Urban Sociology
The definition of an urban society is controversial, that is, it doesn’t enjoy the
benefit of a definite and precise definition. Over the years, there have been an
unbated debate between scholars as to the definition of urban society. For the
purpose of this assignment, I will be highlighting the definition of an urban
society according to different scholars.
Ernest Burgess defined urban society as "a complex system of interdependent social
structures and subcultures, unified by a common interest in maintaining the urban
environment".
Talcott Parsons was of the opinion that an urban society is "a social system
characterized by a high degree of interdependence, functional differentiation, and
the presence of a large number of organizations".
Finally, Jean Gottmann defined urban society as "a society which has become a world
in itself, where all human activities are taking place in an urban context".
2. Population Control
Key stakeholders in urban areas must provide campaigns and counseling for effective
medical health clinics and family planning to help reduce the high rates of
population growth. Medical health clinics oriented towards family planning options
must be made accessible across the entire urban area with the objective of
controlling diseases and population growth.
