CALA DRAFT 1

LEARNING AREA : AGRICULTURE

LEVEL : FORM 3

SYLLABUS TOPIC : SOIL & WATER (Syllabus Page 43)

SUB – TOPIC : SOIL FERTILITY (Syllabus Page 47)

CALA TITLE : POSSIBLE SOIL PROBLEMS THAT CAN CAUSE

LOW YIELDS

COMPETENCES/SKILLS - Problem solving

- Critical thinking
- Research skills
- Communication skills
- Decision making

BACKGROUND

The school has always produced good yields in the school garden. But recently yields have
gone down even though the inputs used have remained constant.

The Activity

This CALA consists of two separate parts – Part A and B. You need to complete both parts.

Part A
 Investigate possible causes of reduction in yields with specific reference to the soil.
 During your investigation
- Collect soil samples
- Conduct the necessary soil tests

Part B
 Use the information you have gathered in Part A to:
- Indicate the aim
- Outline the methods used
- List the apparatus used
- Write up a conclusion of your findings
 Compile a report between 150 – 200 words taking the following into considerations:
- Possible causes of low yields
- Procedure used
- Observations made
- Interpretation of results
- Recommendations made

How you will be assessed

The facilitator will assess your ability to

- collect soil samples,
- use correct apparatus
- interpret results
- make informed recommendations

CALA Tip

- As you collect soil samples remember to produce a representative composite sample

CALA CONTEXT

The school has always produced good crop yields in the school garden. But recently, yields have gone down even though the inputs used have
remained constant.
CALA DESCRIPTION

To investigate the possible causes of yield reduction with reference to soil aspects.
 Select/collect the relevant tools and apparatus [2 marks]
 Ability to use tools and apparatus [3 marks]
 Collect sub samples of the soil and prepare a composite sample [15 marks]
 Conduct the necessary soil tests in the laboratory taking note of your observations [15 marks]
 Interpret results obtained [8 marks]
 From the results obtained compile a report between 150-200 words covering
- procedure used
- observations made
- interpretation of results
- recommendations made [6 marks]
 Report submission [1 mark]

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

 The CALA will be assessed out of 50 marks.

 The facilitator will award marks for:
- Collection and use of apparatus
- Soil sampling procedure
- Soil testing method
- Observations made
- Interpretation of results
- Recommendations made
- Producing a comprehensive report
 You can see how marks will be allocated in this CALA by looking at the ‘Achievement Standards’ provided
