Setting: The kitchen of a very modest, small Filipino home at dawn. The space is
sparse and basic, with a single lightbulb hanging overhead. There’s a wooden table,
four mismatched chairs, and a makeshift kitchen area that includes an old, worn-out
portable gas stove. A few basic utensils hang from nails on the wall. The atmosphere
is filled with the humble resilience of a struggling family.
At Rise: ROSA, a woman in her late 30s with a weary but determined expression, is
lighting the portable gas stove. She is frying small fish (BULAD) and boiling rice in
an old pot. The kitchen lacks modern amenities, and the furnishings are visibly worn.
ROSA: (Humming, a hint of weariness in her voice). (She plates the rice and fish on
two old but clean plates. She glances through a small curtain-less window, sighs
deeply, and then smiles as she calls out.
ROSA: Mga anak! mamahaw na!. (There’s a brief pause. She continues louder, with
a playful tone.) Jack, Rose, pag dali mo kay ma late jud mo ron!
(Her son, Jack, rush in. Dressed in well-worn school uniforms that have been
patched up. His shoes are frayed but clean. He sit at the table eagerly but
respectfully.)
ROSA: Oh, asa naman tong imo manghud? (Speaking to jack with both arms on her
hips)
ROSE: (Enters the kitchen enthusiasm) Maayong buntag ma! (Proceeds to “amin”
and then sits down).
ROSA: (ROSA turned around and calls out OSCAR) Ga! Ali na, mamahaw na ta!
(ROSA watches them eat for a moment, her face a mixture of motherly affection and
concealed concern. OSCAR, her husband, enters, his clothes soiled from an early
start at a labor job. He washes his hands in a small basin by the door and joins the
family.)
Continuing from the initial setting, here’s how you could expand the scene with the
new details and characters:
ROSE: (poking at her fish) Ah bulad napud? Sge nalang tag bulad.
OSCAR: (patting her hand gently) Pasensya kaayo nak. Mao raman guy makaya
nato. Mo sulay ko overtime karong gabie, basin maka palit tag laming sud an, okay?
JACK: (trying to lighten the mood) Kalami anang bulad! Makagwapo na!
ROSA: (smiling at JACK) Oh kaon daghan aron mo samot kag kagwapo
(The children hurriedly eat their breakfast, while OSCAR watches them with a
mixture of pride and concern. He takes a small portion for himself and begins eating
quietly)
(The children finish their meal and get up from the table. ROSE grabs her old
backpack, and JACK follows her lead.)
(ROSE and JACK exit. The sound of the door closing echoes slightly. The stage dims
around ROSA and OSCAR, focusing on them as they begin a more serious
conversation.)
OSCAR: (voice low, troubled) Ga, naa koy ganahan e storya nimo ba.
OSCAR: Ang akong giutangan, nag sige nag panghulga naku. Niingon sila, ug dile
ta kabayad, naay dile maayog mahitabo, Ga.
ROSA: (gasps, then steadies herself, reaching out to hold his hand) Hala ga, unsaon
man natu na?
ROSA: Sige ga, Mangita pud ko trabaho dires silingan, manglabada ko. Kayanun nato ni, paras
atong mga anak.
OSCAR: (nods, squeezing her hand back) Oo ga, kayanun natu ni.
(Background music: Sad but also shows the strength of their bond.
ACT 1 SCENE 2
Setting: A bustling street in the evening, vendors lined up along the sidewalk selling
various street foods. A small, simple fried chicken stall stands prominently where
YAYA PASING, an older woman with a friendly demeanor, serves customers. Street
lamps cast a warm but dim light over the area.
At Rise: OSCAR is seen walking towards the chicken stall, his expression a mix of
fatigue and relief as he nears the familiar place.
(Background music: Sounds of a busy street with vendors calling out, people chatting,
and occasional motorbikes passing by.)
OSCAR: (approaching the stall) Maayong gabie, Yaya Passing! Papalita kog manok
ya.
YAYA PASING: (recognizing him with a bright smile) Uy Oscar! Ikaw man diay
na. Kumusta naman ka?
YAYA PASING: (nods understandingly as she packs the chicken) Kugihan jud
ka Oscar. Daara oh, pakapin paras imo mga anak.
OSCAR: (smiles gratefully) Hala, daghang salamat kaayo ya, malipay gyud tung
akong mga anak.
(As OSCAR pays and starts to walk away with his food, a MAN in a mask step out of
the shadows, directly in his path. The ambiance shifts, the background noise fading
into tense silence.)
MASKED MAN: Bayad na! ayawg hulata nga mangisog ko daghan ng higayon na
akong gihatag sa imoha.
(Background music: A stark, dramatic tune underscores the urgency and shock of the
moment.) (JACK enters from stage right, his face confused and concerned as he nears
the crowd gathering.)
JACK: (pushing through the crowd, then seeing OSCAR) Pa! Unsay nahitabo?
BYSTANDER: (on her phone, frantic) Yes sir, kinahanglan mi ug tabang dire
pagdali, please!
(As JACK kneels beside his father, the lights dim around them, focusing on their
figures in a tight spotlight, the background fading out. The sound of an approaching
ambulance and police is heard as the scene closes.)
ACT 2 SCENE 1
Setting: A small, simple living room in a modest house. The room has a table wth a
picture of OSCAR, garlanded with white flowers, placed prominently.
At Rise: ROSA enters slowly with ROSE and JACK, each looking somber and
exhausted. ALING THERESA follows behind, her expression one of concern.
(Background music: A slow, mournful tune plays, reflecting the family's grief.)
ALING THERESA: (placing a hand on ROSA’s shoulder) Mads, wala nakay kaon-
kaon, kinahanglan kag kusog paras imong mga anak.
JACK: (bitterly, his voice barely controlled) Wala na gani tay amahan, mura napud
tag nawad an ug inahan
ALING THERESA: (gently, trying to console them) Kabalo ko nga lisud, pero
kinahanglan ninyo ang usag usa ron.
(JACK storms off stage left, frustrated and angry, leaving ROSA staring after him,
lost and helpless. ROSE sits, crying softly, as ALING THERESA comforts her.)
ACT 2 SCENE 2

