in this survey. For this
bulletin, information on seven major non-food and industrial crops, namely, abaca,
coconut, coffee, rubber, sugarcane, tobacco, and cacao are reported.
Sampling Methodology
The selection of sample farms in the province is done by categorizing small and
large farms. For large farms, a maximum of five farms are chosen for the whole
province. For small farms, the top five producing cities/municipalities of a certain
crop are chosen from each province. From each of these cities/municipalities, five
sample farmer-producers are selected as respondents. In this two-stage design,
city/municipality serves as the primary sampling unit, while farmer-producer is the
secondary sampling unit.
Data Collection
For CrPS, data collection is conducted quarterly during the last 10 days of the
middle month of the quarter, that is, in February, May, August, and November.
It gathers data on production, area planted/harvested, and number of bearing
trees/hills.

Concepts and Definitions
Crop production refers to the quantity produced and harvested for a particular
crop during the reference period. It includes those measured but damaged, stolen,
given away, consumed, given as harvester’s share, and reserved. Excluded are
those produced but not harvested for whatever reason/s.
Area planted refers to the actual physical area planted measured in hectares. This
generally applies to area reported for permanent crops and multi-harvest
temporary crops.
Area harvested refers to the actual area from which harvests were realized
expressed in hectares. This excludes crop area which was totally damaged. It
may be smaller than the area planted. In crops statistics, this applies to mono-
harvest temporary crops.
Bearing trees refer to trees where harvesting has been made in the past and may
or may not have borne fruits (productive) during the reference period due to cyclical
production pattern of the crop.

Coffee
During the period of October to December 2022, production of coffee (green coffee
beans) improved at 15.30 thousand metric tons or by 2.3 percent from its
14.95 thousand metric tons output in the same quarter of 2021. (Table 1)
Among the four types of coffee, Robusta was the most produced which accounted
for 74.9 percent of the total coffee production during the period. (Figure 6 and
Table 1)
SOCCSKSARGEN was the highest coffee producer with 6.00 thousand metric
tons or 39.0 percent of the total production for this quarter. Bangsamoro
Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and Davao Region came next with
respective contributions of 22.0 percent and 16.7 percent shares. (Figure 7 and
Table 4)
The area planted for all varieties of coffee from July to December 2022 was
reduced to 111.65 thousand hectares, recording a decline of -0.4 percent from the
112.12 thousand hectares of area planted in the same period of last year. Robusta
type had the highest area planted with 86.26 thousand hectares. (Table 9)
