Neurodegenerative Diseases and SLT
Neurodegenerative disorders are chronic conditions that damage and destroy parts of your nervous system
over time, especially your brain. In other words, neurodegenerative diseases occur as a result of the death or
deterioration of the functions of neurons. Damage to nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord affects important
functions such as movement, thinking, speaking, and swallowing. Neurodegenerative diseases are permanent,
but many are now treatable thanks to improvements in medical treatments. Currently, the main goal is to
treat the symptoms and slow the progress of these conditions when possible.

Neurodegenerative disorders include Alzheimer's disease, ataxia, Huntingon's disease, Parkinson's disease,
motor neuron disease, multiple system atrophy, and progressive supranuclear palsy. The most common
neurodegenerative diseases, are Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's. First of all, Alzheimer's is the
most common form of dementia. Memory loss, loss of cognitive abilities, function in language areas (aphasia),
and function in movements requiring skill (apraxia) are observed. It may occur due to age, gender, genetic
factors, head injuries, vascular diseases, infections, and environmental factors. Another important disease is
Parkinson's. Parkinson's disease affects both motor and non-motor systems. Tremor, rigidity (contraction),
slowness of movement, difficulty walking, sleep difficulties, dysphagia (swallowing disorders), and postural
instability (standing posture disorder) are some of the symptoms. In addition, an increase in speaking speed or
speaking in a low tone of voice, a decrease in facial expressions while speaking, and difficulty in speaking
monotony are among Parkinson's symptoms. The last of the important diseases is Huntington's. Huntington's
disease occurs as a result of the breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. There is no possibility of transmission
to another individual except through genetic pathways. In this disease, muscle problems, abnormal or slow
eye movements, posture, balance, gait disturbances, and difficulty swallowing or speaking may occur.
Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) plays a significant role in many of the additions, but it is not always in the spotlight.
Speech and language therapists apply personalized therapy methods to each patient with speech and swallowing
disorders. Swallowing therapy includes methods such as strong swallowing exercises, expiratory muscle strengthening
training, and changing the consistency of food. Speech interventions include vocal hygiene, traditional speech therapy, and
Lee Silverman Voice Therapy, which prevents monotonous robotic speech. With these methods, the patient's quality of life
increased.Therapy provides strategies to help patients maintain or improve their communication skills and cope with
language and speech difficulties.
