Veterans honored for service by church

By Sean Dalton

The Nov. 13 service at St. Andrews United Church of Christ went far beyond honoring the idea of Americas war veterans. During the service the flags of every United States military branch were proudly brought down the church aisles as the official songs of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines were played, during which congregation members and guest vets stood up when their flag was brought before the churchs alter by members of the Dexter color guard. I feel honored, said Eric Affholter, who stood in representation of his own investment of sweat and blood in preserving the

freedom and security of all Americans. Affholter, who joined the Air Force in 2003 attended the service with his father, Earl, who viewed the service from the perspective of a Vietnam war draftee. He was stationed in Germany in 1964 after being drafted in 1961. It made me appreciate the little things like heat and having a place to wash my cloths, Earl said, as his son looked on nodding his head in agreement. I agree with what Kennedy said, Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country, Earl concluded. Rev. Larry Van Slambrook led the service with remarks about the nations intentions when

going to war. As a nation our cause has not been to go forth on foreign fields for the sake of conquering to add to our borders, Slambrook said. Ours has been a vision to help other people in this global community experience the same kind of freedoms that we do here. And so we do say thanks in this moment. Slambrook read the names of several veterans thanking them for their contribution of the armed forces, and shared that his son, David, is currently in active duty with the army. The names read included the Affholters, Jack Ham (deceased), Bill Hargove (active duty), Bill Lowery, Scott Mosher (active duty), Stewart Arft (deceased), Jeffrey Bergey, Travis

Bourdon (active duty, Garrett Buchanan (active duty), Chad Clark, Glen Geer, Art Klumpp, James Klumpp, Larry Mannor, Bill Marshall (deceased), Joe Owsley, Tom Phebus, Arden Shafer, Daniel and David Van Slambrook, Michael Smith, Bill Sumner, Joe Weber, Benjamin Wheeler (active duty), James Wilson (active duty), Nick Wisely (active duty) Ray Even (deceased), Kevin Wheeler, Jim Gagalis, Leon Hall, Andy Marshall (active duty) and Don Staulter. American Legion Post 557 Chaplain Paul Tomshany spoke in honor and remembrance of those soldiers who are still missing in action or prisoners of war. Those who have served

and those currently serving in the armed services of the United States are forever mindful of the fact that the sweetness of enduring peace has always been tainted by the bitterness of personal sacrifice, Tomshany said to the congregation. We are compelled to never forget that while we enjoy our daily pleasures there are others who have endured and may still be enduring the agonies of pain, of deprivation, of imprisonment. The congregation gave a moment of silence for the 80,000 POWMIA, calling everyones attention to a table arrangement of items symbolizing the ongoing plight of those whose sacrifice was taken to the

Dexter Village Council voted unanimously to support QED Environmental Systems Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption request last night. The exemption request is for approximately $104,498 in new personal property and approximately $758,043 in real property improvements to their Broad Street facility over a period of 10 years. QED is a leading manufacturer of environmental monitoring systems such as groundwater sampling and remediation pumping as well as landfill products and air strippers. The company is planning facility

improvements that will, according to QED President David Mioduszewski, bring more than 50 jobs to Dexter. The value of the abatement is approximately $3,000 in village taxes. Mioduszewski was present to speak at the meeting and thanked Council members for their consideration of the request and added their new location is homier than their prior location. The Council also discussed the status of its pursuit of cityhood and the next necessary steps that must be taken. The Director of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs recently decided the Villages petition for cityhood was legally suf-

ficient and instructed the Boundary Commission to set a public hearing which will, according to the Commission, most likely be Jan. 17 or 24. Village President Shawn Keough said the next step is to attend the Boundary Commission meeting this Thursday to present the proposed boundary changes, which draw in a small portion of the Gordon Hall property and completely exclude the Mill Creek Sporting Goods property from the potential citys boundaries. This is like a baseball game, Keough said of the pursuit of cityhood. We have to take it one pitch,
