SAFETY

PROCEDURE FOR
LABORATORY
Scope
There are some rules which must be observed for the successful completion of the
laboratory exercise, safety and convenience of others working in the laboratory.

Precautions to be followed inside of the laboratory.


1. Always ensure your workplace is tidy and clean before starting work and ensure there
is adequate space for your work.
2. Never carry out non-routine work until you have consulted with and obtained the
approval of a Laboratory supervisor.
3. Never work alone in a laboratory if it can be avoided. If required call a watchman.
4. Staff must maintain high personal hygiene standards. Hand washing is of particular
importance, but organic solvents should not be used for hand cleaning.
5. Spillage must be cleared up immediately. Corrosive or toxic chemicals need careful
handling and no risk either in removal or disposal must be taken.
6. Food, Water, personal lockers, and cloths are not allowed inside of the laboratory.
7. Smoking is not permitted inside of the laboratory.
8. Damaged glassware must never be used.
9. Pipetting by mouth is not allowed.
10. Labels and chemicals must be carefully checked to ensure the correct chemicals is
being employed.
11. Strong acid and alkali must not be stored together(to follow golden rules for chemical
storage): large amount of chemical should not be stored inside of the laboratory.
12. Do not store bottles near a source of heat. (Hot air oven, Mufle France etc...,)
13. Goggles must be worn all the time.
14. Bottles and other containers must be properly labeled as to their correct contents.
Solutions must Never Be stored unlabelled.
15. Solvents must always be handled with care. Only minimum quantities required for
immediate use should be kept in the open laboratory. Thermisé, It soul Be store at

16. Solvents should not be stored near to Muffle furnace.
17. Laboratory coats must be worn and fastened all the time. It is each person’s
responsibility to ensure regular laundering and to request replacement of damaged or
worn coats.
18. Safety shoes must always be worn.
19. Authorized person only allowed, Unauthorized staff must never repair, modify, or
maintain the laboratory equipment which involves work with the electrical system of
the equipment.
20. While leaving the laboratory, all electrical equipments except some required
equipments (incubator, Air conditioner etc..,) must be switched off.
21. Windows, doors, floors, slabs, and walls should be regularly cleaned.
22. Precautionary notices and warning symbols should be clearly displayed, preferably at
head height. First aid boxes, eyewash bottles and firefighting equipment should be
provided and clearly displayed.
23. Separate waste bins for disposal of glass and non-glass should be provided and clearly
marked ‘Glass only’ and ‘non-glass’ or similar.
24. Noise should be limited inside of the laboratory. Don’t make the noise and noisy
equipment ex. Pump and compressors should be sited on rubber mats to reduce the
vibration.
25. Fire extinguishers and fire blankets must be conveniently sited and exists in acceptable
quantity. They should be clearly marked and color coded where possible.
26. A strident warning siren or buzzer should be sited to be easily heard in the laboratory.
27. Never enter the Face inside the air fume hood
28. Never stored the Flammable chemicals inside the Refrigerator.
29. Never smell, intentionally, inhale or taste a chemical.