There’s a small stage for karaoke, unused, and a bar counter where a BARTENDER

At Rise: ROSA is seen sitting at the bar, a glass of liquor in her hand. She looks
disheveled and more worn than before.
ROSA: (muttering to herself, slightly slurred) Usa na lang, para ra makalimots tanang
problema.
(JACK enters, his face drawn and tired. He stops, seeing his mother, a mix of anger
and desperation in his eyes)
JACK: (raising his voice) Ma, sakto na be!
ROSA: (turning to face him, voice raising) Wala na inyo amahan, unsa may ganahan
ninyo nako buhaton?
(ROSA looks at him, then back at her drink, the internal struggle evident on her face.)

ROSA buries her face in her hands, sobbing quietly. The BARTENDER looks on,
sadly shaking his head.)

(Background music: A playful, yet slightly offbeat tune plays, hinting at the
forthcoming trouble.)

JACK: (hesitant but approaches the table) Uy, Jose. Nagunsa mo?
JOSE: (slapping Jack on the back as he sits down) Inom inom ragud, shot sa.
JOSE: (leaning closer, lowering his voice) Mura man kag naagian ug bagyo pre. Naa

JOSE: (pulling a small packet from his pocket and showing it discreetly)
Mawala imo problema ani. Salig nako.
Setting: The same modest living room from previous scenes. The room is tidier.
ROSA is seen sitting, looking healthier and more composed.
At Rise: JACK enters abruptly, his movements erratic and his eyes wild.
(Background music: A tense, unsettling score underpins the scene, reflecting the
chaos erupting.)

forth.)
JACK: (frustrated, pulling out a knife suddenly, his hands shaking) Nganung in ani
paman? Nganung dile ma normal ang tanan?
(JACK's mood shifts once more, this time to one of intense sadness. Seats down and
curls.)

At Rise: ROSA, ROSE, and JACK sit nervously in the waiting area. ALING
THERESA is beside them, offering quiet reassurance.

ROSA and ROSE providing additional context and support. DR. SARAH listens
attentively, asking insightful questions.)
DR. SARAH: (after a thorough assessment) Jack base sa akoang mga datas nga
nakuha, naa kay bipolar 1 disorder. Complicated siya nga condition, pero naay mga
treatments para ma manage nato ni.
(She explains the role of past events and substance abuse in exacerbating Jack’s
symptoms, as well as the importance of a comprehensive treatment plan.)

smile on his face as he takes another step towards recovery.)
Setting: The same modest kitchen from the first scene, but with a renewed sense of
warmth and stability. The morning sunlight streams in through the window, casting a
gentle glow over the room.
At Rise: JACK and ROSE enter the kitchen, their backpacks slung over their
shoulders. They exchange smiles with ROSA, who is bustling around the kitchen,
