1. Purpose / Scope

1.1 Define the use of Personal Protective Equipment as a means of reducing injury due to
occupational hazards.

1.2 Ensure compliance with OSHA's Personal Protective Equipment regulation 29 CFR
1910.132.140.

1.3 This policy covers all BorgWarner Seneca Plant associates; all associates working in Battery
areas at BorgWarner-Seneca Wells Highway Plant, Borg Road warehouse and Shiloh Road
warehouse; all contractors, visitors, vendors and customers to the plant who enter the Battery
areas.

2 Responsibility

2.1 The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager will ensure that a hazard assessment of
BorgWarner-Seneca Operations is conducted, that documentation of the hazard assessment
survey is maintained and will re-evaluate the hazard assessment survey as necessary.

2.2 The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager, in conjunction with the Department Leaders,
will ensure all associates are aware of the proper Personal Protective Equipment for the facility.

2.3 The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager will maintain documentation that associates
have received training on Personal Protective Equipment.

2.4 Department Leaders will ensure that each associate is properly trained in the appropriate
Personal Protective Equipment that is relative to the associates completing their jobs in a safe
manner.

2.5 Department Leaders will ensure associates have access to appropriate Personal Protective
Equipment.

2.6 Department Leaders will ensure that associates comply with the provisions set forth in the
Personal Protective Equipment Policy.

2.7 The Associate is responsible for acquiring, inspecting, using, and cleaning Personal Protective
Equipment in accordance with the Personal Protective Equipment Policy and manufacturer’s
instructions.

3 Definitions

3.1 Battery Personal Protective Equipment (B. P.P.E): Battery Personal Protective Equipment
specific to Battery areas. Minimum requirements are as follows: Safety glasses, Safety
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Safety Shoes (or ESD strap on safety shoes), Electrically rated
PPE specifically for maintenance personnel, gloves for handling metal parts, electrical safety
gloves, ESD Smocks, cut resistant, rubber gloves, leather gloves, wrist straps, 40 cal suits for
rework, and thermal gloves for damaged cells.

3.2 Battery Areas: All areas designated for Batteries at Wells Road, Borg Rd and Shilo that are
designed for and include production, movement, and storage of units and operation or
maintenance of machinery and equipment specific to batteries. Such areas within the Seneca
facility include (but are not limited to) Assembly (Battery areas: Dept 140_____; Maintenance,
shipping & receiving docks, and storage areas at all 3 facilities.

4 Procedure

4.1 Training: PPE training will include the following:

4.1.5 Proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of PPE

4.2 Assessing Need; The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager, in conjunction with the Job
Safety Analysis (JSA) Team, will conduct an annual walk-through survey of the Seneca facility
battery areas. After the assessment is complete, all hazards identified will be considered and
necessary modifications to the Personal Protective Equipment Policy will be made. Basic hazard
categories to be considered are:

4.3 Based on the most recent assessment of the facility the Personal Protective Equipment required
throughout the Plant is as follows:

4.3.1 ANSI Approved Safety Glasses WITH Side Shields and No Tint; All associates, visitors,
vendors, and contractors must wear approved safety glasses with side shields within Battery
areas.

4.3.1.1 Vendors, guests, and others entering the Battery areas of the plant are required to
wear approved safety glasses with side shields. It is the responsibility of the BorgWarner
host to see that the vendor or guest has, and wears approved safety glasses.

4.3.2 Safety Shoes:

4.3.2.1 All associates, visitors, vendors and contractors must wear ESD safety shoes when
in Battery areas or ESD straps on approved Safety Shoes.

4.3.2.2 Safety shoes are to meet all the following standards:

4.3.2.2.1 Compression and Impact Compression Standard - Shoes must have been
tested for toe compression in accordance with ASTM F2413-11, I/75 C/75.

4.3.2.2.2 Slip Resistance - Shoes must meet the ASTM F1677 Slip Resistance Testing
Standard.

4.3.2.2.3 Oil Resistance - Shoes should be oil resistant, by components and in


construction.

4.3.2.2.4 Electrical Hazard Resistance - For those individuals who work with electricity,
servicing or installing electrical circuits, shoes must have been tested and approved
for EH (Electrical Hazard) under ASTM F2413-11.

4.3.3.1 Gloves to Provide Abrasion Protection are provided in Battery areas. They must be
worn in accordance with the JSA, Job Aides and Work Instructions available in work cell.

4.3.3.2 Electrical Safety Gloves to Provide Electrical Protection are provided in Battery
areas. They must be worn in accordance with the JSA, Job Aides and Work Instructions
available in the work cell.

4.3.3.3 Gloves for laceration protection. Any time an associate is using a cutting device, the
associate must wear the appropriate cut resistant gloves.

4.3.3.4 Gloves for thermal events will be provided through various vendors.

4.3.3.5 Gloves for chemical resistance will be provided, if necessary.

4.3.3.6 Electrical gloves for various levels of electrical exposure will be provided.

4.3.4 Hearing Protection: Hearing protection devices are required while conducting work in all
the Machining areas. The most recent Industrial Hygiene survey showed the area to have an
eight-hour rating of below 90 but above 85 decibels.

4.3.5 Hearing protection may be required for all battery areas according to hearing
conservation program. Testing is yet to be conducted.

4.3.6 Personnel with hearing aids will be provided with proper accommodation for ear
protection.

4.3.7 Clearly visible warning signs will be posted at entrances to and/or the periphery of areas
where noise levels equal or exceed 85 dBA. Areas where the use of hearing protection is
required are also noted on the warning sign.

4.4 Provision of Battery Personal Protective Equipment (B.P.P.E)

4.4.1 BorgWarner will provide non-prescription safety glasses for Visitors, Vendors, Temporary
associates and Contractors who need to enter the Battery areas for related business.

4.4.2 Provision of Personal Protective Equipment for BorgWarner Associates.

4.4.2.1 Non-Prescription Safety Glasses: BorgWarner will provide non-prescription safety


glasses to all associates working at BorgWarner.

4.4.2.2 Prescription Safety Glasses: BorgWarner will pay for prescription safety glasses one
time per calendar year per associate. The frames are predetermined and may be
upgraded at the cost of the associate. See Human Resources for details.

4.4.2.3 Safety Shoes: BorgWarner allots each associate an annual stipend that can be used
towards the purchase of quality safety shoe that meet the ASTM standards as described
in this policy.

4.4.2.3.1 The stipend is $125/year for associates working in Battery areas and $125
every year BorgWarner maintenance associates. Please see HR for a full list of direct
bill vendors. If you are buying shoes from a “non-direct bill” vendor, you will be
required to bring your receipt AND your shoes to HR to verify they meet the PPE
standards.

4.4.2.3.2 Effective November 16. 2023 all new purchases of safety shoes will have to
meet both the compression standards as well as the slip/oil resistant standards and
Battery area requirements.
