Rizal's Annotation
Jose Rizal annotated this book because he
was eager to understand Philippine historybefore it was conquered by the Spaniards.
His annotation was published on 1958. It
was the first document about the Philippines
that was written by a Filipino.
He was in London when he finished the
annotation. His close friend, Blumentritt was
the one who recommended Morga's book
which is the perfect material to understand
the state of the Philippines.
According to him:
1. The book is objective (not opinionated).
2. It is civil — unbiased. Hindi siya hinaluan
ng kung ano ano. Sinulat lang niya kung
ano ang nangyari.
3. It is trustworthy.
4. It is sympathetic. He understand the
situation of the Pre-hispanic filipinos.
He theorized that:
1. The Philippines was economically self-
sufficient.
2. The conquest caused the deterioration ofthe Philippine culture and tradition. Kung
hindi daw dumating ang mga kastilyo, ay
malamang buhay na buhay ang kultura at
~ tradisyonngbansa.

Preface
A preface is a message from the author or
the introductory remarks.
Blumentritt wrote the preface of Rizal's
annotation before it was published. He had a
couple of comments, namely:
1. That rizal was judgemental about the
past which is incorrect when
annotating.
2. Rizal should not condemn the Catholic
even though they did not do anything.
Purposes of Rizal
1. To awaken the consciousness of the6%
not superior to its past
Filipinos.
. To correct what has been distributed
about the Philippines.
. To prove that the Filipinos were civilized/
advanced.
. To prove that the Philippines had a
culture on its own.
. To prove that the Filipinos were
demoralized, exploited, and ruined by the
Spanish government.
